Montbell Hiroshima Review 2026: Tax-Free Shopping & Stock Guide

These days, Montbell is hands down one of the absolute best things to buy when you're visiting Japan.

It's the perfect place to find everything from practical gifts for your parents and adorable items for friends with kids,

to trendy gear for yourself!

Even items that carry a heavy premium price tag back home

can be snatched up at Japan's regular retail price—plus, you get tax-free shopping on top of that!

I've checked out Montbell stores in Fukuoka and Osaka before,

but I couldn't really shop properly because Fukuoka didn't offer tax-free, and Osaka was almost completely out of stock.

So, I walked out empty-handed back then.

But during this trip to the Hiroshima Montbell store,

I finally struck gold and walked out with a massive haul!

Here is my complete guide, from the current stock situation to how to claim your tax refund!

The store is located right at a major intersection near Hondori.

This entire massive building, spanning the first and second floors, is dedicated entirely to Montbell!

The first floor mainly features men's and unisex clothing,

along with hats, bags, and outdoor accessories.

Head up to the second floor, and you'll find women's apparel and the kids' section.

Quick tip: You have to pay for your 1st-floor and 2nd-floor items at their respective cash registers,

but you can combine the receipts at the end to claim your tax-free refund!

I've detailed exactly how the tax-free process works down below!

First up, the Hiroshima exclusive Montbell T-shirts!

To be honest, the colors and designs of these regional tees are usually a bit hit-or-miss for me,

so despite the "limited edition" hype,

I ended up passing on them this time too.

They also had a solid selection of outdoor wallets.

Although the viral coin purse that's trending all over social media wasn't in stock,

having just come from the completely cleared-out Osaka Montbell,

I was incredibly grateful to see this much variety!

I ended up picking up a rain cap,

and the prices were very reasonable, ranging from around ¥2,700 to the ¥4,000s.

Montbell hats are lightweight, offer great UV protection, and are super breathable,

making them absolutely perfect for hot summer days :)

And yes, my boyfriend already stole it from me... but you didn't hear that from me! 🤫

They even had backpacks in stock—something I didn't even catch a glimpse of in Osaka!

You can find the entire backpack section on the first floor.

There was plenty of other apparel on display too.

After browsing the first floor and checking out, I headed up to the second floor.

The first thing that caught my eye was the kids' corner.

The items were so affordable and incredibly cute, so I couldn't resist picking up an outfit as a gift.

Since I'm not super familiar with kids' sizing, I asked a staff member for help,

and they were absolutely lovely and incredibly helpful!

The famous "Jennie sunglasses" that were popular last year seemed to be out of stock this year.

Honestly, unless you're blessed with a perfect oval face and a tiny head,

they are notoriously hard to pull off. I tried them on last year and...

I remember looking in the mirror, getting shocked, and taking it right off 😂

This camping zone totally made me think of my outdoorsy friends who love camping.

They had everything from tents to all kinds of gear,

but since I'm a complete camping novice, I just browsed around.

They also had these adorable Montbell bear keyrings!

They were priced at 1,300 yen (around $8).

There was also a section dedicated to hiking essentials.

From bear bells to all sorts of trekking gear,

they had a really wide variety.

All the crossbody bags that I couldn't find on the 1st floor

were gathered here on the 2nd floor.

There were so many more bags, hats, and accessories, but I was so busy shopping

and trying to take photos that I missed quite a few shots ㅠㅠ

Tax-Free

At Montbell Hiroshima, you can use the PIE VAT app

to claim your tax refund.

I highly recommend downloading the app before you start shopping!

Once you combine all your receipts from both the 1st and 2nd floors

and ask the staff for a tax refund,

they will write a claim code on this slip of paper for you.

Simply enter the claim code from the paper into the PIE VAT app,

and show it to the staff member again.

⚠️ You must bring your passport!

Because you’ll need to take a photo of your purchase receipt

and the landing permission sticker inside your passport to submit them.

Once you’ve completed those steps,

just enter the card number where you want to receive your refund, and you're all set!

Note that the steps above must be completed while you are still inside the store,

but you can enter your card number after returning home.

The refund took about 5 days to process for me.
