The Rossio Square market, bathed in festive Christmas lights,

and the Santa Justa Lift, offering breathtaking panoramic night views,

create the perfect Lisbon itinerary for a December adventure.

I specifically planned my route to explore

Rossio Square's Christmas market and

the Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa), a renowned spot for night views,

as they are truly the highlights of a December trip to Lisbon.

Lisbon in December - What to Wear & Weather

Compared to Eastern or Northern Europe,

Portugal's Lisbon boasts relatively mild December weather,

making it a top choice for a charming winter European getaway.

🌡️ Average Lisbon Temperatures

Daytime High: 14-16℃

Nighttime Low: 8-10℃

During the day, you'll enjoy pleasant weather around 15 degrees Celsius,

and as night falls, the entire city transforms with dazzling

festive string lights.

When I visited in early to mid-December,

locals were dressed in

puffer jackets or windbreakers,

while tourists wore a real variety.

I even saw some in short sleeves! 😯

Personally, I wore a sweater with a light puffer jacket,

and the weather was perfectly comfortable for it.

It gets chilly at night, so a thin scarf or shawl is also recommended.

Lisbon in December - Rossio Square & City Center Christmas Vibes

The streets around Rossio Square

absolutely exude Christmas vibes!

From mid-to-late November until the end of December, Rossio Square

transforms into a magnificent Christmas village.

The dazzling lights enveloping the entire square and

the huge Christmas tree are truly captivating.

Even quick snaps look like they're straight out of a fairy tale! 🥰

Even St. George's Castle, visible in the distance, looked absolutely beautiful.

Rossio Square is adorned with

giant Santa Claus figures and various lights.

The square itself is spacious, making it easy and comfortable to explore.

Around the landmark statue in Rossio Square,

markets are lined up, creating a lively atmosphere.

As you stroll through the streets, you'll find plenty of other nearby markets too,

offering a feast for the eyes and so much to explore.

You can truly soak in the authentic Christmas spirit! 👍

While I didn't get a chance to try them, recommended foods include:

Mulled Wine (Vin Chaud) / Bacalhau Croquettes / Roasted Chestnuts

You can fully immerse yourself in the December Christmas atmosphere

all over Lisbon's city center.

Perhaps that's why there were so many people around!

Seeing families and friends out and about,

all enjoying themselves, just makes you happy! 😊

Lisbon in December - Santa Justa Lift

Designed by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, who built the Eiffel Tower,

the Santa Justa Lift

This historic vertical elevator connects Lisbon's high and low districts.

On December nights, the lift itself is softly lit,

making its exterior look absolutely fantastic.

The elevator price is 6 euros.

However, if you have a Lisboa Card, it's free!!

The Lisboa Card, one of the essential items for a trip to Lisbon,

is cheaper if you get it in advance ⭐

With a Lisboa Card in hand,

not riding it would be a loss, right? (?) 🤣

I visited when the night view was at its best, and while there was a queue,

it wasn't too long, so I waited and hopped on.

You enter the area shown in the left photo to board.

📌Tip

If the boarding queue at the bottom of the lift is too long,

you can walk up towards Carmo Convent (Convento do Carmo) hill

and enter directly via the upper walkway

to see the city's night view without waiting.

Stepping inside the elevator, you're greeted by well-preserved antique

wooden interiors and brass decorations,

making you feel like you've time-traveled to 19th-century Europe.

Just tap your card to board, like getting on a bus.

(For the Lisboa Card, you simply show it.)

Perhaps because it's not super tall,

the lift ascends surprisingly quickly!

Once you step off the lift, you can see São Jorge Castle in the distance

and enjoy panoramic views of Lisbon's city center.

Walk out a bit, and you'll find a separate, topmost observation deck

you can climb to from the walkway.

(You can see Rossio Square, Baixa Street, and São Jorge Castle from there!)

Keep in mind there's an additional fee for the very top observation deck!

As I walked back down towards the city,

it was wonderful to fully soak in the sights of Lisbon.

During the December season, the Christmas luminaria lights

across the entire street, combined with São Jorge Castle's illumination,

create a stunning display, so you definitely have to go at least once!
