Ljubljana's Public Bike-Share
ⓒ Written & Photographed by Nomad Ssalmi
Can you ride a shared bike for a whole week, completely unlimited,
for just €1?
Even though Ljubljana is Slovenia's capital city,
it's actually quite compact and charming.
This means you can easily get almost anywhere
on two wheels!
During my month-long stay in Slovenia,
I've been absolutely loving and constantly using
the BicikeLJ bike-sharing system.
Let me share how it works.

1. BicikeLJ Basics

Quick Facts | |
Name | BicikeLJ |
Subscription Plans | Weekly / Yearly Pass |
Operating Hours | 24/7 |
App | BicikeLJ (Available on both Android & iOS) |
Website |
BicikeLJ is a massive bike-share network
with over 80 stations spread across Ljubljana.
It is a highly convenient bike-sharing system.
Since you can rent and return bikes 24/7,
it's incredibly popular not just with travelers,
but with locals too!
2. Pricing & Plans
1️⃣
Subscription Fee

BicikeLJ pricing is split into
two parts: the subscription (pass) fee and the usage time fee.
Let me break down the subscription fee first!

Since I'm living here for a month,
I purchased the 1-year pass.
It costs just €3 for unlimited rides—
isn't that incredibly cheap?
Since a single city bus ticket is €1.50,
you can ride a bike for a whole year
for the cost of just one round-trip bus ride!
Talk about ultimate value!
The weekly pass is also only €1,
making it incredibly budget-friendly
for short-term travelers.
2️⃣
Usage Fees (by Time)

This fee is based on continuous use
from the moment you rent the bike,
and it applies equally to all passes.
✅ 1st Hour (0–60 mins)
FREE
✅ 2nd Hour (61–120 mins)
€1
✅ 3rd Hour (121–180 mins)
€2
✅ Every hour after that
€4
✅ A Pro Tip for Free Rides Forever!
Since the city center is so compact,
you can reach most places within 20 minutes.
If you return your bike to any nearby station
before your 60 minutes are up,
and then rent a bike again right away, the timer resets!
This means you can ride all day—or for your entire trip—
without spending a single extra cent (€0 surcharge).
3. How to Rent & Return
1️⃣
Registration & Purchasing a Pass

Renting a bike is super easy as long as you have the app.
Of course, you'll need to sign up and purchase your pass first
to unlock the bikes, so...
Please make sure to sign up and complete your purchase before renting!

For the most seamless experience,
it's highly recommended to download the app.
Everything is done directly through the app!
2️⃣
Renting Your Bike

First, open the map
to find a nearby bike station.
The number of available bikes updates in real-time.
In crowded, popular areas,
they can disappear in the blink of an eye,
so it's a good idea to monitor the count as you head over.

Once you arrive at a station,
check out the bike list in the app.
Other users leave star ratings,
which helps you choose the best ride.

Alternatively, you can inspect them yourself
and pick the one that
looks the newest!

If you look at the seat height adjustment mechanism,
you'll notice there are two different types.
The seat shown in the second photo felt much newer.
I always hunt for the newer ones! 🤣

Once you've spotted your perfect bike,
stand right in front of it and
find that specific bike in the list.
Give it a swipe to the left or right.
Then, the Release button
will magically pop up!
Just tap that button.

Next, make sure the button on the bike dock
lights up green.
Press the button,
and the lock will release with a click!
Your rental time starts ticking from this moment.

After adjusting the seat height and checking the handlebars,
you're ready to roll!
Just a quick heads-up:
there is only one brake lever on the left handlebar,
so keep that in mind.
3️⃣
Returning Your Bike
Find a dock at a station near your destination
and push the bike firmly into it.

Make sure this specific part aligns correctly
to slot right in.
You must hear a "beep" to confirm the return,
so make sure it's locked in securely until you hear that sound!

After the beep,
your ride summary and rating page
will pop up on your app.
If this doesn't appear,
your return wasn't processed correctly.
Please double-check your app!
If it isn't docked properly,
your rental time will keep running,
and you might end up with an unexpected bill.
4. Quick Tips for Your Ride

Ljubljana has an incredibly
well-structured cycling infrastructure.
Be sure to follow local cycling etiquette
for a safe and wonderful ride!

✅ Spotting the Right Lanes
On major roads,
the dedicated bike lanes and pedestrian sidewalks
are very clearly separated.
Please be careful not to
ride on the pedestrian walkways!

✅ Keep to the Right
Most bicycle paths
are one-way lanes where you are expected
to ride on the right side.
The lane for the opposite direction is often located
on the other side of the street,
so make sure to check the traffic direction before hopping on.

Sometimes you'll encounter two-way lanes,
and while not everyone follows the rules perfectly,
most people move in the designated direction.
For your safety, it's always best to follow the flow!

✅ Canceling Your Subscription
Once your trip is over,
don't forget to cancel your subscription in the app!
In the app:

Deactivate
Make sure to follow these steps to cancel successfully.
5. Wrapping Up

If you're only visiting Ljubljana for a short time,
getting a Ljubljana Card to enjoy
unlimited bus rides is a great option.
However, riding a bike to soak in Ljubljana's gorgeous nature
and crisp, clean air will make for
an absolutely unforgettable travel experience.

Super affordable and convenient,
Ljubljana's bike-sharing system, BicikeLJ,
is a must-try if you have an upcoming trip!
I highly recommend giving it a go.
I hope this guide helps you have
the most incredible and joyful journey.

The subscription fee for BicikeLJ is 1 Euro for a week and 3 Euros for a year. The first hour of rental is free, the second hour is 1 Euro, the third hour is 2 Euros, and every hour after that is 4 Euros.
If you return the bike to a nearby station before 60 minutes have passed and rent it again immediately, the usage time will be reset. By using this method, you can ride the bike without any additional charges during your subscription period.
Swipe the selected bike item in the app and click the Release button. Then, when the button on the bike dock turns green, press it to unlock the bike and start your rental.
A physical return is complete only when you hear a beep sound after pushing the bike into the dock. Afterwards, you must check if the usage history and rating page appear normally on the app screen to prevent any additional charges.
Bike lanes and sidewalks are separated, so you must be careful not to encroach on pedestrian paths. Additionally, most bike lanes are one-way based on right-hand traffic, so you should check the direction of travel before entering.
