We arrived at the Sutera Marina, which is easily accessible through the beautiful grounds of The Pacific Sutera Hotel. Boarding starts promptly at 5:00 PM, and as we walked down the dock, we caught our first glimpse of the vessel that would host our evening adventure.

To board, you will need two items: your paper ticket and your boarding wristband. Make sure to keep both handy!

This was a particularly special trip because we brought our 24-month-old toddler along. It was his very first time on a boat, and he was absolutely thrilled! It has been three months since our trip, and he still talks about it. He loves pointing out the window and saying, "Grandma, Mommy, boat goes beep beep! Sun went splash in the water! Now it's dark!" It's amazing how deeply these travel memories stick with little ones.

Once you step inside the air-conditioned cabin, you'll find the buffet line beautifully set up. Each party is assigned a specific table, so there's no need to rush to find a seat.

At the front of the cabin, a live performance stage is set up with microphones and instruments. You can already feel the lively, energetic atmosphere building up before the ship even leaves the dock!

As soon as you are seated, the staff serves welcome drinks, roasted peanuts, and fresh local satay right to your table.

I have to admit, I was incredibly nervous before boarding because I suffer from severe motion sickness. I'm the kind of person who gets dizzy even on a calm river cruise! However, the waters around the harbor were surprisingly calm, and the cruise ship was large and stable enough that I didn't feel any discomfort at all. Meanwhile, our little guy was completely obsessed with the peanuts!

Seeing both my mother and my baby having such a wonderful time made me feel so incredibly proud of planning this family outing.

And we're off! The ship gently glides away from the marina as the evening journey begins.

We headed out to the open-air deck to take in the breeze, snap some photos, and enjoy the scenery. Keep in mind that it can get quite warm and humid out on the deck—around 85°F—so you'll definitely appreciate the air-conditioned cabin when you head back inside!

Just as we were starting to feel the tropical heat, the live band kicked off their performance inside. They played an amazing mix of international pop hits, classic favorites, and even some popular Korean songs that had everyone singing along.

They also sell cold beer on board, and they accept credit cards! I highly recommend using a travel-optimized debit or credit card for hassle-free payments while traveling around Kota Kinabalu.

Our 24-month-old absolutely loved the music and started dancing along to the beat!

A Quick Tip for Parents: The buffet selection is geared more toward adults, so options for very young toddlers are somewhat limited. We brought along some packaged seaweed sheets (gim), which worked wonders. He happily ate a mix of white rice, seaweed, bread, fries, peanuts, and some snacks we brought from our hotel room.

After finishing dinner and enjoying the music, we noticed the sky starting to shift colors. It was time to head back out to the deck!

As the sun dipped lower, the entire horizon ignited into deep shades of crimson, pink, and orange. Kota Kinabalu is famous for having one of the world's top three most beautiful sunsets, and standing on the deck, it was easy to see why.

It was a truly breathtaking moment. Everyone on board let out a collective gasp of awe as the sun touched the water. We held our baby close and explained to him how the sun was "going to sleep in the ocean." It's a simple memory, but one that we will cherish forever.

Even after the sun fully disappears, don't rush back inside! The afterglow of a Bornean sunset is often even more vibrant than the sunset itself, painting the twilight sky in incredible pastel hues.

My mother pointed out a fascinating, arrow-shaped cloud pointing directly down toward the horizon. Everyone on the deck started pointing and taking photos under this unique formation. It felt like a little magical touch to end our cruise.
