Exploring Andong Korean Culture Theme Park

After a visit to Dosan Seowon (도산서원) on October 3rd, we were originally headed towards Hahoe Folk Village (하회마을). However, my husband mentioned seeing a sign for Andong Korean Culture Theme Park (한국문화테마파크) on our way to Dosan Seowon, so we decided to change our plans. We had been debating whether to visit the Yi Yuksa Literature Museum (이육사 문학관), but since we'd already changed direction, we embraced the spontaneity! We arrived with absolutely no prior information about the place.
The drive from Dosan Seowon took about 10 minutes. I expected to arrive quickly, but it was nestled deeper than I anticipated. I remember thinking, "What could possibly be out here?" only to be pleasantly surprised upon arrival.
The parking lot was surprisingly empty, especially considering it was approaching lunchtime on a weekend. I was a bit taken aback, wondering if the place was even popular. The buildings, however, all looked brand new and well-maintained.

With minimal expectations, we decided to spend just an hour exploring. But it turned out to be far more than we imagined! The park was full of fantastic photo zones, and they offered time-slot based experiences. There were activities like archery, various performances, and hanbok (한복) costume experiences. They even had an arcade and a free play area with building blocks and other games for kids. You could easily spend hours just wandering through the buildings and trying out all the different activities.

When you purchase your admission ticket, keep in mind that you can also buy bundled packages for the experiences. We entered Andong Korean Culture Theme Park using the Gyeongbuk Tour Pass (경북투어패스), which granted us free admission. We would have only needed to pay for additional experiences, but our child was so happy freely exploring the spacious grounds without our intervention that we skipped the extra activities. Even just exploring the main area took a considerable amount of time; we arrived around 11:00 AM and left around 1:30 PM, spending about 2.5 hours there. It still felt like we didn't have enough time, so plan accordingly!

Family-Friendly Fun

Andong Korean Culture Theme Park is a complex cultural site that recreates the appearance of a fortress village from the Joseon Dynasty (조선시대). It was so much fun just exploring the village and peeking into the various experience zones. The weather was beautiful, making it perfect for taking photos.
My child absolutely loved running around on the well-maintained paths. It was a great opportunity for them to stretch out after a long drive. They walked and ran with such joy, though it meant I, as their mother, had quite the workout keeping up!

After entering, we walked along the fortress wall and descended towards the marketplace, which was quite a distance. We only realized after walking for a while that there's a charming free shuttle bus available to the left, past the ticket office. It seemed to run every 20-30 minutes, and I highly recommend using it to comfortably explore the entire park.

Nearby Attractions
For other nearby places to visit, I've attached a link to my Dosan Seowon (도산서원) post.
Additionally, while there's an attraction called 'Nolpak' (놀팍) that costs extra, I thought my child would get too excited about it, so we didn't show it to them. Haha!

Right across the street is the World Confucian Cultural Museum (세계유교문화박물관), which I think would be great to visit together. Honestly, I only found out about it after we returned home, which is a real shame. As Korea is deeply rooted in Confucian culture, I regret not having visited this museum. I feel it would have made explaining the importance of etiquette in our society much easier for my child.
Final Thoughts

My initial thought, "Why isn't such a great place utilized or promoted more?" turned out to be unfounded. On our way out, we saw numerous tour groups arriving, suggesting we had simply chosen a less crowded time.
I highly recommend allocating plenty of time for your visit to Andong Korean Culture Theme Park. Also, the restaurants weren't fully operational yet, but there was a self-service convenience store offering frozen foods.
Items like fried rice, instant ramyeon (라면), ice cream, drinks, and bottled water were available. They only had Jin Ramyeon (진라면) mild and spicy flavors. My child found it a bit spicy but enjoyed it happily with the fried rice. The food options were a bit limited, which was a minor disappointment.
If you bring plenty of water for everyone and a simple packed lunch, it seems you could easily picnic here all day. There were so many areas to explore that I was sad we couldn't see everything.

If I get the chance again, I'd love to visit the World Confucian Cultural Museum (세계유교문화박물관) across the street and the Yi Yuksa Literature Museum (이육사문학관).
This was my second visit to Andong, and getting here from Busan (부산) isn't easy, which has always made it feel quite distant. However, now that my child is starting to learn history, I imagine we'll visit more often. In fact, frequent visits could make learning about the Joseon Dynasty (조선시대) much easier.
