Naju Gomtang Hayanjip Review 2026: Beef Soup & Senior Discount
Discover Naju Gomtang Hayanjip, a 116-year-old culinary institution. Dive into its rich Suyuk Gomtang, snag takeout tips, and learn about senior discounts for your 2026 trip.
On a recent trip to Naju with my son, we experienced a true culinary gem:
Hayanjip, a century-old restaurant famous for its Naju Gomtang.

No Naju itinerary is complete without a visit to the Gomtang Alley in front of Geumseonggwan.
I'm excited to share my firsthand experience with their incredible Suyuk Gomtang during peak lunch hours,
plus insider tips for taking out two-serving portions,
and details on the senior citizen discount we found posted in the restaurant.

First Impressions: Exterior & Waiting
Nestled in the heart of Naju Gomtang Alley, Hayanjip is a 'Baeknyeon-gage' (100-Year Store)
that has been serving up its iconic beef soup since 1910, now run by the 4th generation.
That's an impressive 116 years of tradition!
We arrived around 11:00 AM, and the place was already packed.
By the time we left, closer to lunchtime, the line had grown significantly.
However, don't let the queue deter you! Given the nature of this hearty soup,
the turnover is quite fast, so we didn't have to wait long to be seated.

Stepping inside, you're immediately greeted by the mesmerizing sight of steam rising from massive iron cauldrons,
and an open kitchen where chefs expertly 'toryeom' (pour broth over rice) each bowl.
Menu & Pricing
As a specialized restaurant, the menu is wonderfully simple.

Category | Item | Price |
Meals | Gomtang | ~$10 |
Suyuk Gomtang | ~$11 | |
Side Dishes | Suyuk (Boiled Beef Slices) | ~$30 |
Alcohol | Soju, Beer | ~$4 |
Makgeolli (Rice Wine) | ~$4 | |
Beverages | Soft Drinks | ~$1 |
My Honest Review: Suyuk Gomtang
We ordered two bowls of Suyuk Gomtang, which comes with a more generous portion of meat than the regular Gomtang.

The basic side dishes were neatly arranged: aged kimchi, cubed radish kimchi (kkakdugi),
chili peppers and garlic, doenjang (fermented bean paste), chojang (vinegar gochujang), and salt.
Clear, Rich Broth
Unlike the milky white broth of other bone soups, this is a traditional Naju-style broth – clear and transparent.
It boasts a deep, clean, and incredibly savory umami flavor.
Generous Portions of Premium Korean Beef
Each bowl is packed with tender lean cuts of beef, as well as chewy textures from head meat and ox tongue – all high-quality Korean beef (Hanwoo).
Kimchi to Enhance the Flavor

The aged kimchi, with its distinct Jeolla-do region depth of flavor, and the crunchy kkakdugi
are perfect for enjoying with the beef, cutting through any richness and allowing you to savor every last bite.
Essential Tips for Takeout Orders
For my family back home, I also placed a takeout order.
The minimum order for takeout is two servings; individual 1-serving portions are not available for pre-packaged orders.
However, I heard you can get a single serving if you bring your own pot.
We opted for two sets of two servings, totaling four servings for takeout.
The packaged broth, meat, and green onion garnish are all generously portioned,
so you can easily recreate the restaurant's authentic taste by simply heating it up in a pot at home.
Senior Discount Benefits for Your Parents
While dining, I noticed a sign on the wall detailing a special senior discount.

When choosing a Naju Gomtang dish at Hayanjip, you basically decide between the regular Gomtang or the Suyuk Gomtang.
