BEST 5 Places to Visit & Itineraries for Your Nagoya Trip, Japan
A boring city, you say? No way, it's a blast!
When I first thought about a trip to Nagoya, Japan,
I wondered, 'What is there even to see?'
But once I started looking, from Nagoya's Ghibli Park
to Shirakawa-go, it's perfect to combine them,
and I realized the travel itineraries are surprisingly diverse!

Especially if you're planning a 2-night, 3-day or 3-night, 4-day Nagoya trip,
instead of just focusing on Nagoya city itself,
add a day for Ghibli Park,
and another day for a Shirakawa-go & Takayama day trip,
and your itinerary will be so much richer (๑•᎑•๑)♡

Here are the must-visit spots in your Japan Nagoya travel itinerary:
I'll break down the BEST 5 Places to Visit in Nagoya :)
BEST | Places to Visit in Nagoya | Highlights |
1 | Ghibli Park | A must-do for any Nagoya trip |
2 | Nagoya Castle | Iconic city landmark |
3 | AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden | Shopping, dining |
4 | Shirakawa-go Tour | Perfect for a day trip from Nagoya |
5 | Oasis 21 | Night views, Sakae exploration |
0 | 1 | Nagoya Ghibli Park |
When I was planning my trip to Nagoya, Japan,
the very first place I added to my itinerary was
Nagoya Ghibli Park.
(I even booked my flights after successfully getting tickets...)

📍 Ghibli Park
Ibaragabasama, Nagakute, Aichi 〒480-1342, Japan
Places to Visit in Nagoya: Nagoya Ghibli Park | |
Location | Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture, within Aichi Expo Memorial Park |
Operating Hours (Weekdays) | 10:00~17:00 |
Operating Hours (Weekends/Holidays) | 09:00~17:00 |
Closed | Every Tuesday |
If Tuesday is a public holiday | Closed on the next weekday |
Other Closures | Year-end/New Year holidays, facility inspection days, etc. |
Admission Method | Advance reservation required |
Main Areas | Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, Hill of Youth, Dondoko Forest, Mononoke Village, Valley of Witches |
Recommended Viewing Time | Approx. 4-5 hours for core areas, full day recommended for complete experience |
Ticket Reservation | Advance purchase required for your visit date |
Ghibli's Grand Warehouse | Select a designated entry time when purchasing tickets |
Transportation | From Nagoya Station, take the subway, transfer to Linimo, and get off at Aichi Expo Memorial Park Station. |
This is different from the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo;
it's a large-scale Ghibli theme park built within Aichi Expo Memorial Park.
It's comprised of five areas:
Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, Hill of Youth,
Dondoko Forest, Mononoke Village, and Valley of Witches.

From My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle,
to Kiki's Delivery Service, The Cat Returns, Princess Mononoke, and more,
you can actually see the spaces you've only seen in Ghibli films come to life.
That's why I immediately added it to my Nagoya itinerary!

However, Ghibli Park
doesn't operate on a walk-in, buy-your-ticket-on-the-spot basis,
advance reservations are a must!

Especially for Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, entry times are designated,
and tickets for opening hours are fiercely competitive! +_+
If you've booked your flights to Nagoya,
it's a good idea to secure your Ghibli Park tickets first.
There are separate sites for international travelers and Japanese residents,
but I found purchasing through the link below to be the most convenient.
Basically, Ghibli Park tickets
open 2 months prior to your visit month,
on the 10th of each month at 2 PM JST.
Visit Month | Ticket Open Date |
September Visit | July 10th, 2 PM |
October Visit | August 10th, 2 PM |
November Visit | September 10th, 2 PM |
December Visit | October 10th, 2 PM |
January Visit | November 10th, 2 PM |
✔️ Book Your Ghibli Park Tickets
The Osanpo Premium Pass, which grants access to all 5 areas,
can be quite difficult to purchase unless you're there right at opening!
However, the Standard Pass, which covers 3 areas (Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, Valley of Witches, and Mononoke Village),
is generally easier to get.

But since Dondoko Forest is truly just like it is in the movie,
I highly recommend going for the Premium Pass if possible!
It's a bit far from the city center,
but there's so much to see inside,
that even dedicating an entire day
to it on your Nagoya itinerary wouldn't be a waste.

If you end up going last minute,
there are bus tours that include tickets, though they come at a higher price.
(But... the price difference is significant, so it's best to book in advance!)
0 | 2 | Nagoya Castle |

📍 Nagoya Castle
1-1 Honmaru, Naka Ward, Nagoya, Aichi 460-0031 Japan
In Nagoya city,
if you had to pick one travel spot that truly feels Japanese,
it would definitely be Nagoya Castle.

Honmaru Palace Entry | until 16:00 |
Closed Days | December 29th ~ January 1st |

Currently inaccessible inside

Honmaru Goten Palace, Castle Walls, Gardens, Kinshachi
Nearest Station

Distance from Station
Approx. 5-minute walk from Exit 7
Recommended Time
Approx. 1-2 hours
It's a landmark representing Nagoya, and it's easy to get to from Sakae,
making it a great half-day itinerary combined with Oasis 21.
Currently, the interior of Nagoya Castle's main tower (Tenshukaku)
is not accessible, but

you can explore the restored Honmaru Goten Palace, the castle walls,
and the gardens.
The adult admission fee is 500 yen (~$3),
making it an affordable destination to visit!

0 | 3 | Nagoya AEON Mall Noritake Garden |
📍 AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden
3-chōme-1-17 Noritakeshinmachi, Nishi Ward, Nagoya, Aichi 451-0051 Japan
When you're constantly visiting tourist spots,
don't you sometimes feel like doing some shopping in between?

That's when the AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden
is the perfect place to drop in.
It's quite convenient for travelers to find, being about a 10-minute bus ride or a 15-minute walk from Nagoya Station.
If you love Japanese supermarket shopping,
time will mysteriously fly by here, haha!

With everything from a shopping mall to a food court, restaurants, 100-yen shops,
and a large supermarket all in one place,
it's super convenient for buying snacks, Japanese food,
or anything you might need during your trip.
One of the things Noritake Garden is famous for
is its Tsutaya and Starbucks.

It's a great spot for photos too, so
make sure to check it out!
0 | 4 | Nagoya Shirakawago Tour |

If there's one place you'd regret missing on a Nagoya trip,
it has to be Shirakawago.
Although it's a bit of a distance from Nagoya,
it's a beautiful place in both summer and winter.
Shirakawago is a place where you can see the traditional Japanese
Gassho-zukuri village landscape,
and you can visit it as a day trip from Nagoya.

While you can take an express bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center near Nagoya Station,
you have to coordinate round-trip travel times and the price is higher,
so I opted for the Takayama Shirakawago bus tour instead.
Book the Nagoya Shirakawago Tour I took:
Reservation: https://3ha.in/r/688311

When you go up to the Shirakawago Observation Deck,
you can see the panoramic view of the village,
with its collection of triangular-shaped traditional houses that we've all seen in so many photos.
I felt like I had stepped into a fairytale🩵
The atmosphere was completely different from Nagoya city center,
so if you're traveling for 2 nights/3 days, 3 nights/4 days or even longer,
it's definitely worth a day trip.
Shirakawa-go exceeded all my expectations and I absolutely loved it 🩵
0 | 5 | Oasis 21 |
📍 Oasis 21
1-chōme-11-1 Higashisakura, Higashi Ward, Nagoya, Aichi 461-0005 일본
Our last stop was at
Oasis 21, located near Nagoya's Sakae Station.

Since I stayed in Sakae during my Nagoya trip,
I saw this place several times a day.
This building, which looks a bit like a spaceship, is right here!
It's directly connected to Sakae Subway Station,
so it's a place you'll likely visit at least once during your Nagoya city travels.
It's beautiful during the day,
but personally, I recommend visiting in the
evening when it's lit up.

Right next to it is the Chubu Electric Power
MIRAI TOWER,
which is great for enjoying panoramic views of Nagoya!

Planning a 2-night, 3-day trip to Nagoya, Japan?
Day 1
Nagoya Castle → Sakae → Oasis 21
Day 2
Ghibli Park
Day 3
AEON Mall → Nagoya Station Shopping →
This itinerary works great.
If you have 3 nights and 4 days, it's wonderful to add a
Shirakawa-go day tour to this!

If you only focus on the city attractions,
Nagoya might feel a little quiet,
but if you include Ghibli Park and Shirakawa-go,
you'll discover a destination full of diverse charms, offering both the
Ghibli magic and traditional Japanese villages!
What's more, Gero Onsen is also nearby,
making it a great option for a ryokan stay if you're traveling with your parents.
