During my time in Monterrey, Mexico, a home party in Texas gave me the perfect excuse to experience a land border crossing from Monterrey to the US.

Differences Between Air and Land Entry to the US
Automatic I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) Issuance
Typically, when traveling from many countries to the United States, you'll arrive by plane.
When entering the U.S. by air, the cost of your flight usually includes the automatic issuance of an I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record). For visa-exempt travelers (like many nationalities), simply having an approved ESTA allows entry into the U.S.
However, for land entry into the U.S. without a visa, it's crucial to visit a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office to obtain an I-94. This record is essential for legal stay.
The fee for the I-94 increased to $30 per person as of September 2025. 😭

You can apply for your I-94 online in advance, and it's typically valid for 3 months (90 days).

Reynosa: The Mexico-US Border City
Your Gateway to Texas from Mexico
To cross the border by land from Monterrey, Mexico, into Texas, you'll need to head to Reynosa, a key border city between Mexico and the U.S.

Reynosa, nestled right against the Texas border, is a primary entry point for land crossings. It's important to note that as a border city, Reynosa has historically faced significant security challenges due to drug-related issues, so always exercise caution.
Because of this, you'll typically encounter a military checkpoint when traveling from Monterrey to Reynosa. For travelers, it's usually a straightforward process. However, be aware that unauthorized photography at military checkpoints in Mexico is strictly prohibited.

The toll fee for passenger cars on the highway from Monterrey to Reynosa is 172 Mexican Pesos.

Three Border Bridges in Reynosa
Hidalgo, Pharr, and Anzalduas
Currently, there are three main bridges connecting Reynosa to Texas for land crossings.
McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa Bridge |
Operating Hours⌛24 hours Toll Fee 💵Passenger cars: $4 Open to both pedestrians and vehicles |
Pharr-Reynosa Bridge |
Operating Hours⌛6:00 AM to 12:00 AM Toll Fee 💵Passenger cars: $5 Open to commercial trucks and general vehicles |
Anzalduas Bridge |
Operating Hours⌛6:00 AM to 10:00 PM Toll Fee 💵Passenger cars: $3 Passenger cars only, no pedestrian access |
While I previously crossed into Texas via the McAllen-Reynosa Bridge around 1:30 AM, this time I arrived in Reynosa around 11:00 AM and opted for the Anzalduas Bridge to cross into Texas.

Luggage Inspection for Mexico-US Land Entry
Conducted in Mexico, not separately in the US
When entering the U.S. by land from Mexico, the U.S. typically doesn't conduct a separate luggage inspection. Instead, Mexico performs random luggage checks on its side. On a previous trip, we weren't checked, but this time our luggage was inspected.
Of course, if any suspicious behavior is observed, you could still be subject to a luggage inspection even after crossing into the U.S.
Mexico Land Entry Waiting Time
Typically Under 1 Hour
We began waiting at the Anzalduas Bridge around 11:15 AM on a weekday. We crossed into the U.S. border around 12:00 PM, meaning the entire process took approximately 45 minutes.

It seems that crossing the border early in the morning might be quicker than late at night, especially since all three border bridges are usually operational during daytime hours.
Mexico-US Immigration Process
ESTA Pre-Registration is Essential, I-94 Available On-Site
For visa-exempt travelers, the immigration process involves verifying both your ESTA and I-94. If you don't have an I-94, officers will direct you to an office to obtain one. However, if you're traveling visa-exempt and don't have an ESTA, you will be denied entry to the U.S. Therefore, ESTA pre-registration is absolutely essential before your trip to the U.S.
(It's advised that ESTA approval can take up to 3 days.)
If your passport check goes smoothly, your land entry from Mexico to the U.S. is complete!

With your ESTA and I-94 prepared, land entry can actually be more straightforward than flying, despite the challenging drive from Mexico to the U.S.
