When you embark on a European adventure,
many of you might be eager to discover the charm of pre-medieval times rather than just modern vibes.
If you're traveling to Madrid, the capital of Spain,
there are perfect cities nearby to satisfy exactly this desire.
Those are Segovia and Toledo.
Today, I'll introduce how we managed to visit both of these places in one day,
giving you the itinerary and my review
of the Segovia & Toledo tour!
If I had to describe these two cities in one word,
it would be: 'I would have regretted not going.'
Since Spain was my very first European travel destination,
I really wanted to experience not only the vibrant city atmosphere but also the look of European cities
from the pre-medieval era.
That's when I stumbled upon the Segovia/Toledo tour.
These two cities boast numerous ancient buildings that perfectly capture
the essence of Spain's past, making them ideal for truly soaking in that medieval charm.
As you can see on the map, these cities are located
on opposite sides with Madrid at the center,
which made it challenging to visit both on a short travel itinerary.

Next, I'll share a comprehensive review of the Segovia & Toledo tour!
The tour kicked off with a headcount at the parking lot entrance
in front of the Royal Palace of Madrid.
There were over 30 participants on the tour that day,
and we set off in a large bus.
After about an hour and a half of travel,
we arrived at our first destination in Segovia.
📍 The Alcázar of Segovia is known as one of the castles
that served as a motif for Snow White's castle.
Our first destination was precisely this photo spot
where you can take souvenir photos with the castle as your backdrop.
Viewed from a distance, the castle truly looked like something out of a fairytale,
brimming with medieval European charm, and the clear weather made it feel even more magical.
The colors of the background, in particular, were like a painting, so even a casual photo
turned out like a work of art!
📍 Once we entered Segovia's city center, we moved with the guide to sites including the interior of the Alcázar
and the Aqueduct.
Of course, entering the Alcázar is optional,
so those who don't wish to enter are immediately given free time.
The city walls leading into Segovia's heart,
when we saw them up close, they exuded an even more profound sense of age.
It was quite remarkable how the stones varied in shape from the top to the bottom of the wall,
and it was truly unimaginable that such towering, colossal walls
could have been built in those ancient times.
Wandering through the Alcázar's interior, we soaked in the stories behind each artifact and
architectural style.
The most striking feature for me was the enigmatic patterns etched into the wall in the photo above.
We learned that medieval Spain experienced a fascinating period under Islamic cultural influence.
Since Islamic culture prohibits the depiction of God in human form,
intricate geometric patterns were used instead.
Isn't it fascinating how these original patterns were preserved, while the stained-glass windows behind them feature Catholic imagery?
These nuanced details are often missed when exploring independently, but having a guide who explains
even the smallest intricacies made the experience incredibly engaging and enjoyable.
Beyond its wealth of historical artifacts, the Alcázar's interior also offers
diverse experiences as both an observation deck and a fantastic photo spot.
We managed to capture some truly stunning couple photos, especially at the backlit spot you see in the pictures!
Our guide wasn't just passionate about sharing history; they were genuinely invested in helping us get amazing shots, which made all the difference.
📍 Our final stop in Segovia was the magnificent Aqueduct.
Believed to have been constructed as early as the 1st century AD,
its sheer size was far more awe-inspiring than I had ever imagined!
While photos might not fully capture its grandeur,
if you compare it to the height of a person,
you'll quickly realize it towers well over 20-30 meters (65-100 feet) high!
After our captivating Segovia guided tour,
we were granted about an hour of cherished free time,
perfect for enjoying a delicious lunch.
For lunch, we found a spot with an incredible direct view of the Aqueduct.
It was a restaurant famous for its 📍 traditional 'Cochinillo Asado',
a dish that gained even more fame after being featured on the popular Korean show 'Grandpas Over Flowers'.
If luck is on your side, just like it was for us, you might even get to witness the full spectacle of the whole roasted pig dish, complete with the unique performance of cutting and breaking it with a plate right at your table!
While the food itself was decent, and the service wasn't overtly friendly, I'd still highly recommend it.
It's a place where you can savor both a breathtaking aqueduct view and a taste of traditional cuisine all at once.
After a satisfying lunch, we made our way to our next captivating destination:
Toledo.
📍Toledo's crown jewel, and our main focus, was the magnificent 'Toledo Cathedral'.
We entered its grand interior with our guide, embarking on a tour filled with insightful explanations.
(Just like before, entry is optional.)
While those with a background in religion might already possess some knowledge about cathedrals,
we arrived with completely blank slates, eager to learn!
Our guide meticulously explained each spot, and hearing about the history and religious significance imbued within them made visiting the cathedral a much richer and more fulfilling experience.
After exploring the magnificent cathedral, we headed off to try some Marzipan, famously made by the nuns themselves.
It's crafted from a delightful blend of sugar and almond flour, though I have to admit, it tasted quite a bit like chewing on pure sugar crystals!
While it's definitely worth trying for the experience, I'd say it's probably not something you'd want to order one piece per person – a little goes a long way!
📍 After exploring all the sights, our final stop was a magnificent viewpoint overlooking the entire city of Toledo.
This spot is even more renowned as the backdrop for the wedding photos of beloved Korean celebrities, Lee Bo-young and Ji Sung.
It’s easy to see why they chose this breathtaking location – it was truly stunning just to behold!
After snapping our last commemorative photos here, our incredible tour for the day came to a wonderful close.
So, there you have it! Today, I shared my unforgettable experience on a day trip from Madrid, exploring the enchanting towns of Segovia and Toledo.
