Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro Honmachi Review 2026: Osaka's Hidden Gem
Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro in Honmachi, Osaka: a hidden gem for wait-free, authentic Japanese BBQ. Enjoy premium beef tongue and diverse cuts before exploring Shinsaibashi.
On the second day of our Osaka adventure, the skies opened up with rain right from the morning.
Our original plan was to explore various sights and do a lot of walking, but with the steady downpour, we decided to tweak our itinerary a bit.
But hey, we weren't about to let a little rain stop us from enjoying some amazing food! For lunch, we headed to Honmachi Station for yakiniku. We got there around 4:30 PM, and already, we noticed a decent number of office workers starting to trickle in.

While planning our Osaka trip, I'd researched several yakiniku spots around the Namba area. However, many of the popular ones had reviews mentioning notoriously long wait times.
Waiting an hour or two just to eat isn't really my style when I'm traveling, so I sought out a slightly less crowded option. That's when I discovered Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro. (And no, it's not a compromise on taste; it actually has quite a few positive reviews from international visitors on Google!)
I only found this place a few days before our trip, so it wasn't one of our pre-planned must-try restaurants. But, as it turned out, we left feeling incredibly satisfied with our meal.
No Waiting Worries: We Went for an Early Opening
If you've ever researched famous yakiniku restaurants in Japan, you know that long queues are practically part of the experience.
To avoid any potential wait, we decided to arrive right at Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro's opening time.

To our surprise, and contrary to our worries, we were actually the very first customers! Haha!
It was still early, and the restaurant is located a little away from the bustling Namba city center, which meant the place was wonderfully quiet. Honestly, I preferred it this way.
Instead of rushing through our meal in a crowded spot, we could leisurely grill our meat in a calm atmosphere. The staff, perhaps because it wasn't busy, were incredibly friendly and attentive.
When we visited, it seemed like there was a chef and one other staff member at Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro, and both of them had such a vibrant, cheerful energy.
Once they realized we were from the US, they kept trying out Korean phrases they knew, which was a fun surprise!
Later, when my friend thanked them in Japanese for the delicious meal, the staff member replied in Korean, which genuinely surprised us!
On our way out, they even gave us pineapple candies. It's these small, thoughtful gestures that often stick with you the most during a trip.

Ordering at Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro in Honmachi was super easy using the QR code on our table. Even if you're not fluent in Japanese, you can take your time browsing the menu, which was a huge convenience. I recall that adding them as a LINE friend was part of the ordering process.
So, even now that our trip is over, I still occasionally get promotional messages from Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro, haha!
Of course, I could just delete them from my LINE friends, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Aside from that minor detail, we had no issues with the ordering process.
The restroom was located on the second floor and, if I recall correctly, was also very clean.
I also glanced at the drink menu, and they had a surprisingly diverse selection of highballs and sours, including some interesting fruit-infused options like tomato sours.
We ordered a mix, including a tomato sour and a plum sour. They were perfect for sipping while grilling our meat – leaning more towards a refreshing drink than a strong alcoholic beverage.
From Beef Tongue to Tenderloin: The Set Menu Experience

We opted for a set menu that allowed us to sample various cuts, from beef tongue to tenderloin.
Instead of just one type of meat, it offered smaller portions of different cuts, which I think is a fantastic way to start if it's your first time visiting.
To recap what we enjoyed, the set included beef tongue kalbi (rib), regular beef tongue, tenderloin, and several other delicious cuts.

And when we ordered the meat, they brought out a generous amount of thinly shredded cabbage! It was sliced so finely that it absorbed the sauce beautifully and was light enough to enjoy continuously with the meat without feeling heavy.

True to a Honmachi yakiniku spot, we grilled the meat ourselves right at our table on a personal brazier.
My friend is much better at grilling than I am, so I mostly just waited for the meat to be perfectly cooked and then enjoyed it, haha!
It really pays to go with someone who knows their way around a grill!

Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro offered several delightful accompaniments to go with the grilled meat.
A dab of wasabi provided a clean, refreshing bite, but what really stood out to me was the butter. That was a unique and pleasant surprise!
Dipping the meat lightly in butter really deepened its rich flavor.

Reordering Our Favorites
After devouring our set menu, we decided to order a bit more of the cuts we particularly loved.
It wasn't that the meat wasn't good – quite the opposite, actually!
We simply weren't planning on ending our culinary journey for the day at just one spot.
We had plans for a second and third stop, intending to try yakitori skewers and other local delicacies, so we didn't want to completely fill up on yakiniku alone.
That's why we only added a little more of our favorite cuts, eating just enough to feel satisfied without being overly full.
When traveling, I think this approach is often the best. If you eat too much at one restaurant, you miss out on trying other amazing dishes!
Checking my notes from that day, our meal for two at Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro – including beef tongue kalbi, regular beef tongue, tenderloin, and drinks – came out to approximately ~$37.
Please note that this was based on my visit, so I recommend checking their current menu and prices before you go.

A Pleasant Walk to Shinsaibashi Afterwards
One of the reasons we chose Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro was its convenient location.
While it's not right in the heart of Namba, after finishing your meal, it's an easy stroll down towards Shinsaibashi. On a nice day, it would be perfect for a leisurely walk and some window shopping.
Our original plan was exactly that: enjoy our yakiniku, then walk down towards Shinsaibashi, doing some shopping and sightseeing along the way.
The area around it has a continuous stretch of shops, making it a great spot to integrate into your post-meal itinerary.
However, that day, the rain was just relentless! So, we ended up just taking a few quick photos nearby and then hopped on the subway straight to Namba.
If the weather had been better, the route from Honmachi, enjoying yakiniku, and then taking a relaxed stroll down to Shinsaibashi would have been absolutely perfect.
Especially if you're planning to dine in Honmachi and then head towards Shinsaibashi, this yakiniku spot is definitely worth considering for your itinerary.
If you prefer to enjoy your grilled meat in a relaxed atmosphere without the long queues of super-famous restaurants, then Yakiniku Okini Ryotaro is a place you should certainly check out.
