When you think of traveling to Spain,
Barcelona often comes to mind as the most famous destination.
Because of this, you might hear things about the capital city, Madrid, like:
'Madrid is a boring city'
'Let's skip Madrid from our itinerary'
Reviews like these often pop up.
Perhaps because it's a capital city, people might imagine a similar urban vibe,
leading to these kinds of reviews. But in reality,
there are so many places to visit, both in the city center and in its charming surroundings.
And unlike Barcelona, it's a place where you can truly feel the authentic vibe of the locals.
Today, I'm excited to share a way to truly experience Madrid's unique charm with you,
introducing a detailed 2-night, 3-day Madrid itinerary and budget breakdown!
1. Day 1 Itinerary & Expenses
After taking an evening train from Barcelona to Madrid,
our first day in Madrid involved checking into our accommodation and
enjoying a simple dinner at a local tapas bar.
For those flying into Barcelona and heading straight to Madrid,
the arrival times are usually quite similar, so this itinerary could still be a helpful guide.
After arriving at Madrid Atocha station from Barcelona,
we took a taxi to Sol Square, where our accommodation was located.
The taxi fare to the city center was quite affordable, around 10-something euros,
so if you're traveling with two or more people, I highly recommend taking a taxi.
When considering where to stay in Madrid, you might be debating between
Sol Square and Plaza de España. Personally, I'd recommend Sol Square.
Most major attractions are within walking distance,
and there are often performances happening in the square late into the night.
With plenty of people around, it feels quite safe.
I chose to stay at 'Hotel Europa' in Sol Square.
I opted for a Sol Square view with a small additional charge,
and it was wonderful to gaze out at the square even late at night or early in the morning.
Finally, for dinner, we visited
'Pez Tortilla', a Spanish local-style omelet tortilla specialist near Sol Square.
There are many other fantastic and affordable local tapas spots around,
so I recommend ending your first day with some simple tapas.
📌 Day 1 Itinerary/Expense Summary

2. Day 2 Itinerary & Expenses
For our second day, we planned an itinerary centered around a day trip to Madrid's surroundings.
If Madrid itself gives you a taste of a modern capital,
the nearby areas offer a chance to soak in the atmosphere of medieval Europe.
That's why we made sure to include a countryside tour in our Day 2 travel plan.
For breakfast, I highly recommend going local with churros!
There's a popular saying among travelers that you 'must have churros once a day' when in Spain,
and for good reason—there are so many delicious churrerías!
Since most restaurants that open early in the morning are churrerías,
I suggest having breakfast at '1902 Chocolateria & Churros Cafe' or 'Chocolateria San Ginés'
before embarking on your tour.
The Segovia & Toledo tour is a 12-hour day trip,
so it requires dedicating a full day, but it's absolutely worth it!
First, in Segovia during the morning, you'll get to see sights straight out of a fairytale,
such as the 'Alcázar', which inspired Snow White's castle,
the magnificent 'Acueducto' (aqueduct),
and even the famous suckling pig dish, 'Cochinillo Asado'.
You'll genuinely feel like you've stepped into a storybook!
In the afternoon, we'll visit spots where you can truly feel the Middle Ages, including the magnificent 'Toledo Cathedral' with its unique architectural style, the old town's 'Jewish Quarter', and the panoramic 'Toledo Viewpoint'.

After the tour, I recommend catching a glimpse of the sunset near the Royal Palace of Madrid.
Based on May, the sun starts to set after 8 PM, so it was perfect to relax and watch the sunset around the Royal Palace of Madrid after the tour.
For dinner, we'll head back to Puerta del Sol.
You can find hidden gems of restaurants, the 'Kilometer Zero' marker where Spanish roads begin, the 'Bear and the Strawberry Tree Statue' said to grant wishes, and even enjoy street performances by locals.
For dinner, we went to a tapas bar called 'Valdemeso'!
It was a highly satisfying spot where we could enjoy a variety of tapas at an affordable price.

3. Day 3 Itinerary & Expenses
For our last day, we planned an itinerary to explore the city center.
Madrid is a fantastic city for walkers, as you can explore most of the downtown area on foot!
Day three's morning also starts with churros!
It's a great opportunity to try a different churro shop you didn't visit on day two, or I highly recommend 'Maestro Churrero' for its excellent value.
To briefly summarize the city tour itinerary:
We'll explore the left route in the morning, and after lunch, we'll follow the right route.
First, the morning route starts from Puerta del Sol, passing through Plaza de España - Sabatini Gardens and the Royal Palace of Madrid - Campo del Moro - San Miguel Market - and Plaza Mayor, before heading to a 1 Euro taco spot for lunch.
Among these, 'Campo del Moro' is a must-visit, so you can adjust the other locations according to your schedule.
The 1 Euro taco place I visited, 'Takos Al Pastor', is extremely popular with locals, so the wait can be incredibly long!
If you plan to go, I highly recommend getting there right at opening time!
Next up is our afternoon itinerary, exploring the east side of Madrid!
The main attractions are the shopping paradise of Salamanca District,
Retiro Park, and the Prado Museum.
Given the time, it's probably best to choose two out of these three,
depending on your personal preferences.
I took a taxi to the Salamanca District
to browse the luxury boutiques, then walked to Retiro Park
to enjoy the park – that was my route!
Madrid has significantly fewer tourists compared to Barcelona,
making it a much better spot for luxury shopping.
For our final dinner, we headed back to Puerta del Sol.
I tried pasta and paella at a place called 'Ciudad De Tiu,'
but it wasn't a place I'd particularly recommend.
Finally, after completing all our Madrid plans,
I took a taxi to the bus terminal to catch a night bus to our next city.
If you're looking to save on travel time and accommodation costs,
I highly recommend utilizing night buses!
Additionally, for those of you with a keen interest in history or art,
I suggest taking a specialized tour to explore the Royal Palace or the Prado Museum
in more depth.

If you're willing to compromise a little on location, you can find many more affordable options.
