For our final May adventure in Spain, we're heading to the vibrant capital: Madrid!

Today, we'll dive into the magnificent Royal Palace, including how to snag tickets and witness the impressive Changing of the Guard ceremony.

1. Madrid May Weather & Public Holidays

Madrid's May weather isn't drastically different from Barcelona's, but being inland, it experiences much wider daily temperature swings. You might find it a bit chilly when you first step out of your accommodation in the morning.

May 1st is already behind us, but May 15th is San Isidro Day, a public holiday specifically for the city of Madrid. Other Spanish cities do not observe this holiday. Keep in mind that shop opening hours in Madrid might be different on this day, so plan your itinerary accordingly.

2. Madrid May Events & Festivals

1. Fiestas de San Isidro

(San Isidro Festival)

• Dates: May 8–17

• Locations: Pradera de San Isidro, Las Vistillas, Plaza Mayor, Matadero, etc.

• Highlights: The San Isidro Festival is one of Madrid’s major festivals in May.

• Concerts and various events take place throughout the city.

• You can see people dressed in traditional costumes and dancing in different parts of Madrid, making it a very “Madrid” kind of festival.

• The festival itself is quite large, but there don’t seem to be many must-see events for tourists. It may be best to simply enjoy the festive atmosphere while exploring the city.

2. Cambio de Guardia

(Changing of the Royal Guard)

• Date: Every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:00 AM

• Location: Royal Palace of Madrid

• Highlights: The Changing of the Guard is one of the main attractions you can see at a royal palace.

• It takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, with a larger ceremonial changing of the guard held on the first Wednesday of each month (May 6).

• If you’re planning to visit the Royal Palace on a Wednesday or Saturday, it’s worth timing your visit so you can watch the ceremony as well.

A quick check shows that most tickets for May are already sold out.

(However, tickets including a Spanish-guided tour are often still available.)

But don't fret! Many popular travel platforms offer "skip-the-line" tickets for the Royal Palace, and these often have plenty of availability. These priority tickets allow you to bypass the long queues and enter directly.

For reference, an adult ticket on the official website costs 18 Euros (approximately ~$21), so the price difference isn't huge.

Even with these platforms, you'll need to choose from available time slots, so if you plan to visit, I highly recommend purchasing your tickets as soon as possible.

Madrid generally doesn't have as many grand festivals as cities like Barcelona or those in Southern Spain.

However, the city's vibrant atmosphere is a delight in itself. Simply wandering through its charming streets and soaking up the local vibe is a wonderful experience. You could also explore world-class museums like the Prado, visit the Royal Palace, or take a fantastic day trip to nearby historical cities like Toledo and Segovia.
