1. Why You Shouldn't Book a Hong Kong Stay Based on Price Alone
When searching for places to stay in Hong Kong,
you’ll surprisingly spot accommodations in the ~$6 to ~$19 range.
Honestly, it’s tempting just looking at the price.
Hong Kong's cost of living is notoriously high, after all.
And since some of these are located right in Tsim Sha Tsui,
some people happily book them thinking they scored a great deal.

But please, don't!
If you look closely, those dirt-cheap places are all located in or right next to Chungking Mansions.
I strongly advise against staying in this area.
As I wrote in detail in my previous post,
Chungking Mansions is so unhygienic and unsafe that I wouldn't even recommend visiting it for sightseeing during the day.
Even Hong Kong locals avoid it.
I've summarized the details about Chungking Mansions in the post below, so check it out if you're curious!
Hong Kong Accommodations You Should NEVER Stay At 👇
Why you should absolutely avoid Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong even if it's in the ~$19 range
Trying to save a few bucks on your stay
can end up ruining your trip due to poor hygiene, noise, and safety issues,
leaving you swearing you'll never return to Hong Kong.
I used to think, "A hotel is just a place to sleep anyway,"
but Hong Kong completely changed my perspective on that.
A small room is perfectly fine,
but hygiene and safety are two things you should absolutely never compromise on.
2. The #1 Hong Kong Hotel Under ~$32: Mini Hotel
📍 Mini Hotel Causeway Bay
8 Sun Wui Rd, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
The biggest reason I recommend Mini Hotel Causeway Bay
among all the budget stays in Hong Kong
is its cleanliness and unbeatable location for the price.
Among the options you can book for under ~$32,
it's incredibly rare to find a place this well-maintained.

Plus, Causeway Bay is
an incredibly convenient base for exploring Hong Kong.
It's perfect for shopping, packed with amazing restaurants, and makes catching the tram or MTR super easy.
So, how is the room quality?
Check it out in the video!

True to its name, it is very "mini."
It's seriously tiny.
To maximize the space efficiently, though,
they've designed a luggage storage space right under the bed
and completely stripped away unnecessary amenities like microwaves or mini-fridges.

It's a highly practical, minimalist layout
perfectly matching its no-frills, stripped-down price.
But if you check in keeping this in mind,
it actually feels surprisingly decent.

The bedding was clean, and the bathroom didn't feel cramped at all,
making it perfect for solo travelers, and totally manageable for up to two people.
When searching for recommended Hong Kong stays under ~$64,
you'll find many places where reality looks nothing like the photos.
But for Mini Hotel, once you know these facts...
If you lower your expectations a bit, you definitely won't feel disappointed!

Looking at the ceiling, you can get a pretty good idea of the room size, right?
The key here is that you shouldn't expect a luxury hotel at all.
This isn't a spacious, breezy spot for a "staycation."
It's a highly budget-friendly, well-located stay in Hong Kong.

If you want to save on accommodation during your Hong Kong trip
and spend that cash on amazing food, shopping, Disneyland, and the Peak Tram instead,
then this is an absolutely fantastic choice!

The lobby has a really chic, modern design,
and they offer easy self-check-in and check-out.

3. Must-Know Drawbacks of Mini Hotel Causeway Bay
Mini Hotel Causeway Bay definitely has some clear downsides.
If you don't know these beforehand, you might end up disappointed.

Truly "Mini" Room Size
By far, the biggest drawback of budget stays in Hong Kong
is the size of the room.
If you lay out two large suitcases,
it will pretty much block the entire floor space.
It's perfectly fine for solo travelers,
but if you're traveling as a duo, you'll need to stay organized with your luggage.
If you're the type who likes to keep your suitcase open 24/7,
you might find it a bit uncomfortable.
Only Disposable Towels Provided

The second drawback is the towels.
They provide thin, disposable towels here.
But honestly, they absorb water surprisingly well,
so it didn't really bother me!
If you're picky about towels, I'd recommend packing your own!
No Amenities / Facilities

The third downside is the lack of facilities.
When you think of a hotel, you usually expect basics like a gym, pool, or breakfast buffet.
You might think these amenities are standard.
But Mini Hotel cuts out all those extra frills completely.
There is literally nothing but your room!
However, on my Hong Kong trips, I tend to walk everywhere anyway
and exploring the city on foot means I'm out all day.
Plus, opting out of hotel breakfast is actually better so you can hit up a local Cha Chaan Teng!
So for me, this was actually a plus!

I've summarized these very clear downsides,
but if you're still on the fence about booking this place,
let me help you make a final decision!
Recommended For | Not Recommended For |
Solo travelers | Those wanting a spacious room |
Those who only use hotels for sleeping | Those looking for a "staycation" experience |
Travelers focused on shopping & foodie spots | Those with multiple large suitcases |
Those looking to save on Hong Kong hotel costs | Those who prioritize premium hotel services |
Personally, I think it's a great choice if you're on a tight budget for your Hong Kong trip.
✅ However, if you're traveling with parents for a family trip,
✅ traveling with young kids,
✅ or celebrating a special anniversary...
I'd highly recommend booking a slightly larger hotel!

4. Insider Tips for Booking Budget Hong Kong Stays at the Lowest Rates
Hotel rates in Hong Kong fluctuate a ton.
A rate you saw yesterday might jump up significantly today.
Especially on Fridays, Saturdays, or public holidays,
during major conventions, or the year-end season,
it becomes incredibly hard to find any decent stays under ~$64.
If your travel dates are locked in
and you see Mini Hotel priced under ~$64, it's definitely in your favor to book it right away!
During the off-season, you can snag a room for under ~$32,
but as peak season approaches,
you'll often see the price of the exact same room jump by ~$13 to ~$19 overnight.

Trip.com | ~$26 |
MyRealTrip | ~$26 |
Agoda | ~$20 |
While MyRealTrip and Trip.com are around ~$26 per night, Agoda is offering it in the ~$19 range!
I compared these based on the exact same dates and room type.
MyRealTrip:

Trip.com:

Agoda is overwhelmingly cheaper this time around,
so before all the rooms sell out...
I highly recommend booking as soon as possible!
Mini Hotel doesn't have a huge number of rooms,
so they tend to sell out incredibly fast.

Usually, if you're on the fence about the price,
it's best to secure your spot with a free cancellation option...
But here’s the catch: no matter which booking site you use,
Mini Hotel rarely offers free cancellation.
Since it's incredibly budget-friendly and rooms fly off the shelves,
if your travel plans aren't 100% confirmed yet,
I recommend bookmarking this post
