I've visited Kyoto quite a few times.
But this was my husband's very first time visiting!
So, planning a couples' trip just for the two of us,
I wanted us to comfortably visit
all the must-see Kyoto spots on a day trip—
from Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera
to the gorgeous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
That's why I booked a Kyoto one-day bus tour!
With an incredibly friendly and helpful guide,
we got to explore Kyoto to our hearts' content.
Let me share how to book this Kyoto bus tour
and give you a peek at our wonderful itinerary.
1. Booking the Kyoto Bus Tour from Osaka
First, when putting together my Kyoto wishlist,
I chose to skip Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) since I've been there multiple times.
Instead, I looked for an Osaka-departure bus tour
that included Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion),
which is a hidden gem famous for its beautiful walking paths.
I found a few options online.
After comparing them carefully,
I went with Indigo Travel's package. It offered a great pace:
Fushimi Inari Shrine (approx. 70 mins) -
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest (approx. 2 hours 40 mins) -
Ginkaku-ji (approx. 40 mins) -
Kiyomizu-dera (approx. 1 hour 20 mins)

felt comfortably paced, which made me super excited.
What's included in the tour:
A professional guide, round-trip transportation,
and audio receiver rental fees.
What's not included:
Personal expenses, lunch at the Bamboo Forest,
Ginkaku-ji admission fee (1,000 yen per adult),
and Kiyomizu-dera admission fee (500 yen per adult).
We met up early in the morning at Dotonbori to set off.
Since this is the main meeting hub for Osaka bus tours,
it was incredibly busy with travelers and tour buses from early on.
Luckily, our guide was holding up a highly visible company flag,
making it super easy to spot them, check our names on the list, and hop on the bus.
2. Exploring the Fox Shrine and the Bamboo Forest
The very first stop on our
Kyoto day bus tour was
Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous as the "Fox Shrine."
Right from the entrance, a lively commercial street
greeted us with souvenir shops and street food stalls
packed closely together.
Since this shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates,
my expectations were sky-high.
Walking through these tunnel-like gates alongside fellow travelers,
I was instantly captivated by the magical atmosphere.
But I also learned a slightly spooky fact: these red torii gates are donated
by individuals and businesses, and if they stop paying their maintenance dues,
the gates are ruthlessly taken down! That added a slightly chilling vibe to the beauty.
Each of these red torii gates has the name of its donor
or donating company carefully inscribed on it.
The deity enshrined at Fushimi Inari is 'Inari Okami,'
and the messengers who deliver Inari's will are said to be
foxes, which is why you’ll spot so many fox statues all over the place!
Using the fun poses our guide recommended,
we managed to snap a bunch of playful and memorable photos.
The second stop on our bus tour was
Arashiyama, famous for its iconic bamboo groves!
We were given about 2 hours and 40 minutes of free time here, including lunch,
which felt quite generous and relaxed.
Since I had visited around this time last year as well,
I started from the famous Togetsukyo Bridge—a super popular spot where people grab a cup of % Arabica coffee and soak in the views—
to Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site
renowned for its stunning gardens,
and the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove,
where you can stroll among towering stalks that stretch up to the sky.
There was so much to see!
Since Arashiyama is a must-visit destination in Kyoto, it gets incredibly crowded, and restaurants usually have long lines.
But our guide compiled a fantastic list
of recommended local eateries for anyone wanting a proper sit-down lunch.
They even helped make reservations over the phone,
making it super easy to grab a great meal
despite the crowds.
My husband and I decided to grab a quick bite of Wagyu beef skewers for lunch
so we could spend more time exploring. But when we headed back to the meeting point,
our guide took amazing photos of us with both a DSLR and a phone using the beautiful Togetsukyo riverbank as our backdrop!
It was such a sweet gesture,
leaving us with some truly beautiful, treasured memories.
3. Ginkaku-ji & Kiyomizu-dera Itinerary
Our third destination was Ginkaku-ji (the Temple of the Silver Pavilion).
Ginkaku-ji is a temple that epitomizes Japan's Muromachi period,
built by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa.
Highly regarded as a culturally influential figure,
he devoted his post-retirement life to art and culture.
His retirement villa is what we know today as Ginkaku-ji.
Since Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) is covered in gold,
I wondered if Ginkaku-ji would be covered in silver.
But unlike its golden counterpart, Ginkaku-ji isn't flashy at all.
Instead, it embraces a beautiful, understated elegance.
Personally, I actually preferred it to Kinkaku-ji
because of its gorgeous, peaceful walking paths.
If you walk up a little further, you'll reach an observation point
where the view is absolutely breathtaking and incredibly healing.
Near the bus stop, you'll find the Philosopher’s Path,
a perfect spot to take a slow, contemplative stroll
and just soak in the peaceful vibes.
I initially worried that 40 minutes would be too short,
but the grounds were compact enough to explore quickly,
leaving us plenty of time to browse the souvenir shops
and even grab a to-go drink from a local cafe.
Our final stop was the absolute heart of any Kyoto trip:
Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
Also known as Kiyomizu-dera, it's not only a landmark of Kyoto
but also one of Japan’s most iconic Buddhist heritage sites.
Since this massive wooden structure was built entirely without nails,
it was unfortunately destroyed by fire multiple times.
The majestic temple you see today
was reconstructed back in 1633.
The absolute highlight is the Main Hall, a massive wooden structure
built right on the edge of a cliff.
If you have the time and energy, I highly recommend paying the admission fee
to walk all the way in and step onto the spacious wooden terrace
known as the "Stage of Kiyomizu."
As you walk all the way down, you'll also come across the Otowa Waterfall...
You'll find these three streams of water.
Each of them represents
academic success, love, and health.
It's said that you should choose only one to drink from,
which is probably why
so many travelers and tourists
were eagerly waiting in line!
To fully soak in the historic vibes,
we explored the classic Kyoto itinerary
including Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka,
wandering around and treating ourselves to some delicious snacks.
4. Wrapping Up the Kyoto Bus Tour
This day-trip bus tour starting from Osaka
was the perfect choice. Traveling with my husband without any transportation hassle,
we got to see all the must-visit highlights,
and I couldn't help but pat myself on the back for booking it!
It was an even more meaningful day trip because I was with my husband—
visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine,
the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove,
Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), and Kiyomizu-dera.

At the same time, for those who visit Japan often like me,
you can just enjoy free time at each stop.
It was a fantastic Kyoto 1-day bus tour that allowed us to enjoy a comfortable yet deep itinerary,

You will spend about 70 minutes at Fushimi Inari Shrine, about 2 hours and 40 minutes at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, about 40 minutes at Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), and about 1 hour and 20 minutes at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It is a day trip covering a total of 4 attractions in one day.
Attraction admission fees are not included in the tour price. The admission fee for Ginkaku-ji is 1,000 yen for adults, and for Kiyomizu-dera it is 500 yen for adults, which must be paid individually on-site.
In Arashiyama, you will have about 2 hours and 40 minutes of free time, which includes time for lunch. The guide will provide information on good restaurants and can even help with making phone reservations, making it easy for you to enjoy your meal.
Early in the morning, you will meet the guide holding a travel agency flag in Dotonbori, check the roster, and then board the bus. The tour price includes the rental of an audio receiver, allowing you to comfortably listen to the guide's explanations while sightseeing.
