I've revisited and tidied up my review of Kawakamiya Kasuitei, a place I visited some time ago.
So, there's a good reason I'm bringing this up again! Agoda just released a discount code you can use throughout November. When I plugged it into what I originally paid, the difference was pretty significant! I'll break down my review and show you how to use the coupon.

Let's first clarify the November Agoda discount codes
Coupon Code | Benefit | Eligibility & Conditions |
NEWMOMENT12 | 12% off hotels (max $50) | New Agoda members, apply after login |
MOMENT08AGD | 8% off international hotels (max $30) | All members, apply after login |
- Code entry deadline: until November 30, 2026, 23:59
- Stay period: for stays until June 30, 2027
- The code will only apply if you book through the Agoda link in this post.
So, this means you can book anytime in November, and your stay can be as late as next spring or early summer! Since popular ryokans in Gero Onsen tend to get fully booked months ahead, this condition is actually a real lifesaver.

Here's what the coupon would look like applied to my booking price
When I made my reservation, one night including kaiseki was ~$293.
I calculated it based on this amount.
Option | Discount Amount | Price After Discount |
Without Coupon | - | ~$293 |
MOMENT08AGD (8%) | Approx. ~$23 | Approx. ~$269 |
NEWMOMENT12 (12%) | Approx. ~$35 | Approx. ~$257 |
※ This is a simple calculation based on my previous booking price. The discount amount was lower than the maximum discount limits ($50, $30), so the percentage was applied directly. Remember that actual prices can vary depending on the date, so please make sure to double-check on the payment screen!
If you're a first-time Agoda user, the 12% code is definitely a sweet deal. Saving over ~$30 means you can easily cover some pudding and souvenirs at Gero Onsen!

Ryokan: So Much More Than Just a Place to Sleep!
Before I went, I honestly just thought of ryokans as 'Japanese-style accommodations.'
But once I experienced it, it was completely different! There are hot springs, elaborate Kaiseki courses, and the staff take care of you from start to finish. It felt like experiencing the entirety of traditional Japanese culture all in one place.
I was looking for something beyond just exploring Nagoya city, and it turns out Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot springs, is just over an hour away from Nagoya!
Getting There - Definitely Arrange for Pickup!
You can take a train from Nagoya to Gero Station. From Gero Station to the ryokan, it's about a 17-minute walk.
However, it's quite a long walk when you're lugging a suitcase. I didn't know, so I just walked, but I vowed never to do it again! 😅
You can request a complimentary pickup taxi by emailing the ryokan before check-in. It's free, so there's no reason not to use it!
And one more thing: the ryokan is set back slightly from the main street, so if you're just following Google Maps, it's easy to miss the entrance. You need to go one block further in to find the entrance. Keep that in mind!

The Room - The Epitome of a Tatami-Mat Experience!
I stayed in a Traditional Room (Room 205).
Upon check-in, they carried my luggage to the room and offered rich matcha tea and sweets. It immediately felt different from the start.
When you open the window, you get a panoramic view of the mountains and the river. I just sat there, mesmerized, for a long time.
The room had everything: a bathroom, a powder room, a safe, yukata robes, a tea set, and even a furoshiki bag for the onsen. Absolutely nothing was missing!

And when I returned to my room after dinner, the futon had been laid out! That moment truly made me realize, 'Ah, *this* is what a ryokan experience is all about.' It was absolutely wonderful.

Kaiseki - Make Sure to Book with It Included!
You might be wondering whether to book with Kaiseki included or not. I'd strongly recommend booking it with Kaiseki included.
A beautiful, meticulously prepared course was served one dish after another, and the quality was far better than I expected. The ryokan experience truly felt complete with this.

The Onsen - My Skin Felt Different the Moment I Stepped Out!
Gero Onsen is counted among Japan's top three hot springs, along with Kusatsu and Arima. It's famous for being excellent for your skin, even earning the nickname 'Bath of Beauties.'
The moment I got in and then out, I immediately felt my skin become incredibly smooth! 😄
Operating hours are 24 hours for the indoor baths and until 11 PM for the outdoor baths. Even though I went in winter, the outdoor bath water temperature was perfect, so it wasn't cold at all.
And this was the best part: there weren't many people, so I could enjoy it almost as if I had the entire place to myself, in perfect tranquility.

Tips for Booking
When I compared, Agoda often had the best prices. And if you add their November coupons, the difference seems to widen even more.
Popular ryokans at Gero Onsen often get fully booked several months in advance. If you've already bought your flight tickets, make sure to secure your accommodation first. Just a heads-up!
