How to Get to the Old Vine House

The Old Vine House is easy to find if you head down from Maribor Old Town

to the Drava Riverfront.

It's located near the Old Bridge, a famous photo spot,

making it the perfect place to soak in Maribor's

relaxed atmosphere.

Along the riverfront, you'll find a wide promenade,

lined with charming cafes.

The building with the red roof and the tree growing up its wall?

That's the Old Vine House!

Old Vine House Details

1. Atmosphere and Seating

The first thing you'll notice when you visit the Old Vine House is the world's oldest grapevine.

They say this tree has been here for over 400 years, surviving invasions and wars!

I expected a massively thick trunk for such an ancient tree, but it wasn't quite that.

Instead, countless vines beautifully embrace the building.

Beside the ancient vine,

two younger grapevines, like its descendants,

completely fill the building together.

The atmosphere of the old building was truly wonderful,

but I was surprised once again by the interior design.

Unlike what it looked like from the outside, it was incredibly luxurious,

to the point where I felt a slight bit intimidated.

However, as it's a popular spot for many tourists,

there were plenty of casually dressed guests,

and the staff were friendly, which put me at ease.

Next to the entrance, you can spot the Guinness World Records certificate and

a display of various wines.

Inside, there were indoor seating areas and a wine cellar.

I couldn't take photos inside because there were other guests,

but it was larger than I expected,

and the atmosphere wasn't crowded at all.

The day I visited, there were intermittent showers,

but I still decided to enjoy my wine outdoors rather than inside,

savoring the beautiful scenery of Maribor.

If the weather isn't too hot,

I highly recommend relaxing in the outdoor seating area, where you can enjoy the cool river breeze,

gazing at the Old Bridge and the riverbanks,

and indulging in some leisurely time.

2. Menu and Prices

Honestly, when I first entered, I was so overwhelmed by the ambiance that

I was a little worried about the prices.

Thankfully, the tasting programs were priced

quite reasonably, not putting a huge dent in the wallet.

Glass wines start from 5 Euros per glass,

and many locals simply enjoyed a glass of wine,

sitting for a bit before heading off.

3-glass tastings begin at 11 Euros,

and prices for 5-glass tastings range up to 41.5 Euros, offering a variety of options.

Depending on whether you prefer white, red, fresh, or aged wines,

you can enjoy different tasting experiences at various price points.

3. My Tasting Experience

As someone who isn't a connoisseur of wine,

and typically enjoys a light white wine,

I opted for the most affordable basic version.

My husband, wanting to try something a bit different,

chose the second option.

Two of his glasses were the same as the basic, but the last glass was different.

If you're visiting as a pair and want to sample a wider variety,

I highly recommend ordering different options to avoid overlap.

(e.g., White + Red, Fresh + Aged)

The tasting set even included three kinds of finger foods, which was perfect for pairing one with each glass.

There are also additional snacks you can order, so that's good to keep in mind.

Personally, the most delicious wine for me was a fresh wine called RANINA, which is said to be a representative wine of the Maribor region.

It had a clean, refreshing taste that wasn't overwhelming, so I thought, "Oh! This is really good!"

As we chatted and sipped, they prepared the second wine for us.

It was a Slovenian wine called Bračko, and it had a wonderfully aromatic bouquet – I really liked this one too.

The final glass was a slightly heavier wine than the previous ones, called AVOS, a smooth wine with a subtle peach hue.

My husband's final glass was an aged wine, a 2024 vintage Traminec & Rumeni Muškat from Jeruzalem Ormož.

Honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference between 'fresh' and 'aged' myself. Still, I loved that all the recommended wines were delicious. The wines introduced here aren't available in regular supermarkets, so if you like them, it might be a good idea to buy them here.

The atmosphere wasn't pushy about expensive programs, and many people were just enjoying a single glass, so it was a relaxed environment where you could try a variety of wines, which I really appreciated.
