Planning your dream trip to Kota Kinabalu?
Don't forget one essential: a local SIM card!
Ideally, you'd buy your SIM card before your trip and have it delivered, but sometimes life gets in the way. This time, I found myself scrambling the day before my flight, completely forgetting about it!
I started looking for airport pick-up options, checking a few different sites. But here's the catch: if you're flying AirAsia to Kota Kinabalu, you often arrive at Incheon Airport late at night, making SIM card collection impossible (most counters close by 9 or 10 PM).
Ugh, I thought, I'll just buy one when I get there. After a bit more digging, I discovered TuneTalk, a SIM provider available right at Kota Kinabalu International Airport!
You can purchase a SIM card for 30 Malaysian Ringgit or approximately ~$7 USD.
(Cash payment only, cards not accepted).
No need to worry if you arrive late at night or early in the morning; they're open almost 24/7 (Operating hours: 00:00 - 23:59).
So, I figured I'd just get a TuneTalk SIM locally. But then, I stumbled upon the KKday website, where you can pre-purchase a TuneTalk local SIM!
And it was even cheaper! You can find the KKday link to purchase your Malaysia SIM card below!
(Airport pick-up available in various Malaysian cities).

SIM card purchases are available for all cities in Malaysia.
Enjoy fast internet with a 5G prepaid SIM.
Seamless high-speed data.
Pick-up available at:
Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Kota Kinabalu International Airport

You can purchase for airport pick-up even the day before!
Simply select your arrival date at Kota Kinabalu Airport, then choose your desired option and pick-up location.

Traveler Lite - 15 days, 15GB
Traveler Fast - 30 days, 35GB
Traveler Unlimited - 30 days, Unlimited

Choose the plan that best fits your travel dates and data needs!
Typically, other Malaysia SIM cards offering 3-4 days with 3-4GB of data cost around ~$5. But the TuneTalk SIM offers 15 days with 15GB for about ~$5! That's a fantastic deal.

Tips for purchasing your Kota Kinabalu SIM card:
Once you arrive at Kota Kinabalu Airport, it's easy to find the TuneTalk booth (it's a distinctive red booth).
Just show your SIM voucher, and the staff will happily swap out your SIM card for you – super convenient!

For my 3-night, 4-day trip to Kota Kinabalu, I opted for the smallest plan: the 15-day, 15GB Traveler Lite SIM!

After booking, you'll receive a confirmation notification (e.g., via KakaoTalk if you're in Korea). Click 'View Voucher' to see your QR code.
Make sure to screenshot it! Simply show this QR code to the TuneTalk staff, and they'll handle the SIM card exchange.

Upon arriving at Kota Kinabalu Airport, after clearing immigration, exit and walk straight to your left. You'll pass other SIM providers and an Orange convenience store, and then you'll spot TuneTalk.
It was easy to find because there were many people gathered around the TuneTalk booth.
As you get closer to TuneTalk, you'll hear staff members speaking fluent English (or even Korean if you're lucky!), saying things like, "SIM here, fast internet!" – you can't miss it!

Indeed, buying a SIM locally would cost you 30 Malaysian Ringgit / $7 USD / or ~$7 USD.
I highly recommend purchasing your SIM through KKday beforehand to save money!
Show your QR code, and they'll swap your SIM immediately. They even tape your old SIM to the new SIM's packaging, so you don't have to worry about losing it.
However, they don't automatically provide a SIM ejector tool, so be sure to ask for one after they change your SIM!
I asked for a SIM ejector tool, and they provided it (definitely ask!).
The internet felt a bit slow at first in the airport, but it worked perfectly fine once I left the airport area.
It was slightly slower on the islands but still perfectly usable!
If you're looking for a Malaysia SIM card or debating your options for your Kota Kinabalu trip, I strongly recommend booking through KKday for an affordable and convenient local SIM experience!
If you purchase it directly at the airport, it costs 30 MYR or ~$7, payable in cash, and the booth operates from 00:00 to 23:59. Pre-purchasing through KKday allows you to buy a 15-day, 15GB plan for a lower price, around ~$5, and you can conveniently pick it up using a QR code voucher.
SIM card pickup at Incheon Airport might be difficult as it closes around 9-10 PM. However, the Tune Talk SIM booth at Kota Kinabalu Airport operates from 00:00 to 23:59, even for late-night arrivals, so you can purchase it directly there or pick it up at the airport after pre-booking through KKday.
After clearing immigration at Kota Kinabalu Airport, walk to your left. You'll pass other SIM providers and an Orange convenience store, and then you'll see the red Tune Talk booth. The staff will replace your SIM card for you, but they don't provide a SIM ejector tool separately, so you should ask for one after the replacement if you need it.
KKday offers Traveler Lite, Traveler Fast, and Traveler Unlimited products. The Traveler Lite plan provides 15GB of data for 15 days and can be purchased for around ~$5.
