When traveling in Japan, exploring just one city feels like a missed opportunity.
That is why I always make sure to venture out into the beautiful neighboring towns.
However, Japan's public transportation costs are notoriously high.
Fortunately, transit passes are here to save the day!
For my trip, I planned a lovely day out from Osaka to Nara and the scenic Mt. Ikoma.
To keep things budget-friendly, I hunted down the ultimate regional pass.
What is the Kintetsu Rail Pass?
The absolute best way to cut down transit costs on this route
is by using the Kintetsu Rail Pass.
You can choose between 1-Day, 2-Day, 5-Day, and 5-Day Plus options.
The 1-Day and 2-Day passes cover the Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara regions,
while the 5-Day passes extend all the way to Mie, Ise-Shima, and Nagoya.
If you are only visiting Osaka's immediate neighbors like Nara or Kyoto,
the 1-Day Pass is more than enough to cover your travels.
Not only does this pass cover the Kintetsu local trains,
but it also includes local bus routes within Nara!

If I had paid for each segment individually, it would have cost 2,530 JPY.
But since I bought the pass online for around $10,
I saved about $6 per person!
Since there were two of us, we saved a total of $12!

Even though it is the exact same pass, each booking platform
offers different card discounts and coupons.
I highly recommend checking both before buying!
How to Use the Digital Pass
Regardless of the platform you choose,
you will receive a digital voucher via email or messaging app after booking.
Once you open the voucher link,
tap the button highlighted in the red box on the top right.
⚠️ WARNING: Read This First!
I made a mistake here because I didn't read the warning label.
I thought I was just checking the ticket details to exchange it for a paper pass,
but tapping it instantly activated the pass for that day!
I ended up having to purchase two brand-new passes for our actual travel day,
so please make sure you don't tap it until you are actually at the station! 😭
Once you activate the Kintetsu Free Pass, a QR code will appear.
The QR code refreshes every 5 minutes and screenshots won't work,
so make sure you have a live internet connection.
When boarding the bus, simply show the screen to the driver.
At train stations, scan the QR code at the automated ticket gates.
If a station doesn't have an automated QR scanner, just present it to the station staff.
First Stop: Nara Park
First up on our Kintetsu Rail Pass adventure was Nara Park.
While it is world-famous for its free-roaming deer,
the park itself is massive and offers breathtaking scenery
around every single corner.
Strolling through the park,
you will also spot the majestic Kofuku-ji Five-Story Pagoda.
Of course, we had to visit the famous deer.
When I first saw them 10 years ago, they were surprisingly feisty,
and I can confirm they haven't changed a bit! 😂
Next Stop: Mt. Ikoma Cable Car
After exploring Nara,
we took the Kintetsu line from Kintetsu-Nara Station to Ikoma Station.
This route features a super cute, whimsical cable car
that takes you up to a peaceful, historic Japanese temple.
We got off at Hozanji Station
and walked up the stone-paved approach toward Hozan-ji Temple.
The path is lined with charming little shops and retro cafes.
It has a completely different, slow-paced vibe compared to
the bustling streets of Osaka or Kyoto. Highly recommended for slow travelers!
The view looking down from Hozan-ji is absolutely picture-perfect.
It made me want to spend a full night in Nara Prefecture next time.
Because we spent so much time admiring the streets,
we didn't quite make it all the way up to Ikomasanjo Amusement Park.
If you are traveling with kids,
the cable car ride up to the park is fully covered by the pass,
so make sure to head all the way to the top!

Pressing the confirmation button on the voucher will immediately activate it, so you must press it right before boarding. The generated QR code is valid for 5 minutes and cannot be used as a screenshot.
