Look no further! I'm excited to share my detailed review of this fantastic hotel.

1. Choosing Your Hotel Location in Porto

Porto is famously hilly, and I mean really hilly. When you're walking 10+ miles a day, which is standard for European explorations, choosing the right hotel location is crucial.

The area around Aliados Boulevard and São Bento Station is truly the heart of Porto's downtown.

You'll find all the shops, restaurants, the bustling Bolhão Market, and convenient metro access for airport transfers or a trip to Jardim do Morro, all within easy reach. This makes it my top recommendation for where to stay.

Especially if you're visiting in the summer, Western European weather can be scorching hot. Having your hotel in a central spot like this allows you to easily pop back for a quick rest and cool-down.

I certainly appreciated being able to head back to the hotel for a break after sweating through the midday heat.

While some travelers might prefer a hotel with a Douro River view, be warned: those areas are *seriously* steep.

Unless you plan to spend your entire trip gazing out a window, you can enjoy those stunning river vistas from a riverside restaurant or the Jardim do Morro without the daily climb.

The Mercure Porto Centro Aliados hotel, which I chose, is ideally situated in the city center, just a 6-minute walk from São Bento Station and a 4-minute walk from Bolhão Market.

With its fantastic location, impeccable cleanliness, and reasonable price point, it's a solid recommendation.

2. Detailed Review of Mercure Porto Centro Aliados

The hotel operates out of a beautifully renovated older building in the city center. Given Porto's charmingly historic (and sometimes worn) aesthetic, the exterior and entrance might seem a little understated.

But step inside, and it's a completely different story!

The hotel's interior is bright and airy, with a lovely sky-blue color scheme that feels incredibly refreshing.

The rooms feature hardwood floors, which I always prefer over carpet for cleanliness. Near the entrance, you'll find a safe, a mini-fridge, and the bathroom.

The bed was spotless and comfortably spacious for two. (A crucial detail for any traveler!) And while the photo might cut it off, there are convenient power outlets on both sides of the bed.

Even for a standard room, the size is quite generous. You'll have plenty of space to spread out your luggage without feeling cramped!

The large table was perfect for organizing belongings or enjoying snacks.

Bathroom amenities are from NUXE, a nice touch for a brand hotel, showing attention to detail.

The toilet is in a separate alcove behind the sink, accessible through another door within the bathroom, offering a nice bit of privacy.

A hairdryer is provided, of course, and the shower stall was immaculately clean.

I had a standard room with a garden view, and opening the curtains revealed the hotel's swimming pool. It's a rather small pool, but plenty of guests were enjoying sunbathing and swimming there.

The green foliage and blue water create a really pretty view.

The price point is excellent for a 4-star hotel in the city center. Definitely a win.

For an arbitrary date in late 2026, here are approximate prices for a standard double room for one night, including taxes:

If you have a higher membership tier on Trip.com, you might find even lower rates (I saw prices around ~$135).

Either way, Trip.com currently offers the best prices. For reference, the official website's price was around ~$210, making Trip.com over ~$38 cheaper.

3. Breakfast and Other Facilities

For this trip, I decided to treat myself and booked a room with breakfast included.

It's a buffet, but rather than an extensive spread, it offers a solid selection of European-style breakfast items, perfect for a quick and satisfying start to the day.

As someone who enjoys cold cuts and cheeses, I found it perfectly adequate. However, if you expect a lavish, full-cooked breakfast, you might find it a bit simple.

The ground floor lobby boasts a fantastic lounge area. There's a bar with beer taps and plenty of comfortable seating. The photos really capture the inviting atmosphere!

I didn't order anything from the bar, but I did have to come down to ask them to open a bottle of wine since there wasn't an opener in the room – a minor but noteworthy detail!
