Mi Compa Chava: The Ultimate Mexico City Seafood Experience
When most people think of Mexican cuisine, tacos instantly come to mind. But Mexico is an incredibly massive country—the 13th largest in the world—bordered by vast oceans on both sides, making its seafood culture exceptionally rich, diverse, and vibrant.
I am a huge seafood lover, but I never expected to find such incredibly fresh, ocean-to-table dishes right in the heart of landlocked Mexico City. Today, I am sharing my experience at Mi Compa Chava, a spot I saved the second I stumbled upon it online, knowing it was an absolute must-visit.
Opening Hours
12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
*Reservations are absolutely mandatory!
I made sure to book our table well in advance before arriving in Mexico City. When we got there, the place was packed to the brim—mostly with lively locals, creating an energetic, buzzing, and incredibly fun atmosphere. If you love a vibrant dining scene, you will absolutely adore this place.

The restaurant itself is spacious, clean, and effortlessly hip. For drinks, we asked our server for a local recommendation, and they enthusiastically suggested a classic Mexican favorite, so we ordered two.

They brought out glasses with a dark, savory mixture coated along the rim, accompanied by separate cans of beer. Since we looked completely puzzled by the setup, our server kindly poured the beer into the glass for us.
It turns out this is a classic Mexican michelada style featuring Clamato (a savory tomato juice blend) with a salty, sour, and spicy rim. If you want to try this unique visual and flavor experience, you can order a beer and ask for "Clamato extra."
I found the savory, tangy flavor profile quite interesting and finished my glass, but my partner found it a bit too unusual and couldn't quite get into it. It is definitely a unique local taste, but well worth ordering once for the experience!

*Complimentary starter served upon arrival
Every table is greeted with a complimentary starter. It is a warm, rich shrimp broth served in an espresso-style cup. It tastes incredibly comforting and savory—a perfect way to wake up your palate.
The dish I was most excited for was the **Señora Torres** (Mrs. Torres), which is the restaurant's absolute signature masterpiece.

The server brings out a large metal cylinder on a plate and carefully lifts it right before your eyes to reveal a stunning, towering stack of fresh seafood.

They then drizzle their signature house black sauce all over it. The tower is loaded with fresh raw tuna, cooked octopus, cooked shrimp, raw shrimp, raw scallops, avocado, red onion, and cucumber.

*Señora Torres Seafood Tower
We were instructed to gently break down the tower and spoon the seafood onto the crispy tostadas (fried tortillas) provided at the table.
Be warned: the portion size is absolutely massive! The photos do not do its actual scale justice. It was a delicious challenge for the two of us to finish it.
I really wanted to try some of their other dishes as well, but our stomachs simply didn't have the space.

I had my eye on the **Aguachile** (similar to ceviche but with a vibrant lime-chili marinade) packed with raw shrimp. But like the tower, the portions here are incredibly generous, making it impossible to add on for just two people.
Additionally, Mi Compa Chava features a live **charcoal grill** that fills the entire restaurant with an irresistible, smoky aroma. They offer massive grilled whole fish and grilled prawns. If we hadn't ordered the seafood tower, we definitely would have opted for the grilled shrimp.
However, we did manage to squeeze in some fresh **oysters (ostión)**!

They offer raw oysters sourced from different regions depending on daily availability, so be sure to ask your server what is fresh that day.
They are sold by the dozen or half-dozen (referred to in Spanish as *docena* or *media docena*).
We ordered a half-dozen, and they were incredibly sweet, plump, and fresh. Just keep in mind that oysters here are quite a premium treat and are on the pricier side compared to standard Mexico City dining.

To wrap up the meal, they gave us house-made candies that surprisingly tasted exactly like Clamato! It was a fun, sweet, and savory little parting gift.
We had an absolutely fantastic meal at Mi Compa Chava. If I ever find myself back in Mexico City, I will definitely return—ideally with a larger group so we can sample even more of the menu.
Just keep in mind that while it is worth every penny, it is a premium dining experience and is priced higher than your average local spot.

This was the massive line waiting outside as we left. Do yourself a favor and book your table before you go!
