When I was planning my solo trip to Nagoya,
Shirakawa-go and Takayama were at the very top of my must-visit list.
However, navigating there alone by switching between trains and buses felt a bit complicated and inefficient.
But then I thought, what if I join a bus tour and I'm the only solo traveler among couples and families?
I was a little worried.

In fact, I had an experience in Taiwan a while back where I went on a suburban bus tour alone, and out of 40 people, I was the only solo traveler! ㅠㅠ
I remembered feeling awkward all day, so this time, I made sure to choose a Nagoya bus tour that guaranteed departure even with just one person.

1. Why You Should Explore Nagoya's Charming Nearby Towns

If seeing just Nagoya city isn't enough, consider dedicating a day to exploring its surrounding areas.
Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a beautiful village known for its unique gassho-zukuri farmhouses.
It's especially breathtaking in winter...!

Takayama has a similar vibe to Kyoto, with plenty of souvenir shops and delicious food, making it a must-visit.
Gujo Hachiman is an up-and-coming small town, not yet swarmed by tourists, and offers incredible views of the river and bridges.
The itinerary I followed was:
Depart Nagoya → Shirakawa-go → Takayama → Gujo Hachiman → Return to Nagoya.

I also looked into public transportation options for solo travelers, but it seemed complicated – having to pay for tickets in Japanese Yen cash on the spot, making transfers, and so on. ㅠㅠ
The bus tour, however, included round-trip transportation and a Korean-speaking guide, so I didn't have to worry about figuring out my own way.

What I loved most was that I didn't just see Shirakawa-go; I got to visit three small towns, each with its own distinct atmosphere, all in one day!

2. The Perfect Bus Tour for Solo Adventurers

Out of the many tours available, the biggest reason I chose Tour Story was that it had a minimum departure of just one person!
This meant I didn't have to worry about my booking being canceled due to insufficient participants,
and indeed, when I went, there were quite a few solo male and female travelers on the tour.

I had read reviews mentioning departures with only about five people, so I secretly hoped for a small-group tour. However, the bus was completely full when I went... hahaha.
Nagoya travel itself is super popular these days, so I guess it's really just the luck of the draw!
I checked the prices again based on current rates,
and it seems Klook has the best deal!

3. My Solo Bus Tour Experience

We met at Mirai Tower at 8 AM.
Our guide was incredibly friendly and sociable,
so even though I went alone, it didn't feel awkward at all!
There were not only Korean solo travelers but also
international tourists on the tour!

Shirakawa-go, our first stop, was a place I'd seen many times in photos.
But actually being there, seeing the Gassho-zukuri village
nestled between the mountains – the scenery itself was just incredibly beautiful.
There was also plenty of free time, so I could explore the observation deck and the village
at my own pace.
In fact, being alone meant I could linger longer at the spots
where I really wanted to take photos.

In Takayama, I explored the old streets,
searching for delicious snacks and souvenir shops.
What I particularly loved was that even though it was a group tour, I wasn't just trailing behind
the guide. After listening to the explanations,
I was free to wander off on my own – a huge plus for me!

And the decisive reason I recommend this tour
is Gujo Hachiman.
Most tours only go to Shirakawa-go and Takayama, but this one includes a stop at Gujo Hachiman.
As the 'City of Water,' Gujo Hachiman had such a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere,
completely different from the previous two regions.
I felt a great sense of satisfaction getting to see one more amazing place before the tour ended, haha!

What I liked most of all was that I wasn't the only solo traveler!
Compared to a previous tour in Taiwan where I was the only solo person among couples and families,
this time there were quite a few solo adventurers,
so I felt much less pressure from the moment I stepped onto the bus.
A little gem from the tour!
