My trip to Greece 🇬🇷, which I combined with a visit to Turkey

Since I was only staying in Greece for about 4 days,

going all the way to Santorini felt a bit rushed.

What I ended up choosing was

no other than a day trip from Athens:

Delphi (Delphoi), Arahova Day Tour

Delphi, known as the center of the world!

It was unexpectedly and truly wonderful,

making it the tour I'd most recommend in Greece!

How to Book the Delphi (Delphoi) & Arahova Day Tour

Arahova is a village tour,

so a separate guide explanation wasn't necessary,

but a guide explanation for Delphi was important!

For the English day tour, once you arrive in Delphi,

you purchase your entrance tickets individually and explore.

(The English day tour includes an English audio guide.)

Tour Itinerary

A unique feature of this tour is that

you meet your guide at 📍 Halandri,

a station a bit removed from the center of Athens!

The city center is quite congested,

so this is to shorten travel time getting out to the suburbs!

Instead, it was great to be able to spend that extra time exploring the tour sites.

Most people will probably be staying in the center of Athens,

but getting there by subway wasn't too difficult!

(Approximately 20 minutes by subway)

We stayed near Syntagma Square,

so we took the subway from 📍 Syntagma!

After purchasing your ticket, head in the direction of the airport.

A one-way transport ticket costs

After getting off at the station and exiting through To Vrilissia Exit,

we were instructed to meet in front of the exit.

⏰ Meeting Time: 7:50 AM

We were instructed to arrive 10 minutes earlier than the meeting time!

So, we arrived at 7:40 AM.

All tour participants were able to communicate in English,

and we were the only Koreans.

On the way to the destination,

the guide explained the history in detail in English.

Since we could only manage simple English communication,

we ended up dozing off during the history lesson ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

📍 Cafe Stop

Before heading to Delphi, we made a quick stop at a cafe!

It was a great spot to grab a drink or a quick cookie,

and use the restroom.

Comfy sneakers (lots of uphill walking outdoors)

Sunglasses or a hat (the sun can be intense!)

The Delphi archaeological site is nestled on the side of a mountain,

situated at an altitude of about 500-600 meters above sea level.

As soon as we arrived, the views were absolutely breathtaking! ⛰️

When you're exploring Delphi, always start with

the outdoor Delphi archaeological site (Sanctuary of Apollo)!

What's inside the museum

makes much more sense after you've seen the outdoor ruins.

Exploring the Outdoor Delphi Archaeological Site

The Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi was one of the most

sacred and influential religious centers in ancient Greece!

Dedicated to Apollo,

ancient people believed Delphi to be the 'center of the world.'

Honestly, as it's such an ancient site,

you'll find that very few structures remain in their complete form.

The Omphalos, meaning 'navel' in Greek.

Legend has it that Zeus, seeking the center of the world,

released two eagles, one from the east and one from the west.

They met exactly at Delphi.

To commemorate this, the Omphalos was placed at the Temple of Apollo,

and thus Delphi came to be believed as the center of the world!

You'll also find the Treasury of the Athenians here,

a storage place for offerings to the gods and war spoils.

It was quite fascinating to see that this one, at least,

still retains some of its original form!

On the stone wall, a slave emancipation document is inscribed,

However, instead of the owner directly freeing the slave,

it's said that the slave was sold to the god Apollo.

Since a slave sold to a god became the property of the deity,

no human could enslave them again.

The Serpent Column of Plataea

is a monument commemorating Ancient Greece's

decisive victory in the Persian Wars!

I remember thinking, 'Didn't I see this in Turkey?!'

It turns out that it was moved to Istanbul by Emperor Constantine in the past,

and what remains in Delphi today is a replica.

The highlight of today's tour is the Temple of Apollo 🏛️

It was the most authoritative oracle site

throughout all of Ancient Greece,

The temple underwent several destructions and reconstructions,

and the Dorian-style architecture built in the 4th century BC

is said to be the form we see today!

The higher you ascend,

the more magnificent the scenery unfolds in Delphi!

It became clear why so many people, facing momentous decisions,

sought the oracle here.

Perched majestically on the mountain is the Ancient Theater.

During the Pythian Games of Ancient Greece,

this theater hosted musical and artistic competitions

dedicated to Apollo.

It was different from other games, which primarily focused on sports,

likely because Apollo was a deity skilled

in music and poetry!

Located at the highest point of the Sanctuary of Apollo is the

athletic facility known as the Ancient Stadium of Delphi.

This was the venue for the athletic events during the Pythian Games.

This stadium primarily hosted competitions centered around running events.

It's amazing how you can still see the starting and finishing lines in the photos!

Winners were awarded laurel wreaths,

rather than material rewards!

Delphi Archaeological Museum

The outdoor area was just so incredibly beautiful,

so we totally messed up our time management and only had 30 minutes left! 🤣

"Let's see the whole museum in 30 minutes...!"

That's what we said as we ran through it! ㅋㅋㅋ

We didn't even have time for an audio guide, so...

I just quickly snapped photos of whatever looked cool 🤣

Honestly, the Delphi Archaeological Museum didn't leave a huge impression on me...

If we had visited the museum first and somehow missed the outdoor ruins of Delphi,

I think I would have been incredibly disappointed!

Arachova

After finishing our Delphi tour, we arrived in Arachova,

a charming town located just 20 minutes away!

From the moment you step in, Arachova is filled with quaint charm,

and this lovely town is also famous for being

a filming location for the drama “Descendants of the Sun.”

During our free time, we were free to grab lunch,

and explore all the charming corners of Arachova!

As soon as we arrived, we headed straight for lunch.

Every alley in this town was just so beautiful ❤️

It was definitely a place I'd wanted to visit along with Delphi.

For lunch, we opted for a freestyle meal and found this spot on Google!

It was a charming, home-like restaurant with

beautiful views of the outside scenery 🍽️

In both Turkey and Greece, bread is usually complimentary,

but water usually needs to be purchased 🥹

We decided to stick to the recommended dishes!

We ordered a dish that seemed like seasoned greens,

a hearty bean soup, and some meat with fries.

My mom was absolutely delighted with the flavors!

For me, it felt like wholesome home-cooking with a healthy touch (?)

I ordered without much thought,

and the portions were so generous that we even had some left over, which was a shame! 🤣

After finishing our meal and stepping out of the restaurant,

this stunning view unfolded before us!

Now, it was time to freely wander through Arachova

and slowly soak in its atmosphere!

Our guide recommended two spots

that we decided to check out.

1️⃣ Church of Agios Georgios

(The church located at the very top of Arachova)

2️⃣ Arachova Clock Tower

(Offers a panoramic view of Arachova)

To reach the church located at Arachova's highest point,

we started climbing the stairs!

This charming church and clock tower

are perched right at Arachova's summit!

Even though it's the highest spot,

the panoramic view wasn't as expansive as I had imagined!

Still, it only took about 15 minutes to ascend,

making it a worthwhile climb!

With time ticking, we practically ran to the Arachova Clock Tower!

You can find the Clock Tower by heading towards the Arachova Museum,

that's where it's located! 🕰️

The Arahova Clock Tower offered a charmingly beautiful panoramic view of Arahova

that I could take in all at once!

It made me realize why this place is so famous.

It was a view of my most beloved, cute little village,

so I spent a long time admiring it 🥹🧡

Time was a bit tight,

so I quickly rushed back to the meeting point with our guide.

If you only have time to visit one place,

I would STRONGLY recommend the Arahova Clock Tower ‼️

Our guide drove us back to Halandri Station,

and we took the subway back to the heart of Athens!

That day's beautiful sunset 🌅

I spent ages at Syntagma Square, people-watching

and enjoying the scenery!

I'm really in Greece!

Before heading back to our accommodation,

we stopped by the closest supermarket in Athens

to our place!

From simple snacks and fruits to beer,

you could think of it as a local neighborhood supermarket!

We bought a few things perfect for enjoying with a beer

and some items for a simple breakfast.

A long but wonderfully happy day.

I'd definitely say that a Delphi day tour is an absolute must-do!!!

It was by far the most satisfying experience I had in Athens.
