1. Madrid March Weather and Public Holidays

Madrid's March weather isn't drastically different from Barcelona's. While the forecast might show some rain, it's often subject to change, so it’s always best to check real-time updates closer to your trip.

I've traveled Spain in similar conditions, and I found that even shorts with long sleeves were comfortable during the midday sun. Mornings and evenings can be a bit brisk, but on bright, sunny days, it feels wonderful.

Aside from Mallorca, there are no public holidays across Spain in March.

2. Madrid March Events and Festivals

1. Luz Madrid (Madrid Light Festival)

• Dates: March 12-14 (tentative for 2026), from sunset until around 11 PM

• Location: Various spots across downtown Madrid (Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Prado Museum, etc.)

• Highlights: This isn't a festival where you go to a specific venue; instead, it's an immersive experience where you stroll through the entire city, admiring "light art" installations.

• Expect building facades illuminated with stunning projections and unique sculptures set up in various locations. It's a fantastic way to enjoy Madrid's evening ambiance.

• For example, the Royal Palace often features exterior lighting, while Plaza Mayor might host a special central art piece.

While March can be a quieter month for major festivals in many Spanish cities, Madrid still offers plenty to explore, even if it's less about grand celebrations.

Many travelers often find themselves in Madrid for a day or two due to flight connections, or they extend their stay to enjoy some fantastic day trips. With the pleasant March weather, I highly recommend leisurely strolls through the city center and a visit to Retiro Park.

The Prado Museum and Reina Sofía Museum are wonderful places to spend an afternoon, and the Royal Palace is an absolute must-see.

Alternatively, consider the night tour mentioned above, or dive deeper with a guided tour of the Prado Museum and Royal Palace. For those with more time, a day trip combining Toledo and Segovia is a fantastic way to experience more of Spain's rich history and culture!
