Every time I visit Osaka, there's one dish I absolutely have to indulge in: kushikatsu. These perfectly fried skewers, featuring a delightful array of ingredients, offer a fun and customizable dining experience.
Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Kushiniwa, a fantastic kushikatsu restaurant worth visiting in Osaka's Dotonbori area.

📍 Kushiniwa is a specialty kushikatsu restaurant located near the entrance of Osaka's Kuromon Market. It's also just a short walk from Dotonbori, making it a convenient stop during your travels.
However, it's situated on the second floor of the Torikizoku building, so it can be a bit tricky to spot from the street. We stumbled upon it while searching for highly-rated kushikatsu spots on a map, and its excellent reviews convinced us to give it a try!
While the entrance had a charming, traditional Japanese feel, the interior was surprisingly modern. It’s a cozy spot with about five counter seats and half a dozen four-person tables. The warm color palette throughout the restaurant creates a very comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
The restaurant primarily features Japanese menus, but thanks to modern translation apps like Papago, navigating the options is a breeze, especially with printed text. Kushikatsu prices typically range from 100 to 400 yen per skewer, with nearly 30 varieties available. Generally, vegetable skewers are a bit cheaper, while meat and seafood options are priced higher.
A major highlight here is the 'Choinomi Set'. This fantastic value deal includes three kushikatsu skewers (priced between 100-150 yen each) and one alcoholic drink at an incredibly affordable price.
Regardless of your group size, I highly recommend starting with this budget-friendly set for your first order!
We started our meal by ordering two Choinomi Sets. Our initial plan was to just have a quick bite, and if the fried skewers weren't up to par, we'd simply move on.
However, the visual appeal of the skewers was much better than we expected. They looked incredibly crispy and appetizing even before the first bite.
We ordered chicken thigh, pork, eggplant, lotus root, ginger, and garlic, and every single one was delicious. The exteriors were perfectly crispy, the ingredients inside maintained their texture, and the slight oiliness paired wonderfully with our drinks.
Our plan for a quick snack quickly changed, and we ended up ordering five more varieties of skewers! Another thing we really appreciated was the reasonable price of the asparagus, at just 180 yen. Many restaurants charge 200 yen or more, so we felt this was excellent value.
Whenever I travel to Japan, kushikatsu is a must-eat, and Kushiniwa truly stands out as one of the best restaurants I've tried.
What's more, most of the skewers are priced around 100 yen, offering incredible value for such high quality.
The Choinomi Set is particularly ideal for a light second round of drinks or a quick, satisfying bite.
If you're planning an Osaka trip and find yourself craving kushikatsu near Dotonbori or Kuromon Market, I wholeheartedly recommend Kushiniwa.
Despite its seemingly local vibe, it's quite popular with international visitors, including many Koreans, so you can visit without any hesitation!

Kushiniwa operates from 4 PM to 11 PM, Monday through Friday. On weekends, Saturday and Sunday, it's open from 12 PM to 2 PM, and then again from 4 PM to 11 PM.
Kushiniwa is located near the entrance of Kuromon Market in Osaka city, not far from Dotonbori. It's on the 2nd floor of the Torikizoku building, so it might not be easy to spot just by walking by. It's recommended to use a map to find your way.
At Kushiniwa, you can enjoy about 30 different types of kushikatsu, with prices ranging from ~$1 to ~$2. Vegetable skewers are relatively inexpensive, while meat and seafood options tend to be higher in price.
The 'Choinomi Set' consists of three kushikatsu skewers priced between ~$1 and ~$1, along with one alcoholic drink. It's a recommended first order as it allows you to enjoy kushikatsu at an affordable price.
