Bolhão Market is located right in the heart of Porto city.
From our Airbnb with Douro River views, near the Dom Luís I Bridge,
it was about a 20-30 minute walk to Bolhão Market.
We decided to grab just what we needed to enjoy back at our accommodation, so we headed over!
Following Google Maps to Bolhão Market,
we found ourselves entering a space that really exuded a modern market vibe!
If you go through the entrance shown in the left photo,
you'll find stairs on both sides leading down to the lower floor.
The main market at Porto's Bolhão is set up on the very bottom floor,
while the upper floors are occupied by other facilities.
Once you descend from the entrance, you'll see so many
stalls!
It was much larger than I expected, making it a great place to wander around.
Beyond countless delicious food options, there's a truly diverse array of goods,
from souvenirs and spirits to seafood and flowers.
True to Porto's reputation as a famous wine city,
there's a fantastic selection of bite-sized snacks, perfect for pairing.
You'll find baguettes topped with all sorts of ingredients,
as well as rolls, jamón, and much more.
A delightful variety of appetizers made with meat, cheese, and seafood!
At the specialty cheese shops, I saw an incredible variety of cheeses
I'd never encountered before, including some available for tasting at 10 euros each.
That distinctive, pungent cheese aroma wafted through the air
every time we passed a cheese stall!
A wonderful array of nuts was also displayed,
allowing you to pick and choose to your heart's content.
As expected from Portugal, a true city of olives,
you can explore a wide variety of olive types here.
I had only ever seen black and yellowish-green olives before,
so it was fascinating to discover some entirely new kinds!
Also, keep an eye out for various dried fruits! (The figs really caught my attention).
Along the walls, seafood stalls were lined up, displaying an abundance of seafood
that was ready to eat without any preparation, making it a joy to browse.
Even though we had an Airbnb with cooking facilities,
we opted for the convenient, ready-to-eat salmon sashimi to take away, because who wants to cook on vacation?!
Back at our accommodation, it tasted absolutely divine with some wine!
(And the freshness was superb).
Beyond what's pictured, there's a much wider variety of seafood,
so definitely go check it out!
Towards the end of the stalls, you'll find fresh local Porto fruits
and convenient fruit cups for sale.
We also grabbed a ready-to-eat fruit cup to take away.
I think one fruit cup cost around 3 or 4 euros.
We enjoyed the fruit back at our accommodation with our other snacks,
and it was so fresh, sweet, and delicious! (Especially the strawberries).
Since we visited Bolhão Market in the evening,
some of the bread had already sold out, so the selection wasn't huge.
But the jamón looked so delicious, we had to grab some bread with jamón to take away!
Europe truly is a bread paradise!
(Even just plain bread tastes amazing).
On another side of Bolhão Market, you'll find stalls dedicated exclusively to drinks!
From Port wine, Portugal's signature vino,
to green, white, and red wines,
there are shops boasting a truly diverse selection of wines,
and others offering different types of spirits.
That green wine I was recommended at Tapabento during lunch
was surprisingly delicious, so I decided to ask the shop owner for a recommendation!
Just tell them your preferences, and they'll recommend the perfect wine,
and you can even enjoy a tasting, which was fantastic (they were super friendly!).
Here's the green wine I picked up based on their recommendation and enjoyed back at my accommodation!
TOJEIRA
As a total wine newbie, I found it light with just the right amount of sweetness,
making it a perfect wine for beginners to enjoy easily.
It absolutely perfect with salmon sashimi!
The wine shop owner asked if I wanted the cork opened for me,
and I asked them to go ahead,
but they actually packaged it with an easy-to-open cap,
which made it super convenient to enjoy!

Salmon sashimi, fruit cups, jamón, and lobster
The lobster was served with a unique Porto sauce,
offering a tangy and distinctive flavor.
(It truly complemented the wine!)
On my first day, I visited Bolhão Market late in the evening,
only managing to grab a few dinner bites before heading out,
and realized I hadn't seen the whole market, so a return visit was a must! Haha.
(There was such a surprising variety of food, I just had to explore again!)
Croquettes I completely missed on my first visit!
They had so many different kinds of croquettes,
and I picked a spicy one – I wasn't sure if it was jalapeño or something similar!
Seriously, it was the perfect beer snack – yum!
It was more delicious than I expected, and I instantly wanted more!
(Though, personally, I found the price a tad on the higher side.)
Towards the very end of Bolhão Market,
you'll find tables and chairs, perfect for enjoying all the market treats
right then and there.
In the center, there's also a designated area for standing and enjoying your food.
It was drizzling that day, which could have been tricky,
but thankfully, most of the dining spots
were covered, making it super comfortable to eat.
This time, I visited Bolhão Market after having lunch,
so I was on the hunt for some delightful snacks.
Following my husband, a big fan of jamón, we made a beeline for a bakery.
There were so many appetizing and delicious-looking breads,
my eyes truly widened in amazement – and the sizes were no joke! Haha.
Of course, we also ordered a draft beer to go with the bread!
In Porto, draft beer is almost always Super Bock.
Prices vary depending on the size.
A bottled beer is 3 euros.
The cups they provide are reusable,
so you can reuse them or even keep them as a lovely travel souvenir!
We grabbed a table and settled down with our jamón sandwich and
a refreshing sip of beer for our snack.
Along with bread that's fragrant and perfectly soft,
And the cheese and jamón? Simply heavenly, of course!
Since the jamón itself is salty and the cheese is salty too,
Overall, it's bursting with salty flavor,
but it's absolutely perfect for soaking up that authentic European vibe.
(It's that magical kind of food you just can't stop reaching for!)

I highly recommend a visit to Porto's Bolhão Market!
