Palacio Real de Madrid
While some travelers might overlook Madrid in favor of more bustling cities like Barcelona, I've always found a special charm in Spain's capital.
It offers a beautifully organized European cityscape, yet with fewer tourist crowds than its coastal counterpart, making it less hectic and perfectly manageable for exploration. Plus, its infrastructure is top-notch.
Don't let anyone tell you to skip Madrid! Between the majestic Royal Palace, the serene Retiro Park, the world-class Prado Museum, and even the iconic Real Madrid stadium, there's a surprising amount to discover.
Having visited Spain five times, I'm excited to share all my insider tips. Today, let's dive into one of Madrid's most iconic attractions: the Royal Palace.
Getting to Madrid's Royal Palace & Opening Hours
Madrid boasts an excellent public transportation system, with both subway and bus networks making it easy to get around. However, the city center isn't sprawling, and many key attractions are within comfortable walking distance, making it a fantastic city for pedestrians.

You'll find several bus stops conveniently close to the palace. While Príncipe Pío station is the nearest subway stop, you can also enjoy a pleasant stroll of about 11 minutes from the heart of Madrid, Puerta del Sol.
Visiting Hours
Monday - Saturday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
During the summer season (April 1st to September 30th, 2026), hours are extended by one hour daily.
Booking Your Royal Palace Tickets
It's highly recommended to purchase your tickets in advance through the official website to avoid long queues. Simply head to the site and switch the language from Español to English for easier navigation.

When booking online, you'll need to select your desired options:

Ticket prices vary based on the date, time, ticket type, and age group. The most budget-friendly option is typically the self-guided visit.
For adults, a standard self-guided ticket costs around €14.77 (approximately ~$16), while students can enter for about €7 (approximately ~$8).
Entry times are available in 15-minute slots. Be aware that the cheapest tickets, especially for popular 10:00 AM entry, can sell out quickly. It's best to book as soon as your travel dates are firm to secure your preferred time!
Exploring Madrid's Royal Palace
When you think of European palaces, Versailles often comes to mind for its sheer scale and fame. But don't underestimate the Royal Palace of Madrid! It boasts over 3,000 rooms, making it incredibly vast, with a wealth of stunning sights in each chamber. (It's said that a former Spanish king wanted a palace reminiscent of Versailles, hence the similar grandeur).

You'll need a good amount of time to fully appreciate the opulent interiors and intricate details of each room. To truly enrich your experience and understand the historical significance, I highly recommend opting for an audio guide or joining a guided tour.

Just a fun fact: I've actually visited the Royal Palace three times! Not because it's *that* mind-blowingly exciting to see repeatedly, but because I've been fortunate enough to visit Spain with different friends and family members over the years.
I've seen it on sunny days and rainy days, but if you catch it on a clear day, the palace exterior makes for some truly spectacular photos. Spain generally enjoys fantastic weather, so dress in your most vibrant travel outfits for those Instagram-worthy shots!

Facing the main entrance of the Royal Palace, you'll spot a beautiful cathedral: the Almudena Cathedral, the royal church of Madrid.

Be aware that the entrance directly opposite the palace is for the museum and requires a fee. For free entry into the cathedral itself, walk around to the main street side.
