When I was planning my independent trip to Kota Kinabalu, the two most important factors for choosing accommodation were **price and location**.

If your goal is a luxurious resort stay, then a resort might be perfect. But if you're like me, spending most of your day exploring the city and hopping between islands, you won't be in your hotel room much.

That's why I opted for the **Mercure Kota Kinabalu City Centre**, offering stays around **~$41-~$55 per night** and ideally located near Jesselton Point.

While the rooms showed a bit of age, the location was incredibly convenient, and having a pool made it a fantastic value for the price.

The biggest reason I chose this hotel was definitely its **location**.

Jesselton Mall and Jesselton Point are directly across from the hotel, and Suria Sabah Mall is also just a short walk away.

If you're planning island hopping tours from Jesselton Point, the convenience of not having to travel far first thing in the morning is a huge plus!

Even the famous Gaya Street Sunday Market is only about a 10-minute walk away.

In fact, I deliberately chose this spot because I'd heard that accommodations right next to the Sunday Market could be quite noisy and bustling.

It felt just right – close enough to walk to all the main attractions, but slightly removed from the most chaotic part of the city center. This balance was perfect for me.

As you can see from the photos, the rooms are generally clean, but they don't have that super modern, brand-new hotel vibe.

There's a slight sense of age, so if pristine, cutting-edge room conditions are a top priority, you might find it a little underwhelming.

However, considering you're in the heart of Kota Kinabalu for around **~$41-~$55 a night**, I felt it was a trade-off well worth making.

The lobby was also quite tidy, making for a pleasant first impression.

For a Superior King room, without breakfast, here's a comparison of prices:

Under the same conditions, Trip.com was about **~$4** cheaper.

Despite being a budget-friendly hotel, the pool looked quite impressive!

Located on the 25th floor, there's an outdoor swimming pool and a poolside bar. During the day, you get sweeping views of Kota Kinabalu's ocean and city skyline.

It's not a massive resort-style pool, but it's certainly big enough for a refreshing dip after a day of sightseeing.

I didn't get a chance to swim during the day as I was out exploring, but the evening ambiance was particularly lovely.

With the pool lights on and the option to enjoy a cocktail or beer from the poolside bar while taking in the night view, it really set a fantastic vacation mood. It was the perfect way to unwind.

Coming back after a day of exploring and sipping on a mojito or beer was the ideal end to each day.

The Mercure Kota Kinabalu City Centre truly shines with its location, directly opposite Jesselton Point, making island hopping a breeze. Plus, you can walk to shopping malls and other city attractions, all while finding rooms starting from around **~$41-~$55 per night** – that's its biggest advantage!

While the rooms might show a little wear, the inclusion of a 25th-floor swimming pool and poolside bar makes it an incredibly satisfying value-for-money accommodation choice in Kota Kinabalu. 😊
