Are you planning a Spanish adventure? With so many incredible cities to choose from, deciding where to go can be tough.
You might have even stumbled upon online reviews labeling Madrid as 'boring' or suggesting you 'skip it.' But after exploring several major cities and charming towns across Spain, I found myself absolutely captivated by Madrid!
Far from just a tourist trap, Madrid truly offered an authentic glimpse into local life and culture. Plus, there are some fantastic day trip opportunities nearby that are absolutely worth your time.
If you're heading to Madrid in 2026, let me share my top 3 must-do tours that will help you experience the city's true magic!
My number one recommendation is a day trip to the nearby cities of Segovia and Toledo. This tour remains one of my most cherished memories from my entire Spanish journey.
While big cities like Barcelona offer plenty of modern European flair, it's harder to find that deep sense of history and tradition. This tour perfectly filled that gap, offering a rich dive into Spain's storied past!

In Segovia, you can capture breathtaking photos with the stunning Alcázar as your backdrop, or even inside the castle itself. It's truly a fairytale setting!
You'll also marvel at the 2,000-year-old Roman Aqueduct and savor the traditional local delicacy, cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig).

After Segovia, you'll journey to the even smaller, enchanting city of Toledo. The main highlight here is the magnificent Toledo Cathedral. Even if you're not religious, our guide's engaging stories made the history come alive, and I was completely engrossed!
After exploring the cathedral, don't miss trying marzipan, a sweet treat traditionally made by nuns, and soak in the incredible panoramic views from the various viewpoints.
If you only have one day to spare from Madrid, this is the tour I'd pick without hesitation!

My second top pick is a city tour focused on the Royal Palace of Madrid. You simply can't visit Madrid without seeing its magnificent palace, can you?
Once the official residence of the Spanish monarchs, it's now primarily used for state ceremonies and official events.
Boasting over 3,000 rooms, it's actually larger in sheer size than France's Palace of Versailles!
Plus, if you time your visit right, you can witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony, held every Wednesday and Saturday from 11 AM to 2 PM.

While you can certainly explore independently, those with a keen interest in European history will find a guided tour incredibly enriching.
Each room and every intricate sculpture within the palace holds centuries of history and meaning that are often difficult to grasp without an expert guide to illuminate them.

Finally, my third essential Madrid experience is a City Night Tour. Personally, I found Madrid to be absolutely breathtaking after dark.
The buildings glow with soft yellow and purple lights, creating a magical, dreamlike atmosphere. It's one of the most memorable nighttime spots from our honeymoon!

What truly struck me about Madrid was its vibrant energy even at night. Sol Square, in particular, was bustling with people late into the evening – street performers entertaining crowds, locals enjoying tapas and drinks at lively bars.
While the city is lively both day and night, the atmosphere after sunset is distinctly different and utterly captivating!
I felt perfectly safe exploring at night, but if you're a bit hesitant about navigating a new city after dark, a guided night tour is an excellent way to safely enjoy Madrid's stunning nocturnal beauty.

Despite its reputation among some as a 'boring' city, Madrid was anything but for me – it was pure joy!
From its charming city center to incredible day trips nearby, and its authentic local vibe to its dazzling nightlife, Madrid offers so much for travelers who love to immerse themselves in genuine culture.
My partner and I still talk about our wonderful memories from Madrid. We hope you create just as many unforgettable moments on your trip in 2026!
In Segovia, you can see the 2,000-year-old aqueduct and taste the traditional dish, Cochinillo Asado. In Toledo, you can visit the Toledo Cathedral and try marzipan made by nuns.
The Royal Palace of Madrid boasts over 3,000 rooms, making it larger than the Palace of Versailles in France. You can watch the Changing of the Guard every Wednesday and Saturday from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Madrid offers a dreamy night view with buildings illuminated by soft yellow or purple lights. Puerta del Sol, in particular, has a large flow of people late into the night, and you can experience a vibrant atmosphere with street performances and tapas bars.
The author stated that if they could only stay one day in Madrid, they would choose the Segovia & Toledo tour in the surrounding area. This is because the tour allows you to experience European charm, where history and tradition are alive.
