Palacio Real de Madrid
Madrid, often seen as a secondary stop for travelers exploring Spain, holds a special place in my heart.
It offers the charm of a well-organized European city without the overwhelming crowds of Barcelona, providing a more relaxed experience with plenty to see and a robust infrastructure.
While some might suggest skipping Madrid, I believe its attractions are well worth a visit, including the majestic Royal Palace, the serene Retiro Park, the world-renowned Prado Museum, and even the iconic Real Madrid stadium.
Having visited Spain five times, I'm excited to share all my insights. Today, we'll delve into one of Madrid's most iconic landmarks: the Royal Palace.
Getting to the Madrid Royal Palace & Opening Hours
Madrid boasts an excellent public transport system, with both its subway and bus networks being quite efficient. However, the city isn't sprawling, and many major attractions are within reasonable walking distance, making it a fantastic city to explore on foot.

There are bus stops conveniently located near the palace, and the closest subway station is Principe Pio. However, you can also reach it with a pleasant 11-minute walk from the heart of Madrid, Puerta del Sol.
Admission Hours
Monday-Saturday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
During the summer season (April through September), hours are extended by one hour daily.
Booking Your Madrid Royal Palace Tickets
You can purchase your palace tickets through the official website linked below. Just remember to switch the language from Español to English in the top right corner for easier navigation.
While on-site ticket purchases are available, I highly recommend booking online in advance to avoid long queues and save precious travel time!

On the booking screen, you'll need to select your preferences.

Your choices will depend on the **date, time, ticket type, and age**. The most budget-friendly option is the self-guided visit.
For adults, this typically costs **14.77 euros**, while students can enter for **7 euros**.
Entry times are available in 15-minute slots, but be aware that the most affordable tickets might sell out for your chosen date and time.
The 10:00 AM entry slot, in particular, is very popular and tends to sell out quickly. So, as soon as your travel dates are firm, I recommend booking your tickets promptly!
Exploring the Madrid Royal Palace
Among Europe's royal residences, the Palace of Versailles is perhaps the most famous for its sheer scale. However, the Royal Palace of Madrid is equally impressive, boasting over 3,000 rooms, each offering a wealth of sights. (It's said that a former Spanish king wanted a palace reminiscent of Versailles, hence the similar grandeur).

Exploring the opulent interiors of the palace can take quite some time. To truly enrich your experience, I highly recommend opting for an audio guide or joining a guided tour. Learning about the history and significance of each room will make your visit far more engaging.

Just a little tidbit: I've actually visited the Royal Palace three times! Not because it's *that* mind-blowingly exciting (though it is incredible), but simply because I've traveled to Spain with different companions each time.
I've seen it on sunny days and rainy days, and I can confirm that a beautiful, clear day is perfect for capturing stunning photos outside the palace. Spain generally boasts fantastic weather, so dress in your most chic outfits to get those perfect Instagram-worthy shots!

Looking directly across from the Royal Palace's main entrance, you'll spot a beautiful cathedral: the Almudena Cathedral, the royal church.

Note that the entrance directly opposite the palace is for the museum and requires a fee. For free entry into the cathedral itself, walk around to the main street side.
