Whenever that feeling hits, there's one dish that always comes to mind for me:
a bubbling, hearty pot of Budae Jjigae! That's why today, I'm bringing you my review of Kwangsu Saenggak in Chuncheon ◡̈

This place is right near my home, and I've passed it countless times, always wondering about it. Finally, I got to visit!

Looking at the menu on the wall, it's clear Kwangsu Saenggak is a true Chuncheon Budae Jjigae specialist. Beyond their signature Budae Jjigae, they also offer a comforting Gondre-bap (seasoned thistle rice) and Cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste stew) set, plus a classic Pork Cutlet that everyone loves. They really focus on a few, excellent dishes!
Rather than places with an overwhelming number of mediocre options, restaurants where the owner concentrates on a few confident, core dishes are usually the real deal, don't you agree? 😎
We decided to save the Gondre-bap for another time and ordered the Budae Jjigae and Pork Cutlet!

After placing our order, a spread of neatly arranged side dishes quickly appeared on our table 💫. We had quail egg jangjorim (soy-braised eggs), surprisingly addictive kongjaban (soy-glazed black beans), danmuji (pickled radish), and perfectly steamed broccoli with gochujang sauce. It was a classic Korean banchan setup!

While not an extravagant array, these were all the essential, frequently picked-at dishes. It felt just like enjoying a warm, home-cooked meal, lovingly prepared by my mom 🥰

Just look at this generous spread of ham and ingredients piled high in the large hot pot! ㅠㅠ They truly don't hold back, with various types of ham and plump, satisfyingly chewy sausages. Plus, a generous dollop of baked beans adds a creamy richness to the broth. I personally adore baked beans in my Budae Jjigae 😜
Once the gas burner is lit and the broth comes to a rolling boil, and those chewy noodles have soaked up that rich, spicy goodness, take a big mouthful and...!! 🤤

It's a flavor that instantly makes you understand why this is a hidden gem for Budae Jjigae in Chuncheon. The broth is spicy yet clean, with no heavy aftertaste, so you'll find yourself finishing a bowl of rice in no time!

You might be wondering, "Pork cutlet? At a Budae Jjigae place in Chuncheon?" But at Kwangsu Saenggak, this classic pork cutlet is an absolute must-order, a secret weapon! ••• 👍
A thick, sizable pork cutlet comes generously smothered in a sweet and savory brown sauce with a rich, deep flavor. It has that nostalgic look and taste of a classic Korean-style pork cutlet, just like the ones we used to get at those Western-style restaurants with our parents when we were kids! ‼️
(It was so unexpectedly delicious that I devoured it without thinking, hence only one photo...ㅎㅎ)

In addition to Budae Jjigae, which is the main dish, Kwangsu Saenggak also offers Gondre-bap and Cheonggukjang set, as well as Old-fashioned Donkatsu. The Old-fashioned Donkatsu, in particular, is recommended as a great complement to Budae Jjigae.
Kwangsu Saenggak's Budae Jjigae is generously filled with various types of ham and chewy sausages. Additionally, plenty of baked beans are added to make the broth deep and smooth.
