Weather & What to Wear for International Travel in April & May

I can confidently say that April and May are the best months to travel to Madrid.
That's because when I traveled to Spain at this time last year, the warm and clear weather made both the city and its surrounding areas incredibly enjoyable.
Today, I'll be sharing information on Madrid's weather and recommended attire for April and May, as well as must-do day trips and top city attractions.
1. Madrid Weather in April & May: Perfect for Traveling
First, let's look at Madrid's April 2024 weather.
Daytime temperatures climb to the low to mid-20s (Celsius), but nighttime lows can drop below 10 degrees Celsius.
Good weather continues into early May.
During the day, temperatures can reach close to 30 degrees Celsius, making it hot, but evenings are cool to slightly chilly.
For reference, when I visited in early May, days were slightly warm, and nights were chilly.
More important than the temperature is the fact that there was hardly any rain last April and May.
In fact, during my week in Spain, I never had to open the umbrella I brought.
While weather can vary from year to year, based on last year, this was a period with little rain.
2. Recommended Travel Attire
Unlike our country, which is hot and humid, Europe had much lower humidity even when the weather was warm.
So, in April and May, if the sun is out, you might feel generally mild or even hot, but you'll notice it gets considerably colder once evening arrives.
*Note: The sun starts setting after 8 PM.
In April, days are generally cool, so it's good to pack a thicker long-sleeved top and a light outer layer.
From early May, you might start feeling hot, so I recommend short sleeves or thin long sleeves.
However, due to the low humidity, it can suddenly get chilly when you step out of the sun, so bringing a very thin windbreaker will come in handy.

3. Segovia & Toledo Day Trip
What I enjoyed even more than Madrid city itself were the nearby towns of Segovia and Toledo.
I love discovering unique attractions that can't be found anywhere else, and these cities perfectly met that need.
The Aqueduct, built with stacked stones in ancient Roman times,
The Alcázar, which inspired the castle in Snow White,
Cochinillo Asado, a roasted suckling pig dish,
And the Toledo Cathedral, a blend of two architectural styles – there are so many unique attractions you can only find here.
Plus, our guide was so enthusiastic about taking pictures at each sight,
you might even snag some amazing profile-worthy shots!
The tour wraps up at the Toledo viewpoint,
famous as a wedding photoshoot location for celebrities like Lee Bo-young and Ji Sung.
This view was incredibly memorable too!

4. The Prado Museum, One of the World's Top 3 Art Museums
Next up for places to visit in the city is the Prado Museum,
considered one of the world's top 3 art museums.
My friend spent an entire day here, so for art lovers, it's an absolute paradise!
Originally built upon the Spanish royal collections,
it boasts numerous works reflecting royal tastes, alongside masterpieces by Spanish artists
like Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco.
Key masterpieces include Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas, The Garden of Earthly Delights,
and Goya's The Clothed Maja and The Naked Maja.
Just a heads-up, photography is prohibited inside the museum.
The admission fee is €15, which is quite reasonable,
and if you're curious about the detailed backgrounds of the artworks,
booking a museum tour or an audio guide will definitely enrich your experience.

5. Must-Visit Spots in the City Center
Madrid's city center is quite compact, with most attractions
clustered together, making them largely accessible on foot.
First, must-visit spots west of Puerta del Sol include the
Royal Palace of Madrid, the Sabatini Gardens, and
Campo del Moro behind the palace.
I especially recommend visiting Campo del Moro;
it's a picturesque and tranquil garden perfect for a picnic.
The city center also boasts the expansive Puerta del Sol and Plaza de España.
Plaza de España often hosts events, offering plenty to see,
while Puerta del Sol buzzes with life even late at night, giving you a real taste
of Madrid's local atmosphere.
Finally, there's the San Miguel Market in the city center.
More popular with tourists than locals, this market is a vibrant showcase of diverse Spanish delicacies
like tapas, seafood, wine, and jamón.

However, prices can be surprisingly steep!
With a single bite-sized tapa costing over ~$2, I honestly couldn't bring myself to buy them.
In Madrid, nighttime low temperatures in April can drop below 10 degrees Celsius, and even in early May, evenings can be chilly or cool. For April, it's advisable to bring thick long-sleeved tops and a light jacket. For early May, a short-sleeved or light long-sleeved top with a very thin windbreaker is recommended.
