Our Visit to Dosanseowon

We visited during an early October holiday weekend, so we set off at dawn to beat the crowds.
Leaving Busan (부산) around 6:30 AM, we arrived at Dosanseowon by 10:00 AM. We made a quick stop at a rest area for a simple breakfast, so the actual driving time was about 3 hours.

The walk from the entrance to the main courtyard of Dosanseowon took about 7 minutes. The path is gently sloped, making it an easy and pleasant walk, even for kids. I probably wouldn't attempt it in the summer heat, as I'm quite sensitive to it!
Inside Dosanseowon, the layout feels like it gently ascends a hill.

Right in front of Dosanseowon, there are several ancient trees. Make sure to grab a leaflet at the entrance; it offers a brief introduction to the different areas. For a more in-depth experience, I highly recommend asking one of the cultural commentators for a guided tour. I overheard parts of a tour, and they provided incredibly informative and detailed explanations.

An hour was sufficient to explore the entire site. However, my child tends to move quickly, so I plan to return when they are older and more interested in history, to truly appreciate the commentator's insights. The parking lot is spacious and free. We parked right in front of the entrance, managing to snag a spot thanks to some early birds leaving.

There's a snack bar near the entrance of Dosanseowon that seemed to offer simple meals. Beyond that, there aren't any restaurants directly in front of the site. We left around 11:00 AM, intending to find lunch elsewhere. We instinctively headed to the Korea Cultural Theme Park (한국문화테마파크) and ended up having instant ramen there!
Honestly, I was planning to go to the market for Andong Jjimdak (안동찜닭), but my spontaneous decision led us to ramen instead. Oh well!
Family-Friendly Activities

Dosanseowon isn't packed with typical 'fun' activities. Its true charm lies in the power of the space itself, offering a unique opportunity to share a centuries-old environment with modern visitors. My child, perhaps not expecting typical entertainment, naturally enjoyed the stroll, occasionally resting on the wooden verandas while waiting for me.

However, there are a few great photo opportunities! A dedicated photo zone is set up where you can capture Sisa-dan (시사단) across the river. Don't forget to take a picture of your child with Sisa-dan in the background.

I walked around with my child saying things like, 'This building is over a hundred years old!' and 'Do you recognize any of the Chinese characters on these plaques?' For my child, who is just starting to learn Chinese characters, it was an excellent place to reinforce their learning.

National Heritage Administration (국가유산청) Stamp
You'll find a stamp station at the tourist information center, located near the snack bars at the Dosanseowon entrance. You can use it to stamp your National Heritage Administration stamp book (which you can apply for and receive by mail), or if you don't have one, loose sheets are available next to the stamp for your convenience!
Nearby Attractions

1. Yi Yuksa Literature Museum (이육사 문학관)
Located just a 6-minute drive away.
Not only the Yi Yuksa Literature Museum, but also the tomb of Togye Yi Hwang (퇴계 이황) is nearby, so it might be a nice idea to pay your respects with a brief visit.
2. Korea Cultural Theme Park (한국문화테마파크) and World Confucianism Culture Museum (세계유교문화박물관)
These are about a 10-minute drive away. It's great to take a leisurely stroll around with your child. If you have time, catching a performance and trying some hands-on activities would be even better, but even just walking around is enjoyable. The World Confucianism Culture Museum is across from the Korea Cultural Theme Park, so you can easily visit both at once.
3. Gyeongbuk Forest Science Museum (경북산림과학박물관)
This museum offers interactive experiences, making it a great place to visit with children.
4. Korea Academy of Korean Studies (한국국학진흥원) and Confucian Culture Museum (유교문화박물관)
I found it a bit challenging to explain Confucianism to my child, so next time we're in Andong, I think visiting the Confucian Culture Museum together would be a valuable experience.

While there are many attractions in the Dosanseowon area, Andong's most famous sites are undoubtedly Hahoe Folk Village (하회마을) and Bongjeongsa Temple (봉정사). To truly appreciate everything, it's best to stay 2-3 days rather than just a day trip. You'll find yourself wishing you had more time!

After Andong, we actually headed to Gimcheon (김천), though we really wanted to visit Mungyeong (문경) and many other nearby places. If you, like us, love exploring different areas, I highly recommend the Gyeongbuk Tour Pass.
Final Thoughts

Our visit was so sudden that we couldn't secure accommodation, forcing us to rush through just a few places. We left Andong with a longing to return and explore more. Next time, I hope to stay overnight within Hahoe Folk Village (하회마을) to leisurely discover the village itself and Buyongdae Cliff (부용대).
That day, Hahoe Folk Village was incredibly crowded... it was the day of the traditional 줄불놀이 (줄불놀이) fireplay event.
We'll definitely be back to Andong!
