1. Breakfast Kyoto Ogawa Shoyaku
(Breakfast Kyoto ogawasyouyaku)
✅ Hours: Weekdays 08:00 AM - 1:30 PM / Weekends 07:30 AM - 3:00 PM
✅ Tabelog Reservations Available ⭕, Unlimited Refills on 5 Types of Healthy Herbal Teas
📍 Breakfast Kyoto Ogawa Shoyaku Restaurant
2F, 272 Nijoaburanokojicho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-0051, Japan

After a peaceful morning stroll through Kyoto, we arrived at
'Breakfast Kyoto Ogawa Shoyaku.'
This place is incredibly famous as both a breakfast hot spot
and a tofu hot pot course restaurant.

We visited on a Saturday at 9:30 AM
after making a reservation in advance through Tabelog,
and enjoyed their signature course menu for 3,800 JPY (approx. $23) per person.
The restaurant features a long, sleek counter bar layout,
but there are also 4-seater tables further inside,
making it a great spot for families as well.

It was almost fully booked when we arrived,
so a reservation is absolutely essential if you plan to visit on the weekend!
Once seated, they provide a detailed menu explaining the course,
along with a guide to the various specialty salts and sauces on the table.
It was so much fun reading through them
and trying them one by one during our meal.

A Clean and Clean-Tasting Course Meal
The 3,800 JPY (Approx. $23) Course Menu
✔️ Welcome Tea (Japanese Organic Mulberry Leaf Tea)
✔️ Domestic Barley Granola (Additive-free)
✔️ Tofu, Okinawa Pork & Vegetable Shabu-Shabu
✔️ Choice of White Rice or Black Rice
✔️ 7-Type Side Dishes (Fried Tofu, Yuba Roll, Tuna, etc.)
✔️ Yuzu Handa Somen Noodles
✔️ Dessert (Matcha Gelato)

Overall, the dishes were wonderfully light and low in sodium.
After eating a lot of heavily seasoned food in Osaka,
this clean, wholesome meal was incredibly healing for my husband and me.
Tofu + Okinawa Pork + Vegetable Shabu-Shabu

This light and flavorful tofu, pork, and vegetable
shabu-shabu was absolutely wonderful! 💙
Having a warm, comforting broth in the morning
really soothed our stomachs and got us ready for the day.

Along with the meal, you can enjoy unlimited pours
of 5 different types of healthy herbal teas,
savoring the rich aromas throughout our dining experience.
(It was a tiny bit disappointing that
only one tea could be served iced! ㅠㅠ)
From our seats, we could see the lush greenery outside
and little sparrows playing peacefully in the garden,
making it the perfect way to soak in a quiet Kyoto morning.
7 Side Dishes (Fried Tofu, Yuba Roll, Tuna, Dango, Soft-boiled Egg, Eel, Stir-fried Anchovy & Vegetables)

The 7 side dishes were
an absolute feast for the eyes! The plating was so gorgeous,
it almost felt like a crime to eat them ㅠㅠ👍
I paired mine with black rice.
Each dish felt clean and beautifully prepared
with a wonderful variety of ingredients!

You can also order extra items outside of the course,
so we added a Japanese rolled omelet (Tamagoyaki)
for 580 yen (tax included), since we hadn't had one yet!

It came out as four thick, generous slices,
so my husband and I happily shared two pieces each.
It was incredibly fluffy and absolutely delicious!
Yuzu Somen Noodles and Matcha Gelato

We were already stuffed, but how could we resist noodles!
It felt like thin udon noodles,
and the touch of refreshing yuzu made it the perfect
light palate cleanser to wrap up the meal.
And finally, the dessert that wrapped up the course—
matcha gelato!
It was a cold, sweet, and delightful treat.
(Honestly, feels like Kyoto has matcha in absolutely everything! lol)

On the first floor, they sell the various teas
we enjoyed during our meal, so keep this in mind
as a great spot to pick up some Kyoto souvenirs!

While walking after our meal, we stumbled upon a Pikachu vending machine.
Even the vending machines are Pikachu...
Japan's love for Pokémon truly knows no bounds! 💛
2. Ginkaku-ji (Temple of the Silver Pavilion)
✅ Hours: Daily 08:30 - 17:00
✅ Admission: Adults 1,000 yen / Children 500 yen
📍 Ginkaku-ji
2 Ginkakujichō, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, 606-8402, Japan

After fueling up with a hearty breakfast, our next stop was
Ginkaku-ji, the famous UNESCO World Heritage site.

I chose this place because I heard it was less crowded
and more relaxing to explore than the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji).
But as soon as we reached the entrance, we saw tons of
students on school field trips! It gave me a cozy, familiar feeling—
kind of like visiting Gyeongju, Korea's classic school trip destination. haha 😆

Since the interior of the temple is closed to the public,
we spent our time exploring the beautifully manicured gardens.

The traditional Japanese dry garden, with its sand meticulously
raked into perfect waves, was absolutely fascinating!
I found myself strolling peacefully while letting my imagination wander—
wondering if the rain or snow ever washes the patterns away.

As you follow the designated viewing path,
you'll come across some stone steps leading up the hill.

Once you reach the top, the entire village of Kyoto
opens up before your eyes—it’s incredibly refreshing!
I couldn’t stop marveling at the towering, straight trees
and the lush green moss that felt like it had been there for centuries.

When we visited in May, it was warm but thankfully mosquito-free.
However, because the terrain is quite damp and humid,
mosquito repellent is an absolute must-have
if you’re planning a trip during the peak of summer!
3. Strolling Along the Philosopher's Path
📍 Philosopher's Path (Tetsugaku-no-Michi)
Tetsugaku No Michi, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan

As you exit Ginkaku-ji, the path naturally
leads you right onto the 'Philosopher's Path' walking trail.
While there aren't any massive, flashy landmarks,
it's the perfect scenic route to peacefully stroll through and
soak in those classic, nostalgic Japanese neighborhood vibes.

I saw a sign explaining the history of the path,
but I just gave it a quick "Ah, cool..."
and walked right past... haha 😆

There were so many fish swimming in the canal along the path,
and we even spotted a cute little duck family!
Honestly, I find myself drawn so much more to these simple,
natural moments. It was the perfect spot to just chat away
with my husband as we wandered.

If you walk a bit further, you'll spot
'Sunshine Juice,' a fresh fruit juice cafe with great Google reviews.
If you're in need of a quick, refreshing drink boost
while walking, definitely pop in!
4. Sushi Ishimatsu (A Local Gem for Sushi)
✅ Hours: Fri–Tue 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed Wed & Thu)
✅Nigiri Sushi (2,300 Yen)/Premium Nigiri (3,800 Yen)/Chirashi Sushi (2,500 Yen)
📍 Sushi Ishimatsu
36 Shishigatani Hōnenin Nishimachi, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, 606-8427 Japan

From Ginkaku-ji Temple to the Philosopher's Path,
the real reason we walked so much to work up an appetite...
was to visit this amazing local Kyoto sushi spot,
'Sushi Ishimatsu'! 😊
It's a cozy, charming neighborhood sushi joint
where the cheerful owner-chef grandfather is the absolute star of the show.

We got super lucky during lunch!
We just walked in and managed to grab
the very last open table!
Everyone who arrived right after us had to wait...
Talk about a lucky couple! 🍀
We ordered the Nigiri Sushi and the Premium Nigiri,
and he interestingly asked us first
if we wanted him to slice the sushi pieces in half.
He totally gets the minds of travelers
who want to share and try different flavors! So thoughtful. 💕
Nigiri Sushi 2,300 Yen

Right after ordering, our beautifully crafted sushi arrived.
The sweet grandfather surprised us by explaining
each cut of fish with a seamless mix
of English and Korean!

Later, we saw him effortlessly chatting
with a French guest. Major respect! 👍
I wonder how many languages he actually speaks!
Premium Nigiri 3,800 Yen

The salmon roe, fatty tuna, and sea urchin (uni) sushi
literally melted in our mouths the moment we took a bite.
But above all, this place is a total 'wasabi hotspot'!

If he asks you if you want wasabi,
you MUST say yes!
It had this incredible sweet yet spicy kick, almost like it was aged with a secret sauce.
We were so hooked, we were practically
drenching our sushi in it!
He kept joking around and sent us off with a warm, cheerful goodbye.
His beautiful energy truly doubled the joy
of our Kyoto trip.

From a peaceful, refreshing morning in Kyoto
to a relaxing garden stroll and finally
the sushi of a lifetime—it was a perfect day.
If you're planning a trip to Kyoto,
I highly recommend following this exact itinerary
to make unforgettable, happy memories!
I'll see you in the next Kyoto travel log. Bye! 💚
