Fare | Around ~$8 (Weekends around ~$6) | Varies by package |

There are two main ways to travel between these two stunning Slovenian destinations:
✅ Taking an intercity bus, or
✅ Opting for an organized day tour.
If you have plenty of time, are traveling on a budget, or are a backpacker, I highly recommend taking the intercity bus. It's cost-effective and allows for maximum flexibility.
However, if your itinerary is packed, you need to see multiple cities in one day, or you're traveling with older family members, a day tour might be the more comfortable and efficient choice.
2. Traveling by Bus (Independent)

When heading from Ljubljana to Bled, the bus is arguably the best way to go. With frequent departures and affordable fares, it's how we made our journey.

Your departure point is the Ljubljana Bus Terminal (Ljubljana AP), conveniently located right in front of the Ljubljana train station, making it super easy to find.
1️⃣
How to Buy Your Ticket

✅ At the Terminal Counter
You can purchase tickets directly at the terminal's ticket office by telling them your destination. You'll receive an open ticket for your desired date, giving you the flexibility to travel at any time.
The downside? There's a ticketing fee! We ended up paying ~$3 for the fee 😭. Also, be aware that it's cash only!

✅ Online Booking
Booking in advance through the official Arriva website will give you much greater peace of mind.
Keep in mind that weekend tickets are often cheaper (this applies to offline purchases too). For the departure location, set it to Ljubljana AP.

✅ Purchase Directly from the Driver
If there are seats available, you can also pay the driver directly in cash when you board the bus.
2️⃣
How to Board the Bus

✅ Where to Board the Bus
Check the platform number indicated on your ticket. At Ljubljana Bus Terminal, buses bound for Bled typically depart from Platforms 7 and 8.
However, since buses for other cities also stop at these platforms, always double-check the destination displayed on the bus's front screen before boarding.

✅ How to Board
When boarding, if you have a paper ticket, the driver will scan the QR code at the bottom of your ticket with a QR reader.
The QR reader looks like a credit card terminal, but it has a camera on the back. That's where you'll present your QR code for scanning.

✅ If You Booked via Mobile
If you booked online, you'll receive your ticket via email and can simply present the QR code on your phone screen. However, some drivers may insist on a paper ticket.
This seems to be a minor hiccup as mobile boarding isn't fully standardized yet.
If this happens, don't be shy! Politely explain, 'I've boarded with a QR code like this before,' and gesture towards the QR reader on the back of their card terminal. They'll usually give it a try and let you on after confirming your ticket. 😂

✅ Drop-off Point
When you get off at the Bled station, you'll be just a short walk from the lake. While Bled is sometimes the final stop, some buses continue to Bohinj, so be sure to check your route and alight at the correct stop.
3. Day Tours

Many visitors to Slovenia often have limited time.
In such cases, it's highly efficient to book a tour package that combines Lake Bled with other nearby attractions like Piran or Postojna Cave, allowing you to maximize your sightseeing.

The main advantages of a day tour are conserving energy with private transport and enjoying insightful commentary from a knowledgeable guide. While we spent a month exploring and took our time with individual day trips, I would definitely recommend a tour if your schedule is tight!
Especially if you're traveling with older family members? A tour is an absolute must-recommend.

Transportation costs in Slovenia aren't particularly cheap, and inter-city travel isn't always the most convenient. So, if you plan to visit multiple destinations, a tour will be much more comfortable and efficient.

4. Bled Visit Tips

✅ High Season Alert
Starting in June 2026, the tourist season picks up significantly. If you're planning to take the bus on a weekend, it's safer to book your tickets in advance.

✅ Bled Castle
If you want to take in panoramic views of the lake, a visit to Bled Castle is highly recommended. However, admission is a bit steep at ~$21.
There are also some fantastic free viewpoints around the lake, which I'll share in a future post!

✅ Pletna Boat
To reach Bled Island, home to the iconic church, you'll need to take a 'Pletna' boat, a traditional wooden gondola.
This experience also comes with a price tag (around ~$22), but given the size of the lake and the effort of the oarsman, it feels well worth it. You'll need to pay in cash on-site.
Beyond the Pletna, you can also choose from rowboats or electric boats if you prefer.
Please note that the entrance fee for the church on Bled Island (~$13) is separate from the boat fare.
5. Conclusion

Getting from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is much simpler and more convenient than you might think.
Whether you choose to soak in the local atmosphere by taking a bus or opt for a comprehensive day tour to make the most of your time, you're in for a treat.
With its emerald waters and delicious cream cake, Bled promises unforgettable memories. I hope this guide helps you plan your perfect trip!
