I knew Kyoto held that unique, traditional Japanese charm that draws so many visitors, but I was truly surprised by just how popular it is! On the day of my tour, our group totaled 47 people. We had two buses and two excellent guides to lead us.

Boarding began promptly at 8:40 AM. We gathered beforehand and boarded in the order of arrival.

This was an Osaka bus tour heading to Kyoto. (I opted for the Korean-speaking guide, but English/Japanese guided tours are also available.) Our guide was clear: don't just try to remember meeting times, write them down! He warned that once you're exploring, it's easy to forget. He even joked that if you were late, you'd have to take a taxi to the next spot – a tough but memorable way to make sure everyone stayed on schedule!

1. Arashiyama

Our first stop on the Kyoto bus tour was Arashiyama, famous for its Bamboo Grove (Chikurin). Historically, it was a retreat for aristocrats, and its Togetsukyo Bridge and charming shopping streets are well-known.

We spent about 170 minutes here, allowing plenty of time for lunch and free exploration. The guide even provided a map with recommended local eateries.

For those interested, the guide offered to take professional-quality photos with a DSLR against the stunning backdrops – perfect for capturing those 'once-in-a-lifetime' shots!

The photos came out beautifully, especially if you visit during cherry blossom season, which truly enhances the scenery. There was one primary spot for photos, but other picturesque locations were also highlighted.

The bamboo forest is, of course, a highlight, but every shop and alleyway offered something delightful. It's a truly captivating area.

I chose to follow our guide's recommendation and took a leisurely stroll through the park's walking paths, soaking in the serene atmosphere and enjoying a rare moment of peace.

2. Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)

I'd been to Kinkaku-ji before, and while it's undeniably golden, it doesn't sparkle quite as much as one might imagine, so I wasn't entirely awestruck this time. Nevertheless, it remains an essential stop on any Kyoto bus tour itinerary.

We spent approximately 50 minutes exploring the grounds here.

3. Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Also known as the Pure Water Temple, Kiyomizu-dera boasts beautiful shopping streets and numerous tranquil, old-world alleys. To see everything, you'll need to move at a brisk pace!

From the main hall, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, which is absolutely breathtaking.

Below, you'll find the Otowa Waterfall. Its three streams are said to grant health, wisdom, and love, though no one knows which stream corresponds to which blessing. Legend has it that drinking from all three will invite bad luck, so it's best to choose only two!

This kind of fascinating background information and engaging anecdotes were a huge advantage of this Osaka bus tour. If you choose the wrong tour, you might end up with no useful insights and just be subjected to souvenir sales pitches.

While I often enjoy local tours, a downside can be the lack of detailed explanations. Even if English is offered, it's often brief, and the main commentary is usually in the local language. Being able to understand these rich historical and cultural contexts from a Korean-speaking guide was definitely a major plus for this Kyoto bus tour.

4. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine

This shrine is famously known as the Fox Shrine because of the numerous fox statues scattered throughout its grounds.

However, Fushimi Inari is actually dedicated to the god of rice and sake, and the foxes serve as his messengers or guardians.

If you look closely, you'll see that many of the fox statues hold a sheaf of rice or a key in their mouths, symbolizing their role.

Did you know there are approximately 55,000 convenience stores across Japan, but a staggering 88,000 officially recognized shrines? (And if you count unofficial ones, it could be up to 300,000!) That's roughly one shrine within a 1.2-mile radius of every household. Fushimi Inari-taisha is one of the most prominent, arguably the most famous shrine in all of Japan.

This shrine is particularly famous for its seemingly endless rows of vermilion torii gates, donated by individuals and businesses. The names of the donors are often inscribed on the back of each gate.

The path continues far up the mountain – it's practically a hiking trail! Most visitors only walk through a section, as reaching the very top is quite an endeavor.

After exploring Fushimi Inari, the Osaka bus tour concludes, and we began our journey back. You can also opt to get off in the Umeda area if it's more convenient.

Even though I've condensed my experience here, we truly saw and explored so much. The flexibility of the tour was fantastic!
