Exploring Livraria Lello in Porto
Your Guide to Booking Tickets & Avoiding the Crowds
When planning my trip to Porto, Portugal, I didn't have a long list of must-dos. But as a huge Harry Potter fan, there was one place I absolutely couldn't miss: Livraria Lello. A bookstore you have to pay to enter? It sounds unusual, but for this literary gem, it's a small price to pay.
I'll walk you through the simple booking process and share my personal experience, especially from a Harry Potter enthusiast's perspective.

1. How to Book Tickets for Livraria Lello
📍 Livraria Lello
R. das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto, Portugal
Operating Hours | 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM |
Holidays | None |

Booking your ticket in advance is absolutely essential to visit this iconic bookstore. It's a straightforward process on their official website:

Once on the website, you'll see several options. The one you'll want is the "ticket-voucher Livraria Lello," which currently costs ~$17 USD (approximately 15.95 Euros).

Next, select your desired date and time slot. You'll notice a helpful tip on the site itself: "It's best to come early in the morning or late in the evening!" After choosing your time and the number of visitors, you're almost done.
You'll have about 15 minutes to fill in your personal details (only the starred fields are required) and complete the payment. It's a quick process.
Once your payment is confirmed, your ticket will be sent to the email address you provided, so double-check it for accuracy!
2. Waiting to Enter Livraria Lello
After navigating Porto's charming, often hilly streets, I joined the queue for Livraria Lello.

I opted for a 7:00 PM entry. Keep in mind that 7:00 PM entry is typically only available during the summer months. During other seasons, the last entry is usually around 5:30 PM.
Finding the queue is generally easy once you're near the bookstore. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to ask fellow visitors or one of the many staff members who are usually present to guide visitors.

When your time slot arrives, staff will check your tickets and allow entry in an orderly fashion.
I spent a lot of time debating which entry time to choose. If you're visiting during peak season, aiming for the opening time is your best bet for experiencing the bookstore with fewer crowds.
My top recommendation for entry is 9:00 AM, right when they open. Start your day in Porto with this magical experience!
Due to my schedule, I couldn't make it for opening and chose one of the last slots. While still beautiful, it was incredibly crowded.
3. My Livraria Lello Experience

Stepping inside, you instantly understand why Livraria Lello is often called one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. It truly is stunning and magnificent! However, as you can see from my photos, it was absolutely packed with people.
As a massive Harry Potter fan, visiting this place was a non-negotiable part of my itinerary. Yet, perhaps because I'd seen so many images and videos online, and coupled with the sheer number of visitors, the actual experience felt a little less magical than I'd imagined. I decided to simply appreciate the significance of being in a place connected to the wizarding world.

Occasionally, people will politely make way for you to snap a photo. I noticed this spot where visitors were taking turns, so I waited for my chance and captured a precious shot!

Beyond the intricate carvings beneath the famous staircase, the stained-glass ceiling is truly breathtaking. The colors are exactly my style!
Despite my earlier sentiment that the experience was "just okay," I clearly took a lot of photos. It really is that beautiful.

Looking down from the upper level, you can see just how many people fill the space. Even during one of the last entry slots, it was bustling. Seriously, try to go at opening!

Here's another beautiful photo spot. I think I actually preferred the photos from here more than from the main staircase!

There's a dedicated section for the Harry Potter series. Personally, I was more captivated by the Sorting Hat display on the shelf above the books!
You'll also find a special edition of The Little Prince by Livraria Lello in a dedicated corner. Many visitors seem to purchase this edition, alongside a few other souvenirs. I left empty-handed this time.
Porto doesn't boast an overwhelming number of major attractions, making Livraria Lello a definite highlight. Unless your itinerary is extremely tight, it's certainly worth adding to your travel plans for a unique cultural experience.
