While Mindeungsan is often associated with its shimmering silver grass in autumn, the mountain's unique geological charm truly shines during the summer months of June and July. The entire mountain dons a lush, deep green, reminiscent of the whimsical Teletubby Hills or the refreshing Swiss Alps. The Dolline, a sunken limestone sinkhole in the middle of the landscape, looks like a scene straight out of a movie, making it a prime spot for 'insta-worthy' pictures.

Jeongseon Mindeungsan Mountain Shortest Route: Turtle Shelter
📍 Location, Parking at Turtle Shelter, and the Shortest Route
The difficulty and time required for hiking Mindeungsan Mountain vary greatly depending on your starting point. Beginning from Jeungsan Elementary School, for instance, can take 3-4 hours round trip. However, our family opted for the shortest route by driving to the Turtle Shelter (Balgu-deok).
Address: 296 Eoksaekkot-gil, Nam-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province
Driving & Parking Tip: The forest road leading up to the Turtle Shelter is quite steep, and passing oncoming cars can be tricky in some sections. Novice drivers might find it challenging. Unlike the peak silver grass season in autumn, visitor numbers are relatively lower in June and July, so you can usually find parking along the shoulder or in small clearings near the shelter.
However, during the busy silver grass season, even driving to the Turtle Shelter can be subject to traffic jams.

⏰ Actual Time to Dolline and the Summit
Once you start walking from the Turtle Shelter along the forest path, you'll surprisingly quickly reach an open ridge with expansive views.

To the Dolline
Starting from the Turtle Shelter, you can comfortably reach the beautiful crater-like Dolline in about 30 minutes, even with children and a dog walking at a relaxed pace.

Recommended Summer Destinations in Jeongseon
From the Turtle Shelter to the Dolline, even if your child or dog needs breaks, you'll still arrive within 40 minutes. Since it's the shortest route, even if they're a little whiny, a bit of encouragement will get you there quickly, making it a manageable hiking course in Jeongseon to tackle. Or, as parents, you can always carry them for a short stretch! (Go, parents, go!)
That's why we highly recommend it for any family traveling to Gangwon Province with children or pets! Mindeungsan's Dolline in Jeongseon is a fantastic destination for both beginner and experienced hikers.

However, be aware that there's a long stretch of ridge with no shade. It's best to avoid visiting during the middle of the day (12 PM - 2 PM). Personally, I found hiking early in the morning or late in the afternoon to be much more enjoyable. If you go a bit later, you might even catch a beautiful sunset!
If you're like me and want to visit Mindeungsan Dolline in the morning or late afternoon, consider an overnight stay in Jeongseon with your dog. This rural area is perfect for a relaxing getaway with your furry friend!

Important Notes for Jeongseon Mindeungsan Dolline
Just because you're starting on the shortest route, does that mean the hike will be easy? The answer is NO!
Even with the shortest route and time, you should never underestimate it. From the moment you start at the Turtle Shelter, you'll begin an uphill climb, including hundreds of stairs. We've seen visitors attempting the hike in dress shoes or slippers, which is incredibly dangerous, even if they don't get hurt immediately.

Athletic shoes are a must. Especially when hiking the Dolline with children or dogs, bottled water and simple snacks are also essential. It's a bonus if you remember to bring tissues. We recommend using the restroom at the Turtle Shelter before starting your hike, as there are no restrooms at the Dolline or Mindeungsan summit.

As you approach the summit, with no tall trees obstructing your view, the endless green carpet stretching along the ridge exudes a massive sense of vitality.

The area around the Dolline is particularly special, thanks to its sloping sides and unique basin-like topography. With its lush green, 'Teletubby Hill' scenery, even a casual snapshot can turn into an amazing, 'life-altering' picture!
Capture beautiful memories in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, with your children and dogs on this short, scenic hike! You'll realize there's no need to seek out Jeju Island's 'oreums' or venture overseas for such incredible natural beauty. Haha!
