Osaka Kushikatsu Daruma Shinsekai Original Main Shop

Hey there, fellow travelers!
I'm NaBongSoon, your go-to travel creator.
My husband and I recently took a trip to Osaka, Japan—
the absolute ultimate destination for foodies.
When you're in Osaka, one of the absolute must-eat local specialties
is "Kushikatsu"—deep-fried, golden, crispy skewers!
And we made our way to the birthplace of this iconic dish,
the legendary 'Kushikatsu Daruma Shinsekai Original Main Shop.'
This is one of the most famous eateries in Japan,
and it's located right in the middle of Shinsekai—
a neighborhood bursting with retro vibes and lively energy.
After wandering around and taking in all the unique sights,
we finally sat down to eat.
Let me tell you, pairing those freshly fried, piping-hot skewers
with an ice-cold draft beer completely washed all our travel fatigue away!

Shinsekai has recently become one of Osaka's hottest must-visit spots.
So, here is my honest, fully self-funded review of Kushikatsu Daruma's Main Shop,
covering everything from its location and vibe
to the menu items and, of course, the taste!
1. Location and Vibe

You might be more familiar with the Dotonbori location.
Since the branch on Dotonbori's main street is so massive and famous,
lots of travelers assume it's the main headquarters.
However, the actual original main shop is located right here in Shinsekai,
the charmingly retro district built around the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower.
The original main shop has a cozy, nostalgic old-school vibe.
It's instantly recognizable by its bold yellow sign,
the red striped awning underneath,
and the traditional purple noren curtains hanging at the entrance.
And look up at the second-floor window! You'll see
the grumpy-looking mascot doll of the owner.
This is "Daruma Daijin," modeled after Katsuya Ueyama,
the 4th-generation owner who famously saved the shop
from the brink of permanent closure.

Why is he scowling so hard, you ask?
It's a fierce warning to enforce the shop's absolute golden rule
designed to keep things perfectly hygienic:
"NO DOUBLE DIPPING!"
These days, most places use squeeze bottles for sauce,
so I thought the nostalgic shared-sauce experience was gone.
But I was so happy to find that they offer the classic experience—
with raw cabbage and the old-school dipping sauce bowl available on the menu for ~$2 (~$2 including tax).

Since kushikatsu was born all the way back in 1929,
you are literally stepping into a holy land of flavor
with nearly a century of culinary tradition!

We took a leisurely 20-minute stroll from our hotel
near Namba Station to get here.

We visited around 5 PM on a weekday,
and luckily scored a seat right away without any wait!
The inside is cozy, featuring counter seating around an open kitchen
that accommodates about 12 people.
Since it's a wildly popular Osaka spot,
a massive line had already formed
the moment we finished our quick bite and stepped out.
2. A Wide Variety of Menu Options

As soon as you walk into this ultimate foodie hotspot in Japan,
the Shinsekai Main Store,
the staff will ask where you're from and hand over the perfect menu for you.

They have menus in Korean, Japanese, and English ready to go.

Since the Osaka Kushikatsu menu is incredibly extensive
and the options and prices can vary by season,
I highly recommend checking out their official website through the Google Map link above.
There, you'll find beautifully organized menu images with photos and pricing,
which can be even clearer than the printed translated menus
available in the shop!
Value-for-Money Set Menus
NO. 1
Kushikatsu 15-piece Set + Doteyaki
2,540 yen (2,783 yen)
NO. 2
Kushikatsu 12-piece Set + Doteyaki
2,050 yen (2,255 yen)
NO. 3
Kushikatsu 9-piece Set + Doteyaki
1,630 yen (1,793 yen)

While they have these great budget-friendly combo sets,
we had actually already eaten dinner before coming here.
Not having the room to feast on a massive set, my husband and I
decided to order individual skewers of whatever we fancied.
With so many options like Wagyu beef and seafood skewers,
it was incredibly fun to mix and match
our own custom plate.

Prices for draft beer (Namabiru) by size:
Large: 880 yen (976 yen) / Medium: 560 yen (616 yen) / Small: 460 yen (506 yen)
They also offer a fantastic selection of other drinks,
including non-alcoholic beer, highballs, chu-hi, shochu, plum wine, sake,
and soft drinks.
Please note that guests middle school-aged and older
are required to order at least one drink per person.

We kept it simple with two skewers each of lotus root, camembert cheese,
and chicken skin, plus a side of doteyaki,
a glass of plum wine, and a medium draft beer.
Our total came to 2,629 yen including tax.
They say the real goal of an Osaka trip is to eat until you drop,
so even though we were already full when we arrived,
we couldn't resist dropping by. We only ordered what we absolutely wanted,
but keep in mind that this place's absolute signature
is their incredibly juicy beef kushikatsu,
which has a delightful gyukatsu-like texture. Make sure to try it!
3. The Taste of Osaka's Must-Try Kushikatsu

First, let me introduce their incredibly popular side dish,
doteyaki!

Doteyaki is a beloved local specialty of Osaka made by simmering
beef sinew (suji) and konjac in a savory-sweet, rich
miso-based broth.
The chewy, melt-in-your-mouth texture
combined with an explosion of umami flavor
makes it the perfect pairing for a cold drink.

I also absolutely loved the plum wine (umeshu) here.
The staff was so attentive, asking whether I wanted it
on the rocks or with soda water.
It wasn't overly sweet—absolutely hit the spot for me!

When you visit a famous Kushikatsu spot in Osaka,
you might find that it's a bit of an acquired taste for some.
The first couple of skewers taste incredibly crispy and delicious,
but if you aren't a big fan of fried foods,
the richness can catch up to you,
and you might feel a bit overwhelmed by the oil pretty quickly.
Of course, as someone who loves all kinds of food,
grabbing a few pieces to pair with a cold drink was absolutely perfect for me!

Instead of planning a full meal here for your very first try,
I'd recommend ordering a few single skewers of your favorite ingredients first.
If it hits the spot, you can always go all-in
with a set menu on your next visit!

Personally, the texture of the fried lotus root was absolutely fantastic!
The salty, crispy chicken skin skewer and the
gooey Camembert cheese skewer delivered exactly the deliciousness you’d expect.
Thanks to the ultra-fine breadcrumbs,
they nailed that perfect balance of a crispy yet airy crunch,
creating a wonderfully savory flavor profile that I absolutely loved.

Since they’re particularly famous for their signature sauce,
the perfect blend of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce
really brought out the natural flavors of each fried skewer beautifully.
4. Wrapping Up Our Osaka Foodie Adventure

And that wraps up my visit to Kushikatsu Daruma Shinsekai Main Store—
a legendary Osaka spot boasting nearly 100 years of rich history!

Though the shop itself is quite cozy,
soaking in the unique vibe that only the original birthplace of Kushikatsu can offer was incredibly special.
Between the thin, savory batter and the deep, rich flavors,
it was a truly unique culinary experience.

Since Shinsekai has recently emerged as one of the trendiest must-visit spots in Osaka,
there’s so much to see and eat beyond just Kushikatsu.
I highly recommend heading over in the evening to beat the summer heat,
catch the stunning night lights of the tower,
and soak in the charmingly retro street vibes!
