Planning your Osaka trip? Discover the simplest way to get your ICOCA card at Kansai Airport and navigate Osaka's public transport effortlessly. Avoid fees & travel smart!

Osaka offers a variety of transportation passes, like the Osaka Amazing Pass or Metro Pass, but sometimes these aren't the most convenient for every traveler.
If your itinerary involves more than just subway rides or includes traveling on JR lines, a rechargeable IC card like ICOCA (or Suica) is often a much smoother option.
In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how and where to purchase your ICOCA card right at Kansai International Airport (KIX), ensuring a hassle-free start to your Osaka adventure in 2026!
Where to Get Your ICOCA Card at Kansai Airport

Once you've cleared customs at Kansai Airport's International Terminal 1, head up to the 2nd floor. You'll find a connecting passage that leads directly to both the Nankai Line and JR Line train stations.

As you walk through, you'll see the ticket sales counters and boarding gates for both Nankai and JR trains.

Look for the blue JR Tickets sign on your right. You can purchase your ICOCA card from the blue vending machines located there.
❗️ Important tip: These machines only accept cash, so make sure you have some Japanese Yen on hand!
How to Purchase Your ICOCA Card

The vending machines are user-friendly and support multiple languages, including English. Simply select English to follow the prompts easily.

After choosing your language, select the option to purchase an ICOCA card.

ICOCA cards can be purchased in increments of 1,000 yen (approximately ~$6).
Keep in mind that your initial purchase includes a ~$3 (500 yen) deposit. So, if you load ~$6 (1,000 yen) onto the card, you'll have ~$3 (500 yen) in actual usable balance. This deposit is fully refundable when you return the card.
❗️ Refund Tip: If you have more than ~$1 (220 yen) remaining on your card when you go to refund it, a ~$1 (220 yen) handling fee will be deducted. To avoid this fee, we highly recommend spending down your balance completely. ICOCA cards can be used at most convenience stores, so it's easy to use up any small remaining amount!
For a 3-night, 4-day trip, I initially loaded ~$12 (2,000 yen) and then added another ~$6 (1,000 yen) on day 3. A total of ~$19 (3,000 yen) was perfect for visiting Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and making a day trip to Kyoto!

Once you've selected your desired top-up amount, insert your cash into the machine.

And just like that, you'll have your ICOCA card ready to go, directly from Kansai Airport!
You can use your ICOCA card immediately to take a train into the city. While you can also purchase ICOCA cards at JR Offices in major city stations like Osaka Station and Kyoto Station, it's often more convenient to get it right at Kansai Airport upon arrival. It saves you time and hassle later!
We hope these tips help you have an amazing and seamless Osaka trip!

You can purchase an ICOCA card at Kansai Airport International Terminal, on the 2nd floor, past the connecting passage between Nankai Line and JR Line, next to the JR train boarding gates, at the blue 'JR Tickets' vending machine. ICOCA cards can only be issued with cash, so please prepare cash.
ICOCA cards can only be purchased in increments of ~$6. This amount includes a ~$3 deposit. Therefore, the actual usable amount is the top-up amount minus ~$3.
When returning an ICOCA card, you can get the ~$3 deposit back. However, if there is a balance of ~$1 or more remaining on the card, a ~$1 fee will be deducted from the refund. Therefore, it is recommended to use up all the remaining balance at convenience stores, etc., before returning the card.
