During my trip to Andong, I wanted to find a truly special place to stay near the historic Hahoe Folk Village. That search led me to Okyeon Jeongsa, a breathtaking traditional estate designated as South Korean National Folklore Cultural Heritage No. 88 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
While you do have to take a slightly longer route around the river to reach the main entrance of Hahoe Village, the rare opportunity to sleep inside an actual living piece of history made it worth every mile. Plus, having scenic, peaceful walking trails like Buyongdae Cliff, Hwacheon Seowon, and Gyeomam Jeongsa right at your doorstep is an incredible bonus.

I’ve stayed in a few hanoks before, but because this is an officially protected cultural heritage site, the sense of anticipation as I walked through the main gate was on another level.
Passing through the inner gate (Neaanmun) leads you directly into the residential quarters. The wooden veranda you see on the right is where we enjoyed a freshly prepared traditional breakfast the next morning.
Right ahead is Sesimjae, the cozy room where we would be spending the night.
And this building is Wonrakjae. Okyeon Jeongsa offers two main types of accommodation:
Sesimjae (Double Room): Features rooms situated on either side of a central wooden porch (daecheongmaru). It offers a beautifully traditional, communal atmosphere.
Wonrakjae (Family/4-Person Room): A private, detached villa layout that includes an ensuite bathroom, making it the perfect option for families or groups.

Back to Sesimjae. This is my absolute favorite angle to photograph when staying at a hanok.
Our room in Sesimjae featured a classic layout where individual rooms are separated by the central open-air wooden hall, which acts as a shared living area.
The Daecheongmaru Structure: The high, exposed-beam ceilings are designed to maximize airflow, letting you experience the architectural genius of traditional Korean design.
Inside, we were greeted by neatly folded, pristine traditional bedding (yo) and a charming vanity mirror framed by classic hanok woodwork. Because the doors open on all sides, you can enjoy a cool, gentle breeze even on warmer days.
For modern comfort, the room is equipped with air conditioning, ensuring a cool and refreshing night's sleep during the summer months.
Just behind the room, a gorgeous crepe myrtle tree was in full bloom, adding a splash of vibrant pink that makes for the ultimate summer hanok photo op.
Bathrooms and Modern Amenities
Given the historic preservation of the estate, the bathrooms for Sesimjae are not inside the rooms. Instead, they are located just past the wooden deck near the main gate. While it requires a brief walk outside, each room is assigned its own private bathroom, which is thoroughly modernized, sparkling clean, and incredibly well-maintained.
Even though there wasn't a window, the ventilation system worked perfectly, keeping the space dry, fresh, and comfortable.
Exploring the Neighborhood: Buyongdae Cliff, Gyeomam Jeongsa, and Hwacheon Seowon
After unpacking, I grabbed my camera and headed out for a late afternoon stroll around the grounds.
Buyongdae Cliff (5-minute walk): The trail is gentle enough that you could easily walk it in sandals. Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with a breathtaking, panoramic view of the entire Hahoe Folk Village cradled by the Nakdong River.
Gyeomam Jeongsa: Following the trail signs from Buyongdae Cliff leads you to this wonderfully quiet, secluded study hall nestled in the woods.
Hwacheon Seowon: Located just steps from Okyeon Jeongsa, this historic Confucian academy is the perfect spot for a peaceful morning walk.
As night fell, we sat out on the wooden veranda, enjoying the cool country breeze and sipping on Gyeongju Beopju rice makgeolli, a delicious local specialty. It was the perfect way to unwind.
Lulled by the gentle white noise of rustling leaves and crickets, a deep, peaceful sleep settled over the historic estate.
A Traditional Salted Mackerel Breakfast & Tea at Jisanru Pavilion
🐟 Traditional Andong Salted Mackerel (Gan-godeungeo) Breakfast
Breakfast here is a work of art. The spread features an array of fresh, delicate side dishes (banchan) centered around Andong’s famous salted grilled mackerel. It was incredibly flavorful, hearty, and the ultimate way to fuel up for a day of exploring.
🍵 Quiet Moments at Jisanru Pavilion in Hwacheon Seowon
After breakfast, we wandered over to the adjacent Hwacheon Seowon. Inside the academy grounds lies 'Jisanru', a beautiful elevated pavilion where visitors are welcome to take off their shoes and climb up.
Arriving early meant we had the entire pavilion to ourselves. Sitting cross-legged on the wooden floor, sipping a refreshing glass of iced omija (five-flavor berry) tea while looking out at the mountains, was pure bliss.

Spending a night at Okyeon Jeongsa in Andong was more than just a place to sleep; it was an immersive journey into Korea's rich cultural history.

What We Loved: The exceptional local salted mackerel breakfast, the seamless proximity to Buyongdae Cliff and Hwacheon Seowon, and the stunning summer scenery.
Sesimjae is a double room divided by a main wooden floor (daecheongmaru), and its restroom is located outside the room near the main gate. On the other hand, Wollakjae is a detached house accommodating up to four people, featuring a private restroom inside, making it ideal for family travelers.
A traditional Korean table d'hôte (Hanjeongsik) featuring grilled salted mackerel, a famous local specialty of Andong, is served for breakfast. It comes with a variety of neatly prepared side dishes, offering a hearty meal.
It takes about 5 minutes on foot from Ogyeonjeongsa to Buyongdae. The slope is gentle enough to climb in slippers, making it easy to go up and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Hahoe Village.
Jisanru Pavilion, located inside Hwacheon Seowon right in front of Ogyeonjeongsa, is a pavilion you can climb up after taking off your shoes. If you visit early in the morning, you can relax and enjoy a cup of Omija (schisandra berry) tea in a tranquil atmosphere.
