When you think of Nagoya, delicious Nagoya meshi (local cuisine)
or its image as an industrial city probably come to mind.
So, many of you might be thinking, 'Is there really anything beyond the food?'
But if you just cast your gaze a little beyond Nagoya to the nearby regions,
you'll discover so many truly wonderful places.
Today, I'll introduce you to the Shirakawa-go and Hida Takayama Full-Day Bus Tour,
a tour that lets you comfortably visit two unique nearby regions in just one day!
From Nagoya city, there are about three or four types of Shirakawa-go and Hida Takayama tours available.
Among these, I chose the Klook Choice Tour.
While there were several reasons for booking this tour,
the most significant was its high rating.
✅It boasted a high rating of 4.6 stars and numerous reviews.
I've taken tours in many different regions abroad,
and I've rarely been disappointed when a tour has a high star rating and a large number of reviews!
(And I was genuinely satisfied with this one too.)
This tour offers ample time to soak in the atmosphere of each region, with approximately two and a half hours in Hida Takayama and
two hours in Shirakawa-go.

Next, I'll share my experience, going through the entire itinerary, from the tour meeting point
for each segment of the journey.
Tour Meeting Point
The tour meeting point is on the 1st floor of the Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER, located in the heart of Nagoya city.
Your guide will be waiting there to check your name and then direct you to the bus.
From there, you simply board the bus at the designated spot
and take your assigned seat.
The bus offered generous legroom between the seats,
and the plush seats made for a very comfortable journey.
Hiruga Kogen Rest Stop
On the way to Hida Takayama,
we made a brief stop at the Hiruga Kogen Rest Stop.
Although we primarily stopped for a quick restroom break,
you can also enjoy some delicious ice cream and take souvenir photos here.
First, I tried the ice cream that our guide raved about.
You purchase a ticket from a vending machine for 400 yen,
which isn't too expensive for a rest stop, I thought.
It might look like an ordinary soft-serve cone,
but the milk flavor was rich, and it melted smoothly in my mouth,
making it truly delicious!
Our guide also mentioned that it's customary to take a photo of your ice cream with the signpost shown in the picture.
With a sprinkle of snow visible on the mountains in the background,
The wooden signpost definitely had that charming,
non-urban vibe to it.
Hida Takayama
Our first stop on the tour was Hida Takayama,
a city historically known for its many artisans and merchants.
It's said that there were particularly many woodworking artisans here,
which might explain why, even for a sizable area, the downtown district is filled with
numerous wooden buildings, all sharing a similar charming aesthetic.
After snapping some photos, our first order of business was to
explore the Miyagawa Morning Market.
While I didn't find its scale overwhelmingly large,
I heard it's actually one of Japan's more substantial
and renowned morning markets.
It wasn't so much a place for serious shopping, but rather
perfect for soaking in the authentic 'this is what a Japanese
morning market feels like' atmosphere.
Hida Takayama is brimming with quaint and picturesque spots
around every corner of the city.
After exploring the market, you can simply wander leisurely through the charming alleys,
snapping photos and savoring local delicacies.
What truly stood out was the incredible array of street food!
This region is renowned for its 'Hida-gyu' beef, a special cattle breed,
so you'll find an abundance of restaurants specializing in beef dishes.
While it was a tad on the pricey side, the beef sushi literally melted in my mouth – it was absolutely divine!
I highly recommend treating yourself to it at least once during your visit.
For those who appreciate 'Nihonshu' (Japanese sake),
Hida Takayama is nothing short of paradise!
You'll find a plethora of local breweries,
offering opportunities for casual tastings and sake shopping.
With so many breweries to choose from, you can't go wrong, but
I personally visited Hirase Brewery.
For only 1,000 yen, you can enjoy a fantastic 30-minute tasting session featuring over 20 different types of
Nihonshu – it was an incredibly satisfying experience!
Shirakawa-go
Once we wrapped up our itinerary in Hida Takayama,
we embarked on roughly an hour-long journey to Shirakawa-go.
I had eagerly anticipated Shirakawa-go, drawn by its mystical ambiance and
distinctive architectural style, but unfortunately,
the heavens opened up and it started raining quite heavily as we arrived.
Despite the gloomy weather and pouring rain,
the scenery in Shirakawa-go was nothing short of breathtaking.
During my visit in April, the village landscape was adorned with lush green trees and
delicate cherry blossoms, while distant mountain peaks still held traces of snow.
It truly felt like witnessing all four seasons unfold simultaneously.
Shirakawa-go is renowned for its panoramic observatory, but
due to the heavy downpour, I only managed to see the iconic Three Houses.
It was fascinating how their roofs rose sharply in a triangular shape,
and seeing the three houses together created a picturesque scene,
almost mimicking the very shape of the mountains themselves.
With the rain coming down so heavily, rather than exploring further,
we decided to take refuge by popping into a nearby shop,
enjoying a simple dessert, and just relaxing for a bit.
Though it was quite a downpour outside,
there was something incredibly special about watching the rain fall over Shirakawa-go from the cozy indoors,
a warm cup of coffee in hand. The atmosphere was simply magical.
Today, I wanted to share with you the Hida Takayama and Shirakawa-go tour –
an experience I wholeheartedly recommend adding to your Nagoya itinerary.
It was truly wonderful to immerse myself in unique landscapes and an atmosphere that felt distinctly different from the bustle of central Nagoya or other typical Japanese cities,
plus, discovering new experiences in each area made the trip incredibly satisfying!
