1. Why Nagoya?
📍 Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, Japan 〒501-5627

In winter, Sapporo's flight prices and accommodation can jump 2-3 times compared to the off-season.
Off-peak | Peak Season | |
Sapporo Airfare | Average ~$222 | Average ~$592-666 |
Nagoya Airfare | Average ~$148 range | Average ~$222-296 |
What's more, with so many tourists, it can be hard to truly soak in the sights and capture those perfect photos.
Instead, I opted for Shirakawa-go, a breathtaking snow-covered village that costs 1/2 to 1/3 less than Sapporo and is far less crowded.
In hindsight, it was an absolutely brilliant choice! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
2. My Bus Tour Experience

To reach this UNESCO World Heritage village, famed for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, a bus tour proved to be far more efficient and budget-friendly than trying to navigate it independently.

It's no exaggeration to say that visiting this beautiful spot is one of the main reasons many travelers flock to Nagoya.
Given its immense popularity, if you're planning a winter visit, it's highly recommended to book your spot in advance before it sells out!

Q. There are many tours available, so why did you choose this particular company? |
A. Most tour operators head to Takayama first before coming here, which means Shirakawa-go often gets quite crowded in the afternoon. The BUS TOUR I chose, however, goes directly to Shirakawa-go first, allowing us to explore and take photos leisurely before the crowds arrive. |

Our first stop was the Harukano Plateau Rest Area.
Perched at an altitude of approximately 870 meters, this plateau rest area is said to be the highest along Japan's expressways.
And let me tell you, the panoramic views were absolutely breathtaking!
And everyone indulged in the delicious milk ice cream, a special treat only found in the highlands!
We snapped some photos with the majestic snow-capped mountains in the distance,
before hopping back on the bus and making our way to Shirakawa-go.

Roughly two hours later, we disembarked at the parking lot,
and after crossing a bridge, there it was – the village I had longed to see!
We had arrived at what felt like a real-life 'Santa Village'!

Upon arrival, I made a beeline straight for the observation deck!
The path to the observatory was dotted with human-sized snowmen like in the picture above,
or charming characters, making it seem like such a wonderful spot to visit with kids!

Q. When's the best time to visit to witness this breathtaking scenery? |
A. While December is when it truly starts to get chilly, if you're dreaming of seeing the village completely covered in snow like in my photos, I highly recommend visiting in January or February! When I visited on February 3, 2026, this year, the entire village was a magnificent white wonderland, with not a single patch of melted snow in sight. In Nagoya, December temperatures are comparable to early winter, but from January, the mercury truly plummets, with lows around 0.8°C and highs around 9°C. This makes January and February the absolute perfect time to witness the gassho-zukuri village in all its snowy glory. Because of this, January and February are peak season for Nagoya travel. If you're planning a tour, it's highly recommended to book in advance, as tours sell out incredibly fast during this magical time! |

Before reaching the observation deck, I discovered a gem – a place that had won an award at the prestigious Japan Pudding Awards!
It was the Pudding House, famous for its exquisite, silky-smooth puddings!
And let me tell you, it was hands down the best Japanese pudding shop I've ever experienced!

I devoured it so deliciously, I still think about it to this day!

That day, when I ascended to the observation deck, there weren't many people around, relatively speaking.
So I figured I'd buy the pudding after I came back down.
However, as time went on, more and more people started to gather,
and I ended up waiting for quite a long time!
So, if you're planning your visit, when you arrive,
make sure to buy from Pudding House first, THEN head up to the observation deck!
I highly recommend you do this!
Q. What's the price range for the puddings, and which flavors were your favorite? |
A. The price varied slightly depending on the flavor, but on average, they were around ~$3 each. They offer a wonderful variety of flavors, including strawberry, chocolate, matcha, and original. Each one was perfectly balanced – not overly sweet, and utterly delicious! They were so good, I honestly regretted not buying more to take home. So, please don't just try one! Grab a few different flavors to savor them all. (Seriously, the best pudding I've ever had in Japan!) |

As you soak in the stunning scenery, it's about a 15 to 20-minute walk,
and once you've walked up, you'll find the entire village laid out before your eyes
from the incredible panoramic observation deck!

Nagoya definitely felt less crowded than Sapporo,
allowing us to leisurely snap photos with friends,

It was exactly the quintessential winter trip I had always dreamed of,
and I got to savor every single moment!
When I was looking into bus tours, I specifically compared how much time each tour allowed us here,
compared to other tour companies.
The tour I chose actually gave us an extra 30 minutes!
Thanks to that extra time, we could explore without feeling rushed,
and truly enjoy taking countless photos with my friends!

Afterwards, we headed to Takayama, a charming town filled with quaint old buildings and traditional breweries.
There, we enjoyed a delightful lunch, visited a cozy cafe,
toured a local brewery, and then, as our final stop, we explored the charming nearby town of
Gujo Hachiman, making for an incredibly fulfilling and unforgettable trip!

After getting off at our final destination, we chose from the list our guide gave us
and stopped by a Yakiniku restaurant for dinner.
We wrapped up our itinerary feeling incredibly satisfied,
and it’s become one of those trips I still fondly remember to this day.
3. Don't Forget These Essentials
The path up to the observatory was unexpectedly slippery,
so **you absolutely must bring crampons!**
Thinking "I'm young, I'll be fine,"
you might end up taking over an hour to climb.
I read reviews from people who had already gone,
so I made sure to bring mine. But those who didn't
kept slipping and couldn't even make it properly to the observatory,
some even falling down.
So, even if it's just to prevent slipping accidents,
please make sure to bring crampons.
Travel Essentials Checklist | |
Waterproof Spray | Since it's a snowy area, your shoes can quickly absorb moisture, so it's a good idea to spray them with waterproof spray before your trip. |
Crampons | It's essential to bring them for climbing up to the observatory. When I visited, I saw several people fall, so for safety reasons alone, I strongly recommend bringing them. |
Gloves & Winter Gear | Since temperatures drop sharply, keeping your body warm is crucial. If you bring items like hot packs, scarves, ear muffs, and hand warmers, you can maintain your body temperature throughout your trip. |
4. Final Thoughts

After visiting both Sapporo and Nagoya and comparing them, here's my conclusion:
✔ If you want a cost-effective trip
✔ If you dislike crowds and want to explore at a relaxed pace
✔ If you want to visit a town completely covered in white snow
I'm confident Nagoya will be much better for you.
The prices, sights, restaurants, and cafes—
everything earned a five-star rating, making it a truly satisfying trip.
So if you're deliberating due to cost and crowd levels,
give Nagoya a try this winter!
