How to Get to Osaka Castle, Japan: Shuttle Bus
Osaka Amazing Pass & Castle Tower Entrance Fee
Osaka Castle, one of Osaka's most iconic tourist attractions.
It's also famous as a cherry blossom spot, so I
visited during the peak bloom season in early April.
The cherry blossoms were absolutely stunning, and I considered walking to fully enjoy them,
but to save my energy,
I took the shuttle bus on the way up.
On the way back down to the subway station, I still had plenty of time to enjoy the cherry blossoms
and take photos.
I definitely recommend taking the shuttle bus on your ascent!
So, let me tell you more about how to get to Osaka Castle, the shuttle bus, entrance fees,
and whether the Osaka Amazing Pass covers it!
How to Get to Osaka Castle
There are five subway stations that can take you to Osaka Castle:
Temmabashi, Tanimachiyonchome, Morinomiya, Osakajokoen,
and Osakabusinesspark Station.
If you're planning to walk all the way to Osaka Castle's main tower,
any of these stations will work,
but expect a 25-minute walk from any of them.
While the initial part of the walk is mostly flat,
from the middle onwards, it's mostly uphill.
I highly recommend taking the shuttle bus, especially on hot days.
There's not much shade, so it gets incredibly hot.
(Of course, the shuttle bus can't go up the steepest parts of the hill).
Shuttle Bus
The shuttle bus stop is located about a 5-minute walk inside the park,
after exiting Morinomiya Station through Exit 3-B.
Look for the Starbucks Morinomiya branch behind the Osaka Castle Park fountain.
You'll spot it easily.
The shuttle bus stop is right in front of it.
The fare is 400 yen one-way for adults.
A 1-day pass costs 1,000 yen.
Just go to where the staff member is and make your payment.
They'll give you a receipt, which serves as your ticket.
Previously, only cash was accepted, but when I visited,
they also accepted cards!
The bus doesn't depart immediately after you buy your ticket.
Instead, they wait for enough people to gather before departing.
So, I waited for about 10 minutes in the waiting area.
There are no windows, so it's completely open-air.
You'll feel all the wind as you ride! Haha.
On colder days, they do put down plastic covers,
but it might actually feel colder on the shuttle bus in winter...
I was worried I wouldn't get a proper view of the cherry blossoms from the bus,
but actually, it was even better to enjoy them comfortably from inside!
Though, when passersby stare,
it does feel a bit like being a monkey in a zoo, haha!
Midway, the bus stops at a cafe in front of Osakajokoen Station
to pick up more passengers before continuing its journey.
It doesn't drop you off directly in front of Osaka Castle,
but rather at a bridge midway.
From there, you'll need to walk for about another 5 minutes.
Excluding the time spent waiting in the lounge,
the actual bus ride was about 15 minutes.
Osaka Castle's Main Tower (Tenshukaku)
Osaka Castle was originally built by
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who instigated the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea).
Today, it stands in its restored form from 1931.
Seeing it up close, it's amazing to think how such a detailed and
magnificent castle could have been built in ancient times.
As a Korean, it also brings about some mixed emotions.
Osaka Castle Interior Admission Fees
If you want to enter the Osaka Castle interior museum and observation deck,
you'll need to buy a ticket. On-site purchase is possible, but
if you don't book in advance, you might have to wait at least 30 minutes,
so I highly recommend booking online beforehand!
Also, if you've purchased the Osaka Amazing Pass,
you can enter for free without any waiting.
Tenshukaku (Main Tower) Interior Admission Hours: 9:00 AM ~ 5:00 PM
Honestly, I don't really recommend going inside Osaka Castle.
Even though it's called an observation deck, the views are mostly obstructed by netting,
so it's not particularly scenic.
There's also a museum inside, but honestly, I questioned the value of seeing a museum related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Most visitors also feel that for the rather expensive admission fee,
it's often unsatisfactory.
Boat Ride, Osaka Amazing Pass
The Gozabune boat ride within Osaka Castle Park
can be ridden for free if you use the Osaka Amazing Pass!

so if you're planning a trip focused on sightseeing attractions,
instead of buying individual tickets,
I highly recommend utilizing the Osaka Amazing Pass!

Photo Zones
Truthfully, every corner of Osaka Castle is a photo zone!
Especially when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom,
every spot you turn to offers a beautiful shot.
It's also famous as a maple leaf viewing spot, so I recommend visiting in spring around April or
during the autumn foliage season in December!
No matter which of the five subway stations you get off at, such as Temmabashi or Morinomiya, it takes about 25 minutes on foot to reach the Main Tower. Since there are many hills and no shade along the way, taking the shuttle bus is recommended.
You can board the shuttle bus in front of the Starbucks Morinomiya store near Exit 3-B of Morinomiya Station. The fare for adults is 400 yen for a one-way ticket and 1,000 yen for a 1-day pass. Both cash and credit cards are accepted.
The admission hours for the Main Tower are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you have the Osaka Amazing Pass, you can enter for free without waiting in line. For general visitors, it is recommended to book online, as purchasing tickets on-site usually requires a wait of at least 30 minutes.
You can ride the Gozabune boat in Osaka Castle Park for free using the Osaka Amazing Pass. If you plan to visit multiple tourist attractions, it is more efficient to use the Amazing Pass rather than purchasing individual tickets.
