Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel
During my recent business trip to Sabah, I had the opportunity to tour and stay at almost every major hotel in Kota Kinabalu. Out of all of them, the Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel easily secured a spot in my top three favorite properties.
The hotel is situated right in the heart of downtown, making it incredibly easy to get anywhere in the city. As you'd expect from a Marriott Bonvoy favorite, the rooms are pristine, the service is top-notch, and the culinary options are outstanding.
The only minor drawbacks are that the immediate area can get quite congested, and the total room count feels a bit limited compared to massive resorts. However, this hotel is far too good to experience as part of a rushed package tour. It is the perfect spot for independent travelers booking a relaxing, self-paced vacation.
One unique detail about the Marriott layout is that from the lobby, the elevators are split into two distinct banks:
This means if you want to go from your room to the pool, you have to take Elevator A down to the 1st-floor lobby, walk over, and take Elevator B up. It is a bit of a minor hassle, but everything else about the hotel makes up for it!
The main room tiers here are the Deluxe City View and the Deluxe Sea View. I originally booked a City View but was generously upgraded to a Sea View! A huge thank you to the front desk team.
The King Bed Room is extremely comfortable, sleek, and modern. It comes equipped with a cozy sofa, work table, flat-screen TV, and an open-concept bathroom.
The bathroom features a trendy open-concept layout that makes the entire room feel much larger. There is a sliding wooden partition that you can close for complete privacy. Since I was staying alone, I left it open to enjoy the spacious feel.
One surprising thing about the Marriott is the hot water system. Unlike many modern hotels, the hot water doesn't kick in instantly. There is a small sign advising guests to let the water run for about 5 minutes to heat up.
I brought a travel shower filter with me and hooked it up immediately. The water quality in Kota Kinabalu can vary, but here it seemed relatively clean. After a two-day stay, the filter only showed a very slight discoloration, which is great compared to other properties in town. (Note: I still recommend using bottled water for brushing your teeth!)
Unlike some resorts that have weak, wall-mounted hair dryers, the Marriott provides a high-quality, powerful dryer. Another huge plus: they provide standard plastic water bottles. Some hotels in the area use refillable glass bottles, which can sometimes have a slightly musty taste, so I was very happy to see these clean plastic bottles here.
Take a look at this gorgeous view from the Deluxe Sea View room! Waking up to the deep blue waters of the South China Sea is absolutely worth the upgrade.
After heading down to the lobby and switching to Elevator Bank B, I made my way to the breakfast restaurant. The dining area is clean, spacious, and serves an incredibly diverse spread of delicious local and international dishes. (I was so busy eating that I forgot to take photos of the food station!)
Right next to the breakfast restaurant is the stunning infinity pool. It overlooks the ocean and is open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The layout and amenities of the Deluxe City View room are identical to the Sea View room; the only difference is the perspective out your window.
If you are traveling with family, the Two-Bedroom Suite is a fantastic option. Note that suites with an outdoor terrace do not feature a bathtub, whereas suites without a terrace do. If you are traveling with a toddler, you can request a baby bathtub at the time of booking.
The Marriott rooftop bar is famous for its sunset and night views over the city. I visited during the daytime, which was still beautiful, but I'll definitely make it a point to head up at night on my next visit!
Looking down at the infinity pool from the rooftop really showcases how beautifully designed this property is. My stay here was absolutely satisfying, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality city hotel in Sabah.
There are separate elevators from the hotel lobby: Elevator A is exclusively for guest rooms, and Elevator B is for the restaurants and swimming pool. Therefore, to go from your room to the pool, you must take Elevator A down to the 1st-floor lobby and transfer to Elevator B.
An extra bed can be added to King bed rooms for an additional fee, but extra beds are not permitted in Twin bed rooms. The maximum occupancy per room is 2 adults and 2 children aged 11 and under.
Hot water does not come out immediately; you need to let the water run for about 5 minutes. As for bathtubs, they are not available in rooms with a terrace, but are only installed in rooms without a terrace.
The hotel swimming pool opens at 6:00 AM and closes at 8:00 PM.
