The Ultimate London Travel Itinerary
Must-See Spots & Local Secrets
During my recent trip to the UK, I spent an incredible 9 days exploring nothing but London and its surrounding treasures.
Even with such a generous schedule, there were still places left on my bucket list—proving just how much this historic city has to offer.

Whether you are planning your very first trip or returning to uncover hidden gems, this curated guide will help you craft the perfect adventure.
Let's dive into the absolute best sights in Central London and some unforgettable day trips!
Big Ben & The London Eye

You can't say you've been to London without visiting Big Ben! Since most of the classic landmarks are clustered around Westminster, finding accommodations nearby will save you a ton of travel time.

Right across the River Thames sits the iconic London Eye, offering panoramic views of Parliament and St. Paul's Cathedral.
The ticket lines here get notoriously long. I highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance to skip the queue and maximize your day.

The British Museum

As one of the world's greatest museums, the British Museum houses legendary artifacts, from ancient Egyptian mummies to the Rosetta Stone.

While admission is free, the sheer scale of the museum can be overwhelming. Expect to spend at least 4 hours walking through its endless galleries.
To be honest, wandering around without a guide made it hard to focus on the key highlights, and my feet were exhausted by the end!

Even with a pre-booked entry slot, I still waited in line for nearly 30 minutes just to get through security.
If I could do it over, I would absolutely book a guided tour. Having an expert point out the must-see treasures makes a world of difference.

The National Gallery

Located right on Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is a paradise for art lovers.
It houses masterpieces by Western art giants like Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, and Claude Monet.
Even if you aren't an art history buff, you will easily recognize famous paintings like Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers,' making it a highly rewarding stop.

Because the collection is massive, I recommend checking their map beforehand to pinpoint the exact rooms housing the artworks you want to see.

I chose to explore at my own pace and had a wonderful time, but if you want to understand the deep history behind the brushstrokes, a guided tour is definitely the way to go.
Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace serves as the official residence of the King. Since the interior state rooms weren't open during my visit, I focused on catching the iconic Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Crowds start forming very early in front of the palace gates. If you don't arrive ahead of time, you won't see a thing.
My secret tip? Skip the main gates entirely. Instead, stand along the approach route and watch the guards march past—you will get a much closer view without the claustrophobic crowds.
St. Paul's Cathedral & Westminster Abbey

Famous as the venue for the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, St. Paul's Cathedral is a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture.
While the interior is breathtakingly ornate, the highlight is climbing up to the Golden Gallery at the top of the dome for a sweeping view of London.
Booking your tickets online in advance is cheaper than buying them at the gate, so make sure to plan ahead!

Located steps away from Big Ben, Westminster Abbey is the historic site of British coronations and royal burials.
The gothic architecture is stunning, but keep in mind that photography is strictly prohibited inside.
Just like St. Paul's, booking online saves you both time and money.

Even if you don't visit these major paid cathedrals, stepping into a local neighborhood church is a lovely experience. The quiet, reverent atmosphere is incredibly peaceful.
Warner Bros. Studio Tour London (Harry Potter)

For Harry Potter fans, this is the ultimate pilgrimage. Since it takes a solid half-day to explore (plus travel time from central London), I recommend scheduling this toward the end of your trip.

Stonehenge & Oxford

If you want to venture outside the city, a day trip to Stonehenge—one of the world's greatest mysteries—and the historic university town of Oxford is highly recommended.
Since Stonehenge is difficult to reach via public transit, a guided day tour is by far the easiest and most comfortable option.

Notting Hill & Portobello Road Market

Famous for the romantic comedy Notting Hill, this charming neighborhood is home to the vibrant Portobello Road Market.
The market is liveliest on Saturday mornings, packed with antique treasures, vintage fashion, and incredible street food stalls.
Manchester & Liverpool (For Football Fans)

If you are a passionate sports fan, consider taking a train ride up north to Manchester or Liverpool to catch a live Premier League match. It's an electric experience unlike any other!
