It's no secret that Mexico often faces discussions around safety and security. When it comes to something as sensitive as money, it's highly recommended to use ATMs during daylight hours. Opt for ATMs located inside banks or major shopping malls. Additionally, avoid using your phone in buildings that house only an ATM. |

Among the various ATMs in Mexico, Santander is a standout recommendation, especially for its low fees!
Even when withdrawing the maximum amount, Santander boasts competitive Mexico ATM withdrawal fees, typically around 34 pesos (approximately ~$2).
Santander also has the most ATMs across Mexico, making them incredibly accessible. Plus, they're considered to have a lower risk of skimming compared to other ATMs.
Another huge perk for international travelers? They offer English language support, making transactions much smoother.
My Mexico ATM Withdrawal Experience
Regular cards often mean unfavorable exchange rates
These days, many travel cards waive foreign transaction fees, but it's important to remember that ATM withdrawal fees are usually separate.
Travel cards often offer a 100% preferential exchange rate, making them the absolute best choice for ATM withdrawals. Always prioritize using a travel card!
However, I completely forgot my travel card, leaving me no choice but to use a regular debit card for my Mexico ATM cash withdrawal.
This meant no preferential exchange rates and having to pay all the standard fees... 😢
When withdrawing the maximum equivalent of ~$300 with a regular card, my card fees totaled $0.5 + $3.3 = $3.8.
I started my Mexican peso withdrawal at a Santander ATM inside Liverpool Mall in Monterrey.
At first, it asked for a 10-digit PIN, which threw me off, but you just enter your usual 4-digit PIN and press 'Next'.
The maximum withdrawal limit per transaction seems to vary by card, but for typical cards, it's 5,000 pesos. After confirming the 30 peso fee and 4.8 peso tax, you can hit 'Accept' to get your cash.
Between the card fees, the Mexico ATM withdrawal fee, and the unfavorable exchange rate, I ended up losing around $25 on a 5,000 peso withdrawal! Talk about a triple whammy! 🤯
