Embarking on a Beijing adventure means a visit to the magnificent Great Wall is absolutely essential.
And among its many incredible sections,
Mutianyu is often the top choice for a convenient day tour.
Typically, your tour itinerary will have you exploring Mutianyu first,
before you're ready for a well-deserved lunch.
Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to a fantastic restaurant near the Great Wall (Mutianyu) – a true culinary gem for your Beijing trip!
It's called Xianlaoman!

Xianlaoman is conveniently located right after you exit the Mutianyu Great Wall cable car,
on your way to the parking lot.
There's also a Luckin Coffee right next door,
making it a perfect spot to enjoy coffee after your meal!
We popped in during a late lunch, which meant we had the place pretty much to ourselves – wonderfully peaceful!
It seems to be a popular spot for Korean tour groups, which is a great sign!
Good to know: the second floor has seating perfect for larger groups,
so even if you're traveling with family, you can comfortably sit together.
Tableware is set at every seat.

We ordered two main dishes and two types of dumplings.
The prices were wonderfully reasonable, with main dishes typically around ~$6-~$7 and dumplings in the ~$3-~$4 range.
Every one of the four dishes we ordered came with incredibly generous portions!
In fact, Di San Xian and Kung Pao Chicken
were so substantial, they could easily feed two people each.
Let's break down the flavors of each dish we savored!
The moment our food arrived, we couldn't resist ordering a bottle of refreshing Tsingtao Beer.
It was served perfectly chilled, and on a hot Beijing day,
that first sip was absolutely delightful and incredibly refreshing.
📍Di San Xian (地三鲜)
Our first dish, Di San Xian, is one of my all-time favorite Chinese dishes, so naturally, I had to order it!
It's a vibrant stir-fry featuring three delightful ingredients: eggplant, bell peppers, and potatoes. The sauce is wonderfully balanced, not too strong,
making it a fantastic match for many palates, including Korean tastes.
The eggplant, in particular, was a revelation – perfectly crispy on the outside and incredibly tender within,
making it one of those dishes you just can't stop reaching for.
I've sampled Di San Xian at various restaurants before,
and I can confidently say this version was definitely above average!
It pairs wonderfully with rice, so
try ordering it with a bowl of plain rice or fried rice!
📍Kung Pao Chicken 宫保鸡丁
Next up is another rice thief, Kung Pao Chicken!
This stir-fried dish features chicken, peanuts, and green onions.
The sauce is deliciously sweet, making it a hit even with kids.
While eating Kung Pao Chicken, I realized that the combination of chicken and peanuts is surprisingly good.
And when you add green onions to the mix,
it truly feels like enjoying a simple, home-cooked Chinese meal.
📍Laoman Jiaozi 老满饺子
The third dish we ordered, recommended by the staff,
was Laoman Jiaozi, named after the restaurant itself.
At first glance, it might resemble Japanese gyoza,
but the dumpling skin was slightly thicker than the Japanese style.
The jiaozi were generously filled, making them perfectly fine to eat.
However, they were quite similar to standard dumplings you can find anywhere,
so it wasn't a dish I'd rush to order again.
📍Pumpkin Egg Dumplings
Next up, we have the Pumpkin Egg Dumplings,
which our guide recommended!
Although the dumpling skin was a little thick,
the pumpkin and egg filling inside was wonderfully soft.
And I loved that it wasn't overly seasoned – it had a really pleasant, mild flavor.
Dipping them lightly in chili oil made them even more delicious!
And surprisingly, the combination of dumplings and beer was quite good too.
Packed with vegetables and not overly stimulating,
this was a dish my parents truly enjoyed.
Xian Laoman, a fantastic restaurant near Beijing's Mutianyu Great Wall,
is where you can savor delicious Chinese home-style dishes
at a great value.
For a party of four, the total came out to be around ~$24.
The affordable price was a huge plus, allowing us to order a variety of dishes to try.
Since it was recommended by our guide,
you might think it's just another package tour restaurant.
However, seeing our guide also enjoy a meal here made me realize,
'Ah, this is a place even the locals love!'
Given that there isn't a lot of restaurant information available around this area,
if you're looking for a reliably delicious dining spot,
I highly recommend giving Xian Laoman a try!

Xianlaoman (Mutianyu Branch) operates from 8 AM to 6 PM. It is located on the path from the Mutianyu Great Wall cable car exit to the parking lot, right next to Ruixing Coffee.
Yes, each set of tableware costs 2 Chinese Yuan (approximately ~$0). There are pictorial menus on the tables, and you can choose your food by referring to the menu photos, then scan a QR code to order.
For 4 people, we ordered Di San Xian (40 Chinese Yuan), Pumpkin Egg Dumplings (35 Chinese Yuan), Jiaozi (24 Chinese Yuan), Steamed Rice (5 Chinese Yuan), and Gong Bao Ji Ding (45 Chinese Yuan). The total came out to approximately ~$24. Main dishes were in the 40-50 Chinese Yuan range, and dumplings were in the 20-30 Chinese Yuan range.
Di San Xian is a stir-fried dish with eggplant, bell peppers, and potatoes. The sauce wasn't too strong and suited Korean palates well, and the eggplant was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The Pumpkin Egg Dumplings had a thick wrapper, but the pumpkin and egg filling inside was soft and not overly seasoned, so the adults enjoyed them very much.
