With nearly 10 hours of round-trip bus travel alone

and having to climb monastery stairs, it was a bit tough, but

the scenery, appearing to float above the rocks, was absolutely worth the effort to see! ✨

Let's break down the journey of the tour I experienced,

along with the schedule, entrance fees, and even the dress code. ✍🏻

My travel buddy and I, the very next day after arriving in Athens,

on the second day of our Greece trip, embarked on the Meteora tour.

Since we made it all the way to Athens, Greece, we also wanted to explore nearby areas,

and most of all, I really wanted to see the Meteora monasteries,

perched atop gigantic rocks and appearing to float in the sky, with my own eyes.

The tour we actually took was:

This meant we didn't have to separately plan for transport or the monastery route,

Meteora Tour: Was it worth dedicating 14 hours?

To put it simply, my travel buddy and I were absolutely thrilled—!

As a day trip destination from Athens, it was definitely worth visiting.

The colossal, towering rock formations and

the monasteries perched atop them came into view all at once,

and it was far more mystical and magnificent than in the photos.

Meteora is where, in the 14th to 16th centuries, Greek Orthodox monastic communities

established themselves atop massive rocks.

Being able to experience the unique natural landscape

and ancient monastic spaces all at once was also something truly special! ✨

It was also great that the itinerary wasn't just a quick look at the views before heading back.

We got to go inside **three of the six monasteries**, and

see the village from above, as well as panoramic views.

The views changed with every monastery we moved between,

and seeing Kalabaka village nestled among the rocks and the winding roads

at a glance from some spots was incredibly refreshing—it truly cleared my mind!

If you're someone who loves natural landscapes, this is definitely a must-visit.

There were so many breathtaking scenes, I had trouble narrowing down my photos,

with incredible views appearing at every stop.

At the scenic photo spots, our local guide even

took photos of my partner and me together, which was wonderful.

It truly felt like stepping right into the landscapes I'd only seen in photos,

and the sheer beauty of the scenery among the rock mountains alone

made the long journey absolutely worth it—!

Athens to Meteora Day Trip: How We Spent Our Day

Here's the route we actually took

Early morning: Boarded a large bus in Athens

→ Approximately 5 hours later: Arrived in Kalabaka for lunch

→ From the restaurant: Transferred to a small group minivan

→ For approximately 4 hours: Toured 3 monasteries and various photo spots

→ Dinner in Kalambaka

→ Another journey of about 5 hours, arriving in Athens around 10:00 PM - 10:30 PM

On the front window of the large bus we took,

METEORA THRONES: TRAVEL CENTER it said

(+ Later, during another tour in Greece, the driver

didn't properly check our names,

and we ended up on the wrong tour bus... haha.

So, it's always good to check both the bus signage and the driver's list of names together!)

We took a large bus from Athens

and traveled to a rest-stop-like restaurant in Kalambaka for lunch.

At the restaurant, you'd choose from the menu displayed at the counter,

and a staff member would plate it for you.

After lunch, we split into small groups and transferred to minibuses.

I don't remember how many people were in each,

but I recall being called by name at the restaurant

and heading to our assigned minibuses.

And so, we rode the minibuses

and began exploring the Meteora monasteries and photo spots.

On that day's itinerary, out of the six monasteries,

we actually went inside three of them.

Our guide would drop us off in front of each monastery,

and we were free to explore the interiors on our own.

I vividly remember it being fascinating to even encounter two monks in black robes-!

Inside the monasteries, we saw stone-walled corridors, walls adorned with sacred paintings,

and even small courtyards.

It was incredible to actually walk through monasteries we'd only seen from afar,

and it truly felt like a fulfilling tour since it wasn't just about admiring the views! ✨

The first monastery we climbed, perched high on the rocky mountain,

had so many stairs that it was the most challenging.

Luckily, the second and third ones became progressively easier to navigate.

After completing the local tour,

we had dinner in Kalambaka and boarded the bus again,

driving for about 5 hours to arrive in Athens around 10:00 PM - 10:30 PM.

Since it was late, we took a taxi to our accommodation,

The Athens Gate Hotel,

and I remember being absolutely exhausted when we finally got back to the hotel, haha!

Meteora Tour Guide: Was English sufficient?

When we visited,

we traveled with other international travelers, listening to the local guide's explanations in English.

The small-talk atmosphere with fellow foreign travelers

felt unique and fun to me,

and I even found it preferable that there were no Koreans on our tour.

When we visited, it was 3 Euros,

but now the monastery entrance fee is listed as 5 Euros per person per monastery.

(Greece, too, experiencing rising prices!)

If you plan to visit all three monasteries, it's 15 Euros per person.

When we were there,
