Maribor's Old Town isn't very large, so
I highly recommend exploring it on foot.
If you're visiting Maribor by car,
rather than trying to navigate into the Old Town,
I recommend parking on the opposite side of the river and then walking over.

I parked at EuroPark, a large shopping mall across the river,
and then walked to the Old Town. EuroPark is the
closest spot to Maribor Old Town where you can find free parking.
Inside EuroPark, you'll find a variety of restaurants,
shops, and a large supermarket, so it was
perfect for grabbing snacks or water at the grocery store on the way back
after exploring the Old Town.
EuroPark is located right by the river,
so it's only about a 15-minute walk to the heart of the Old Town,
allowing you to enjoy the beautiful riverside scenery as you go.
Even from the bus or train stations, it's about a 10-minute walk.
There's no public transport that takes you directly into the Old Town,
so keep in mind that walking is essential.
Strolling Through Maribor Old Town
Lent, Main Square, Plague Column

My first impression of Maribor was that of a clean and charming small city,
and the river scenery, in particular, was absolutely stunning.

Low-rise buildings of the Old Town line the riverside,
with pointed spires visible behind them – it was
exactly the kind of European scene I had envisioned.
Viewing the Old Town from the bridge or across the river
allows you to take in the entire city at a glance,
so I highly recommend stopping there for the view.

Crossing the street, the actual atmosphere inside the alley was a bit different,
with a bustling feel from charming little shops.
What was also impressive was that there were many car-free streets,
making it wonderful for a relaxed stroll.
It was especially easy to take photos and look around.

As I walked, I came across the Main Square,
a great spot to sit and relax with plenty of cafes and restaurants around.
Right in front was the Plague Monument.
I'd seen them in Vienna and Budapest too, but each had a very different vibe.
Maribor's Plague Monument felt a bit more modest compared to others,
with a smaller scale and less elaborate decoration.
From the tranquil riverside scenery and the lively atmosphere within the narrow alleys,
to the historical buildings around the Main Square,
I could enjoy a variety of charms.

Walking through the Old Town, the first thing that catches your eye is
the church and monastery building with its red-brick exterior and two towers standing side by side.

I went inside, as it was open for visitors, and was completely surprised by its magnificent interior.
It's still an active church where mass is held, so it seems to be open to the public outside of mass times.
Entry was free and unrestricted.

There were prayer spaces on both sides, and in front, an altar enshrining a statue of Mary,
which is said to be how the church earned its name, "Mother of Mercy."

With intricate decorations everywhere and
unique murals I hadn't seen elsewhere,
it was a wonderful place to stop by while strolling through the Old Town.

Right in front of the church is a small square,
and next to it, you'll find the Maribor Tourist Information Center.
With Slovenia's diverse tourist attractions,
and a place where you could layer in Maribor travel information,
it was a great spot to visit at the start of a trip.

Just a short walk from the Basilica,
you'll find Maribor Castle.

Maribor Castle, located within the Old Town,
wasn't like other European castles I'd seen in different regions,
which often stand like fortresses on a hill.
Currently, the castle serves as a museum, so
you need to enter the museum to see inside the castle.
Inside, they say there's a magnificent staircase, a banquet hall,
a knight's room, and a chapel, among other attractions, but
I visited on a Monday, so I couldn't go in.

Feeling a bit disappointed, I walked around and admired the exterior,
but it was definitely smaller in scale
compared to castles or palaces in major cities.

If you want to explore the interior of Maribor Castle,
I recommend checking the opening hours and admission fees
of the Maribor Regional Museum beforehand.
Slovene National Theatre Maribor

Address | Center, Slovenska ulica 27, 2000 Maribor, Slovenia |

As I strolled through the Old Town, a stunning building caught my eye and made me pause.
It's Maribor's representative performing arts theater, hosting plays, operas, and even ballets.

In the past, it housed a theater and a casino,
and it's also where the first Slovene-language production premiered,
giving it significant historical meaning.
The interior is primarily for audience members, so
I couldn't go inside.
It's directly across from the Cathedral,
making it a great spot to explore together.
Maribor Cathedral
Maribor Cathedral (St. John the Baptist Cathedral)

Address | Slomškov trg 20, 2000 Maribor, Slovenia |
Opening Hours | 6:30 AM - 7:30 PM ※ Entry may be restricted during mass and other church events |

Maribor Cathedral is the largest religious building
in Maribor's Old Town.
Built in the 12th century, it has continuously undergone
restoration and renovation to this day,
resulting in a fascinating blend of various architectural styles.

In front of the cathedral, there was a statue and an explanatory plaque
for Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek.
He was a significant figure who greatly influenced Maribor's religion,
education, and cultural development in the 19th century,
and is said to be the first Slovenian to be beatified.

The interior of the cathedral was also freely open for visitors.
The calm and quiet atmosphere of the interior
felt truly solemn.

Towards the front, I noticed the magnificent stained-glass windows and
sculptures adorning various parts of the altar, and
a massive organ stood proudly at the back.

Not just at the front, but also along both sides,
there were stained-glass windows with diverse illustrations and
exquisitely decorated prayer areas.

Opulent decorations were added everywhere,
making it a wonderful place to explore and appreciate at a leisurely pace.

I also sat for a moment to pray, and finally,
made a donation at the back and lit a candle before leaving.
Maribor's Old Town might not boast dazzling or
overwhelmingly grand sights, but it's a place where you can
truly soak in the European ambiance, from its riverside and squares
to its buildings and narrow alleys.
If you, like me, appreciate the charm of smaller towns,
I highly recommend paying it a visit.
