Quick answer
Flights from Khiva to Tashkent depart from Urgench Airport (UGC).
Uzbekistan Airways flight HY52 from Urgench to Tashkent includes an intermediate stop in Bukhara.
On my flight, passengers going on to Tashkent stayed on board in Bukhara, but this can differ by flight, so check with the crew.
Always check your flight details for intermediate stops and total travel time when booking.
Confirm with a flight attendant if you should disembark during a stop.

The plane landed, and people started disembarking. I thought, "Great, we've arrived in Tashkent!"
I was ready to grab my bag and head out, but then I realized... this wasn't Tashkent. It was Bukhara!
How did a flight to Tashkent end up in Bukhara? After my time in Khiva, my Uzbekistan Airways flight HY52 took an unexpected turn.
01 The Day We Flew From Khiva to Tashkent
To Urgench Airport

I checked out of my guesthouse in Khiva and headed to Urgench Airport.
While I was traveling from Khiva, the actual departure point for the flight was Urgench. It's crucial to remember that Urgench and Khiva are distinct cities, so when booking your flight, make sure to search for 'Urgench' as your departure city.

Urgench Airport operates as an international airport, though most flights are domestic routes to Tashkent or international connections to Moscow, Russia.

Given the limited number of flights, the airport isn't particularly large. The small lobby can get quite bustling with travelers waiting for their departures.

Once you check in and pass through security, you'll find an even more compact waiting area. Seating can be competitive, so if you spot an empty chair, grab it quickly!
02 Uzbekistan Airways HY52 Flight Details
Airline & Flight No. | Uzbekistan Airways HY52 |
Route | Urgench → Tashkent |
Departure | 09:20 AM |
Arrival | Approx. 12:15 PM |
Intermediate Stop | Bukhara (approx. 30 minutes) |
Please note that these times reflect my experience when I took the flight. They are not the current flight schedule but rather a record of my travel day.
I boarded the plane solely expecting to arrive in Tashkent, completely unaware that it included a brief stop in Bukhara.

Even at the check-in counter, where 'Bukhara-Tashkent' was clearly displayed, I paid no mind, thinking it was just a routing detail. Little did I know, this seemingly minor detail would lead to a moment of confusion!
03 Tashkent, or so I thought – but it was Bukhara!

After the plane landed, passengers started to get off.
I, too, assumed we had reached our destination and prepared to disembark. But to my surprise, we were in Bukhara! It was just a brief stop before continuing to Tashkent.
Since I hadn't realized there would be an intermediate stop, I started looking around, utterly bewildered.

Should I get off since others are? Do I disembark briefly and then re-board? Or should I just stay put?
I asked a flight attendant, and they instructed me to remain seated if Tashkent was my final destination.
While I followed their advice, it was my first time experiencing a flight layover where I stayed on the same plane, and it felt a bit unsettling, almost like a bus stopping at an intermediate station!

After the original passengers disembarked, new passengers boarded the plane.
It was fascinating to sit in the same aircraft and watch the surrounding passengers change.
The stop in Bukhara felt like about 30 minutes. Afterward, we continued our journey to Tashkent, arriving around 12:15 PM.
So, instead of changing planes, I simply stayed on board, waited, and then continued to Tashkent.
It was a novel experience to see a flight make an intermediate stop where people get off and on again!
I found it quite fascinating!
04 Tips for Booking the Same Route
If you're looking for flights from Urgench to Tashkent, don't just check the departure and arrival times. Pay close attention to any indications of intermediate stops and the total travel time.
This way, you won't be caught off guard like I was when the plane made an unexpected stop!
👉 Compare Urgench → Tashkent flights on KAYAK
Had I known about the stop when booking, I would have understood the situation better when passengers started disembarking.
And when the plane lands for an intermediate stop, don't automatically follow other passengers off the aircraft.

It's always best to clearly state your final destination to a flight attendant and ask if you should disembark or remain on board.
While I stayed on the plane for my flight, you shouldn't assume the same procedure applies to all flights. Always follow the specific instructions for your booked itinerary.

That moment of confusion in Bukhara remains one of the most memorable parts of my journey from Khiva to Tashkent.
Thinking we had arrived, only to discover it wasn't Tashkent yet, was certainly a surprise!

If you're planning a similar route, make sure to check for any layovers on your Urgench departure flight. Don't make the same mistake I did by assuming a landing means you've reached your final destination!
